As I am not a member of History and Heritage Branch-Air Force, all Air Force history or heritage queries should be directed, in the first instance, to [email protected] n this day, the Australian Air Corps (AAC) – O a temporary Army unit raised 15 months earlier – was disbanded and replaced by the Australian Air Force (AAF) as a separate service. Although the Australian Flying Corps (AFC) was disbanded after WW I ended in 1918, Australia was committed to retaining a military air service. Britain had gifted 128 surplus aircraft to Australia to establish an air force, and some of these planes - along with training machines already at Point Cook - were operated by an interim army unit, the Australian Air Corps, during 1920-21. The AAF immediately took possession of existing aircraft and equipment at Point Cook, Victoria, but not all the AAC’s personnel were transferred across. At its formation the new Service had 21 officers and 128 other ranks, and even six months later this strength had barely doubled. The 153 aircraft which initially came into the AAF’s possession were mainly war surplus machines received under an ‘Imperial Gift’ arrangement. -
Aerodynamic Optimization of a Biplane Configuration Using Differential Evolution
Computer Aided Optimum Design in Engineering X 209 Aerodynamic optimization of a biplane configuration using differential evolution R. W. Derksen & A. G. Kraj Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Abstract This paper presents our work on designing a biplane configuration that has a minimum drag to lift ratio. This problem is a mixed optimization problem in that both discrete and continuous variables are used. Fourteen parameters were used to fully describe the biplane configuration and calculate performance. Performance calculations were based on Munk’s general biplane theory. Each wing required six parameters; airfoil profile type, span, tip and root chord lengths, angle of attack, and sweep angle. Two parameters were used to define the horizontal stagger and vertical gap between the two planes. The airfoil profile types were stored in an indexed database which allowed us to obtain the section’s aerodynamic characteristics. Our analysis showed that differential evolution found the optimum solution quickly. The characteristics of the resultant optimum solution will be discussed in detail, along with our observations of how the process needs to be adjusted for optimum performance. Keywords: aerodynamic design, optimization, biplanes, aerodynamic configuration. 1 Introduction The following sections will provide a brief review of the state-of-the-art of aerodynamic optimization. This will be followed by a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of the biplane configuration. Full details of additional Air-Britain books and more detailed descriptions are shown online AUSTER – the Company and the Aircraft Tom Wenham, Rod Simpson & Malcolm Fillmore NEW Auster Aircraft has a long and distinguished history, starting with its formation as British Taylorcraft in 1938 and end - ing with its absorption into Beagle Aircraft in 1960.The Auster was not, strictly, a new design since it had its origins in the American Taylorcraft two seater. However, World War II gave it a welcome momentum which led to more than 1,600 artillery spotter Austers being built for the British and other air forces. The Rearsby factory was at maximum production during the war - but, as with all other aircraft manufacturing plants, it found a sudden collapse in military orders when peace came. However, there were returning flyers keen to keep their skills alive and the Autocrat and its successors were successful, not only in the UK but also across the world. Using the same basic airframe, the Auster constantly changed its shape and the 180hp Husky of 1960 was a very different animal from the original 55hp Taylorcraft Model C. Austers were sold all over the world and were used for many tasks including crop spraying, aerial advertising and joyriding. The company also developed new models including the very successful AOP.9, and the less successful Agricola, Atlantic and Avis. -

Providing for the Royal Australian Air Force in the Defence of Australia 1934-1944 Meeting the political and economic challenges in strengthening Australia’s defences Myriam Sarah Geneviève Amar A thesis submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy University of New England, 12 March 2015 1 ABSTRACT This thesis examines Australia’s defence preparedness when Japan threatened its northern shores in 1941-1942. Although according to historian Andrew T. Ross the local industries were producing quantities of ammunition and military equipment at this time, my thesis asks why, when on 19 February 1942 the Japanese launched their air raids on Darwin, defenders were unable to counter the enemy due to a severe lack of machine-gun fire and rifles. In this I draw attention to the massive deficiencies in transport systems, the tyranny of distance and bumpy roads which made delivery of bulk stores to the northern forces a challenge. A positive aspect of this was the emerging need to deploy and sustain forces in northern Australia, which led to a decision to upgrade overland links and infrastructure. While taking a broad view of influences and events relevant to policy development and implementation on Australia’s armed services, my thesis focuses closely on the formation, development and role of the RAAF. I also draw upon the difficulties the Air Board experienced in obtaining suitable aircraft for the RAAF at a time when the British Air Ministry was dealing with its own modernisation problems. Australia’s cooperation with Britain on Imperial defence policy promoted a false sense of security based on the assumption that Britain would remain the dominant power. -

CANADA AVIATION AND SPACE MUSEUM AIRCRAFT CANADAIR CL-13B / F-86 SABRE MK 6 RCAF GOLDEN HAWKS SERIAL 23651 Introduction In August 1949, Canadair Limited, located at the Cartierville Airport facilities near Montreal, and the Department of National Defence (DND) signed a contract for the manufacture under license of 100 of the most advanced swept-wing day fighter aircraft of the time, the North American Aviation (NAA) F-86 Sabre. Assigned the Canadair model number CL-13, this order led to the largest aircraft production run in Canadair’s history. From 1949 to October 1958, Canadair Limited went on to produce some 1,815 examples of the famed fighter, in models ranging from the Sabre Mark (Mk) 1 up to the ultimate Sabre Mk 6 series, with a few special experimental models emanating from the production batches. The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) was the prime customer for the majority of these aircraft, but the power and reputation of the Canadian-built examples had other nations sit up and take notice, eventually culminating in numerous orders to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and non-NATO countries. Canadair delivered versions of the CL-13 Sabre to the United States, Britain, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Yugoslavia, Germany, Columbia, and South Africa. RCAF variants served domestically training pilots and crews, and performed an important role in the Canadian commitment to provide a European air contingent for NATO operations. Some of the Canadian-based RCAF units wished to proudly show off their shiny new jet mounts to the general public, seeing as they were paying for them in one way or another, and permission was eventually granted for limited public expositions.
