I have read all the previous Young Avengers and Runaways prior to reading this, and I love birth sets of kids. They're fun innovative and genuinely really like each other. Character wise I prefer the Young Avengers, but we don't get many of them here in this tie-in. This centers much more around the Runaways and their continuing problems with being hero's but not being snapped up in the Registration nonsense. The action revolves mainly around Young Avenger half Skrull half Teddy who it supposedly the saviour of the Skrull race, and Xavin a teenage Skrull who's lived with and fallen in love with Karolina one of the Runaways. I liked the art, though I know some think it's too bright and too much fun for all the seriousness of the Secret Invasion. I found it nice and refreshing that kids actually looked like kids since only one of them is 18 and Molly is actually only 11. Parts of this might not make sense to all readers though if you haven't read previous books for these characters. There isn't a lot of backstory to catch you up if you don't already know the characters. I wouldn't say this is essential reading for the Secret Invasion storyline, but to me it really did enhance a lot of stuff going on there. Since I absolutely adore the Young Avengers, and really like the Runaways I give this 4 stars. I've been working my way through Secret Invasion after having finished Avengers Disassembled , House of M , and Civil War . Despite having the seeds of invasion planted as far back as House of M, I've found this event to be the weakest and least compelling. Nearly all of the tie-ins are very short, with little actual impact. This tie-in is brief but action-packed. I've never read the Runaways except via the tie-ins to previous events. However, after reading this I did order the upcoming Runaways: The Complete Collection Vol 1 as I'm now interested in learning more of their story. I purchased this book for the Young Avengers. Both teams have ties to the Skrulls: Hulking is half Skrull, half Kree and Xavin is a full-blooded Skrull. When they find themselves in the midst of the battle in Times Square, both kids are targeted for death by the invaders. While the story was simple, at least it tied directly into the event. However, I didn't care for the art at all. The artist drew both teams' members as 10 year olds! This is especially troubling for the older teens like Wiccan and Hulking who are dating, or Xavin and Karolina who are engaged to be married! The art actually pulled me out of the story more than once. Overall, there is nothing essential here that expands on the crossover event, but it wasn't a bad read. Recommended if you really love the teams. Secret Invasion: Runaways Young Avengers Paperback – 11 March 2009.
