A Message from Anne KaneKane,, Principal

Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members,

As we enter our 4 th quarter of the school year, we want to celebrate both school and student outcomes. Recent data placed Kaua`i High at 16 th out of 55 DOE public High Schools according to Honolulu Magazine multi-criteria ranking based upon publicly available data. While there is still room for improvement, we are proud of what our students have accomplished academically. In addition we would like to highlight recent accomplishments outside of the traditional classroom data realm. Did you know that at Kaua`i High all these noteworthy events have happened in the 3 rd quarter: o YMCA Youth of the Year (Kaua`i Island) is a KHS sophomore who competes March 30 for state level recognition o CTE Health Academy pathway- Nineteen students competed at the HOSA state competition (Health Occupations students of America). Five won at the State competition and are headed to the HOSA International Convention in Florida in June 2017 o CTE Arts and Communication Academy pathway -Olelo x-Change competition- KHS had 71 media entries and 5 of them are finalists, winners announced in April. -Student Reporting Lab from PBS Newshour- one Kaua`i High student is among 20 students from the entire US honored-Hiki No PBS Program; KHS received First place for Best Writing High School Division and Third place for Best Franchise Piece-Kid Witness News’ a national program and KHS one student entry is in the top 10 entries and we will find out in April -Teacher Leah Aiwohi; chosen as a PBS 2017 Digital Innovator, to represent the state of Hawai`i at national summit o Art Department- Students enter many competitions and recently one KHS student’s oil painting became a finalist in the Shriners competition- we will know outcome in April o Science Department- Students competed at the district level and took 3 rd , 4 th and 5 th place in the high school division o English Department-Students entered a Creative Writing Competition run by “Honolulu Havoc” and one grade 10 student won first place in the short story category o Its Academic Hawai`i Team- has been very competitive and will be shown on KFIV TV on 4/2/17 @ 7pm (a rebroadcast on 4/8/17 @ 6:30 in case you miss the first one) o Mock Trial Teams – We were able to field two teams this year as interest in this activity grows o Peace Poetry contest - two students have ‘placed’ and will find out who got 1 st place on April 17; Part of the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Poetry Event celebration

There are many more events that students participate in, watch our Facebook. Please thank the teachers who encourage students to compete outside of the traditional school atmosphere; all part of a well-rounded High School experience which Engages and Empowers all to be successful. As we enter 4 th quarter and head to the summer. Please encourage your student to read, that is one area that students must practice outside of school. During our weekly homeroom time we are encouraging students to read a book of choice or a book we have supplied. However more “outside of school” reading time is needed and as school/ parent/guardian “team” that is our message. We will be offering Summer Credit Recovery. This (CR) will happen from June 13- July 13 in two sessions both morning and afternoon. Credit Recovery is also available every day after school for two hours for FREE!!! Encourage your student to start now; it’s tough and time consuming and summer CR costs $100! Grade 9 orientation will take place on August 7th. We are inviting parents of our new 9 th graders (class of 2021) to come to orientation with their 9 th grader, something new in SY 17-18. All other students will return Tuesday, August 8th for their first day. The DOE implemented, a new food service lunch account tracking system. The entire state is having some implementation speed bumps. Questions; contact Laci Uyesono at the office. Again if you need anything please let us know.

Sincerely, Anne Kane, Principal Page 2 RED RAIDER NEWS April, May & June 2017 Franchise. Red Raider News Student Activities

Issue 4. February-March ‘17

Hi Students and Parents of Kauai High,

It’s an exciting time for our students; more than half the year is gone and we are that much closer to the end of the year. We continue to show our Red Raider Pride and Spirit through are school activities.

Stop If You Love Me

The Stop If You Love Me campaign was a week- long event. Each day during lunch we had an event or activity promoting safe driving and to warn kids about the dangers of distracted driving. One activity we had virtual reality goggles to simulate the consequences of using your phone while driving. Another day was the distracted driving obstacle course. Obstacles like going over and under things were placed along a path; the catch was you had to answer texts during the course. The last day of the week the Kauai High Student Government all dressed up with their campaign spirit shirts, hats, and signs while chanting a cheer about driving safe as the students walked to their car after school. “Hey you! Don’t text and drive! Don’t hit reply, just stay Alive!” Talent Show

On Friday, February 3rd, 2017 Kauai High School held our annual school Talent Show. There were more than 30 extremely talented participants in this year’s show. The 4 judges each with a talented skill of their own, Mr. Damien Nash, Dr. Cher Ellwood, Ms. Nina Saraos, Mr. Miyasato, and community judge, Mr. Donovan Pegeder determined the top 5 winners. Before announcing the top 5, a people’s choice winner was awarded to band Detrivore, consisting of Jacob McCune, Connor Hoovler, Carlos Rivera-Carano and Alex Trujillo.

All Sports Assembly All Sports Assembly is the time where Kauai High honors each of its 16 sports. A girl and boy are picked by the team’s coaches to represent their sport. The theme was “Literally All Sports”, I mean it is for all sports, right? Each grade performed their lip syncs and displayed their banners/decorations based on the sports they picked. Overall Seniors got 1st, then Juniors, Sophomores, and last Freshman. The cheerleaders, mascot, “Flashpointe” and “Paper Clip Squad” Band entertained the crowd.
