It is the library of a scientist and thinker rather than that of a collector, and the books are practically all modern. While the owner's main interests were scientific, his library betokens a vital interest in the deeper problems of religion, philosophy and the social and political development of man. Only a complete list of authors and titles, which will be undertaken as soon as possible, could give an adequate idea of the scope and variety of this collection. Such a large collection of modern books naturally contains many which are already in the Library. Derthonal, Typis Nicolai Violae, 1622 (Dept of Printed Books). Paolo (or, as he was christened, Cesare), the author of this work, was bishop of Tortona (Derthona) in Northern Italy from 1620 to 1644, and was noted in his day as a preacher, philosopher, theologian and patron of letters. Books printed at Tortona are now very scarce. This is a good, clean copy in limp vellum, and the title is printed in red and black with the arms of the bishop in woodcut. The Trial and life of Eugene Aram; several of his letters and poems; and his plans and specimens of an Anglo-Celtic lexicon. By Michael Fryer. Richmond, 1832 (Dept of Printed Books). Eugene Aram, the prototype of Bulwer's novel of that title, was born in 1704 at Ramsgill, Yorkshire. In 1759 he was found guilty of murder and executed. Aram was a self-taught scholar of undoubted ability, and specialised in languages. He was among the first, if not actually the first, to perceive the affinity of Celtic to other European languages, and his 'Anglo-Celtic lexicon,' although it is vitiated by the tendency, common in his day, to see the Asiatic relative of European languages in Hebrew, will always deserve mention in the history of Celtic philology. MORRIS PARRY 1943089 Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1942-43 Disgrifiad / Description The Morris Parry, Chester, Collection. (See Journal of the Welsh Bibliographical Society, July 1943, pp. 42-4.) Thanks to the good-will and co-operation of his trustees, the Library has been able to purchase the library, both books and manuscripts, of the late Morris Parry, Chester (d. 1943). For many years Morris Parry had collected copies of Welsh books printed in Chester and many English books relating to Wales which were also printed there. These he described in detail from time to time in the Welsh newspapers Y Brython, Y Clorianydd and Y Cymro. Subsequently a few copies of these press contributions were bound by him into volumes, each prefaced by a chronological conspectus. It is proposed to retain intact this collection of Chester printed books as an example of the output of the printing presses of one town. The collection is particularly strong in ballads, pamphlets and periodicals. The manuscripts include notebooks of John Price ('Ioan Machno'); a commonplace book by Isaac Ambrose Lloyd, 1823; a collection of poems by Robert Hughes (Neuadd y Blawd); sermon notes; a collection of autographs including letters by R. Brereton, 1620, and Owen Hughes (Beaumaris), 1675, and papers relating to excise, militia and ordnance, 17th-18th cent.; transcripts of letters concerning a protest against Rev William Williams ('Caledfryn') as an adjudicator, 1863; a minute book of 'Cymdeithas Cymry Caer', 1893; addresses and essays by Morris Parry and files of biographical and bibliographical material collected by him; press cuttings, loose and mountet, and the following numbers of Morris Parry's made-up volumes of press cuttings, with printed title page and preface, under the title of 'CRIBIN CAER' - Series 3, No. 5 and two unnumbered issues, Series 4, Nos 1-44 and ten unnumbered issues, and Series 5, No. 23 and three unnumbered issues. Fifty lantern slides of views of old Chester and title-pages of Chester-printed Welsh books. A large collection of engraved topographical prints, portraits, photographs and other miscellanea. Incunabula purchased during the year include: (1) Summa collationum, by Johannes Gallensis, printed at Cologne by Ulrich Zell, c. 1470. The author, usually called John of Wales, is supposed to have been a Welsh Franciscan. He was a professor at Oxford and Paris and an envoy to the insurgent Welsh in 1282. This work is considered to be the first work by a Welshman ever to be printed. This edition also is apparently the first, being earlier than the edition described in Addenda and Corrigenda to the Handlist of Incunabula in the National Library of Wales (No. 13A). Ten leaves inserted at the end contain, in manuscript, alphabetical tables of the topics and of the authors quoted in the work. Both are by the same hand and the former is dated Sept. 6, 1483. (2) De vocabulis rei militaris by Modestus, printed by Eucharius Silber, Rome, 1487. An interesting example from an early Italian press. (3) Works, with commentaries and appendices, of Publius Papinius Statius, printed by Jacobus de Paganinus, Venice, 1490. A specimen of the work of an Italian press not hitherto represented in the Library. Mynegai Caer, Biwmares.

BACHYMBYD 1943109 Ffynhonnell / Source The Right Honourable Lord Bagot, Blithfield. Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1942-43 Disgrifiad / Description THE BAGOT COLLECTION OF DEEDS AND PAPERS, removed from Blithfield, Staffordshire, and numbering more than 2,000 schedule items. This is in addition to several boxes of later deeds and papers, which Lord Bagot had earlier placed on deposit, from the bomb-wrecked offices of Messrs Foyer, White and Prescott in Essex Street, London. The Blithfield section of the deposit had been removed there from Pool Park, Denbighshire, when that residence was sold in 1928. The present group divides itself conveniently into four classes: 1. MINISTERS' ACCOUNTS. These all relate to the estates of the Devereux, Lords Ferrers and Chartley and consist of twenty-one rolls ranging from 6 to 10 Henry IV and 17 Henry VIII to 5 Edward VI. The Ministers' Accounts proper number nine rolls from 17 Henry VIII to 4 Edward VI and include accounts of Bicknor, Llanthomas and Hay, Penkelly and Webley. The remaining twelve rolls consist of Receiver Generals' Accounts, two for the years 6-8 and 8-10 Henry IV and ten ranging from 17 Henry VIII to 5 Edward VI. This class forms an invaluable addition to the collection of Ministers' Accounts which the National Library is steadily building up. 2. DEEDS. The deeds, most of which have already been catalogued in detail, number 1,149. They range from 1260 to the eighteenth century and cover lands in the counties of Denbigh, Merioneth, Caernarvon, Montgomery, and Flint, though the great majority relate to the two first-named counties. The Denbighshire deeds date from the reign of Henry III to the eighteenth century, and those for Merioneth generally from the reign of Henry VIII to the eighteenth century. The great majority of the deeds for both counties cover the second half of the sixteenth century and the seventeenth century, with a few of the eighteenth century. For the respective properties in those counties, the Rhûg estate in Merioneth and the Bachymbyd and Pool Park estates in Denbighshire, the deeds are comprehensive and form a most valuable acquisition. They cover the lordships of Denbigh, Ruthin and Dyffryn , Bromfield, Maelor Saesneg and Glyndyfrdwy, with a number by barons of Edeyrnion and Dinmael. The great interest of many of their items is evidenced by the full particulars relating to four which appear in the 1943 number of The National Library of Wales Journal. The first is the only known grant of David ap Gruffydd, 1260, of lands in the modern counties of Denbigh and Caernarvon; the second the only known grant by Owen ap Gruffydd of Glyndyfrdwy (Owen Glyndwr) of land at Mwstwr, 1392; the third an exceptional valuation in Welsh of lands of Rhys ab Elise, a baron of Dinmael, about 1530; the fourth a certificate (1657) by a Welshwoman from Merioneth of the death in 1655 in 'the island of Virginia' of a servant who had gone there with her and her husband about a year previously. 3. LEGAL PAPERS. This class numbers 219 items, most of which are concerned with the Chancery suits between William Salesbury of Rhûg, the heir of Owen Salesbury, the eldest son of Colonel William Salesbury, and Sir Walter Bagot, Bt., the husband of Jane, the daughter and sole heiress of Charles Salesbury, his second son. These causes ran from 1674 to 1677. Of greater public interest are the papers relating to the indictment of Gabriel Salesbury for forgery of a deed by Colonel William Salesbury, the defendant's flight abroad, and his subsequent repentance. 4. CORRESPONDENCE AND MISCELLANEOUS PAPERS. Items in this class which have already been perused in detail total more than 400. The correspondence, which provides the greatest number of items, is mainly of the seventeenth century. The items of the sixteenth century are of special interest. Letters of 1564 and 1577 from Jenkyn Gwyn to John Salesbury of Rhûg relate to Edeyrnion, one of them stating that 'it is held by servicium baroniae every jot of it, for all are barons or hold by grant from the barons, which is one'. A letter of October 5, 1580, from Anne, Countess of Warwick, has the pathetic endorsement 'a worthy honourable letter from the Lord and Lady Warwick to my father upon his deathbed'. Among other correspondents are Sir John Trevor, later Speaker and Master of the Rolls, Godfrey Goodman, bishop of Gloucester, Myddeltons, Wynnes and Thelwalls to the Salesburys. Among valuable items in the miscellaneous papers are some relating to the tithes of Llanynys, 1652-3; the sequestration papers of William Salesbury and his son Charles; papers relating to the barony of Dinmael, 1660-1751; rentals of the Denbighshire and Merioneth estates from 1611 onwards; and Salesbury and Bagot wills. Mynegai Llundain, Llantomas (Mitchell Troy), Pencelli, Castell Weble, Weobley Castle, Sir Ddinbych, Sir Feirionnydd, Sir Gaernarfon, Sir Drefaldwyn, Sir Fflint, Y Rug, Bagot, Dinbych, Rhuthun, Maelor Gymraeg, Iâl, Edeirnion, Mystwyr, Caerloyw, Bachymbyd.
