Doe Maar is a Dutch ska band with punk and reggae influences whose career peaked from to They are one of the most successful pop bands in Dutch history. Piet Dekker, with whom Jansz played in The Slumberlandband and The Rumbones , introduced him to Jan Hendriks and Carel Copier in the spring of at the farm of Gé van de Donk, who later became their sound engineer. Recordings from this meeting exist on which they played, without any rehearsal, all the Dutch-language songs Jansz had written at that time. Copier came up with the idea of the name after hearing the never officially recorded song "Doe maar". When Jansz was asked to form the resident band of that year's Festival of Fools, he added five more members to the band: singers Truus de Groot later Nasmak , Anouk Strijbosch, Wim van Oevelen the band's eventual tour manager , and clowns Mart de Corte and Jan Bogaerts. Afterwards, the 9-piece line-up was reduced to the original four: Ernst Jansz keyboards, sax, percussion , Jan Hendriks guitar , Carel Copier drums , and Piet Dekker bass. Dekker turned out to be a songwriter as well. One of his songs appeared in on a sampler album titled Uitholling overdwars , made up of new Dutch-language bands. The band also released their self-titled debut album on the Telstar label, omitting the sampler track "Blozen" 'blushing' ; along with the ska and reggae influences in "Hé hé", "Als de morgen komt" 'when morning comes' , "Regen" 'rain' , "Je liet me staan" 'you left me' , and "Er verandert nix" 'nothing really changes' , which became their trademark sound, there were also punk, rock 'n' roll, and calypso influences on this first album.

  • Had Ik Maar Een Tijdmachine I Wish I Had a Time Machine
Had ik maar een tijdmachine I wish I had a time machine NEDERHOP IN THE NETHERLANDS BETWEEN 1995 AND 2015 STUDENT NAME: LYSANNE JANSEN STUDENT NUMBER: 415955 SUPERVISOR: DR. S. VAN GINHOVEN CULTURAL ECONOMICS AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP ERASMUS SCHOOL OF HISTORY, CULTURE AND COMMUNICATION ERASMUS UNIVERSITY ROTTERDAM MASTER THESIS JUNE 8, 2016 Had ik maar een tijdmachine I wish I had a time machine Abstract A quantitative content analysis on Nederhop records within music charts is used to discover how Nederhop has developed over time and what its current situation is. By investigating the presence of Nederhop records on chart lists based on radio airplay, record sales, downloads and streaming data it is measured whether Nederhop has gained institutional recognition and popularity over the period 1995 to 2015. The research shows it took almost ten years before Nederhop records were able to reach a wide audience on a regular base. However, this applies more to the Nederhop records that were sold physically, downloaded or streamed, rather than the Nederhop records that received airplay by the radio institutions. Although Nederhop records that used styles as Old Skool or Hardcore rap also did reach a wider audience, they mostly disappeared from the charts over time, which led to the charts representing mostly crossover Nederhop records. Keywords: Nederhop; popularity; institutionalization; music charts; content analysis Acknowledgements For the time being this will be the final product of my academic career. Within this program I was able to link two of my interests, namely the world of arts and how it operates within the economy, next to how each person and organization acts on certain values that are sometimes hard to connect to those of others.

  • Hard Work Pays Off
Hard Work Pays Off The popularity of Dutch hip-hop/rap in the 21st Century Master’s Thesis Cultural Economics and Entrepreneurship Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication Erasmus University Rotterdam Student name: Renee Pothof Student number: 474678 Course number: CC4150 Thesis supervisor: Dr. Hans Abbing Second reader: Sophie Jacobs (PhD) 12-06-2018 Hard Work Pays Off Abstract Dutch hip-hop/rap (Nederhop) seems to have become more popular in the Netherlands in the recent years. However, no scientific research about whether Nederhop indeed became more popular and successful and what the reasons behind this popularity and success are has been conducted yet. To fill up on this gap, this research examines if Nederhop indeed became more popular in the Netherlands in recent years and what the reason or reasons are that Nederhop has become this important in the Dutch music industry and this omnipresent in the Dutch music charts. The research methods are threefold and consist of a chart analysis of three yearly music charts from 1989 onwards, semi-structured interviews with N = 3 people working in the Nederhop music industry, and a survey distributed to N = 254 consumers of (Dutch) hip-hop/rap. Data from the music charts, data from the interviews, and data from the survey show that indeed Dutch hip-hop/rap has become more popular in the Netherlands over the last few years. The research shows that there are five possible explanations for this popularity and success: the ability to distribute music more easily because of technological changes, the availability of information about the genre, positive and negative media attention to the genre, changes in the Dutch culture, and internal changes of the music.
