All have a close connection with the area. William Gardner personal papers William Gardner lived in Stenhousemuir. Shows soundings in fathoms A1261.002 1938 Navigational plan of Firth of Forth, St Abb's Head to the Forth Bridge, surveyed by Lt F W L Thomas, 1852-1856, re- surveyed by Capt Usborne Moore, 1897 and corrections to 1938 David Gold personal papers David Gold was born in Falkirk on 29th November 1892, the son of David Gold, manager of the Crown Stables/Garage in Newmarket Street. On leaving school he was employed as a grocer's boy and then a vanman and at the age of 22 years and 2 months joined the Stirlingshire Constabulary. In the register he was noted as a Protestant, 5ft 9ins tall, auburn hair, grey eyes and a fresh complexion. On 18th October 1915 he resigned from the police to join the army. He served as a gunlayer in the Royal Garrison Artillery and subsequently suffered from hearing problems. He attained the rank of sergeant and was awarded the Military Medal for bravery, rescuing three wounded men under fire near Vimy Ridge in April 1917. He rejoined the police in 1919 and was presented by them with a silver basket to celebrate his award of the MM. He also received a certificate from Falkirk Burgh Council. His first wife, Jane Brown, died on 17th August 1921. He then married Agnes Braid and had the following children: David Gold 3.3.1923, William Braid 26.4.1924 and Alice Hardie Brown 15.9.1926 Medals and related items are held in the object collections of Falkirk Museums. Reference Date Description No A1652.001 16 July 1919 Certificate of transfer to reserves on demobilisation issued to Sergeant David Gold A1652.002 16 July 1919 Certificate awarded by the Burgh of Falkirk to David Gold in recognition of services during the Great War Falkirk Archives (Archon Code: GB558) Gorman family papers John Gorman was born at Campsie in 1868 and became a plasterer/slater to trade. At the age of 19 years he joined the 2nd Battalion Scot's Guards and served for 7 years before returning to Lennoxtown to work for John Wright, slater. He left in August 1894 and was placed on the reserve list. He joined the Stirlingshire Constabulary, but in 1899 he was called up and served a further 4 years in the Boer War, being discharge in August 1903. After this John Gorman returned to the Stirlingshire Constabulary and carried out his duties at Airth and Slamannan for a total period of 13 years and 10 months until 1911 (see general notes for police record). He then got a position as janitor at the Northern School and with the Carron Company, first as a warehouseman, then as night watchman, then in the Enquiry office. He rejoined the 2nd Battalion in August 1914 and was discharged in August 1915 due to his wounds - a gun shot to the chest. His son John Murray Gorman, was killed in action on 13 Oct 1918 whilst serving with the Gordon Highlanders. After the war at Carron Works, now as Yard Policeman, which he held until his retirement. The family lived at 21 Gordon Terrace, Carron Road, Falkirk. He died in 1948. He had four sons - William, Pat, James and John, and four daughters - Ella, Sarah, Celia and Agnes.
