Kerse Estates

The lands of Kerse were granted to William Menteith in 1513 by James IV, then confiscated in 1631 and granted to Sir Thomas Hope. The barony and estate of West Kerse was purchased in 1752 by Laurence Dundas who became 1st Baronet of Kerse in 1762. It was Laurence Dundas who laid the foundation of the town of Grangemouth. In 1768 he was elected to Parliament for Edinburgh, a constituency he represented until his death in 1781. Sir Laurence was succeeded by his only son, Sir Thomas, who was MP for Stirling County in 1768-69 and was created Baron Dundas of Aske in 1794. He died in 1820. Thomas, Lord Dundas, was succeeded by his son Lawrence, who was created Earl of Zetland by Queen Victoria in 1838, a year before his death in 1839. Thomas Kier collection

Thomas Kier was Provost of Falkirk from 1857 to 1867. He was born in 1811 in Roberts Wynd and died at his home, Newlands, on the Carse in 1890. He was educated at the Parochial School and took up trade as a grocer and was still working into his old age at his High Street shop. He had a brief spell as a Councillor from 1839 to 1841 and did not return until 1858 when he was asked to lead the campaign which culminated in the passage of the Falkirk Police and Improvement Act of 1859. He was Provost for 9 years; he left office in 1867 and was rewarded with accolades and the usual expensive silver plate. During his time the town's general condition improved greatly especially in sanitation, lighting and policing.

As well as his involvement with the Council he was for many years Chairman of the Parochial Board and was in many ways responsible for the building of the Poorhouse in High Station Road (1857) and the new Cemetery in Camelon. He was a leading light in the Falkirk Trustees Savings Bank for 30 years and was also a member of the first school board following the 1872 Education Act.

He was a founder member of Falkirk Bowling Club and was a keen curler. Around 1850 he purchased a farm in Denny called Linns and thereafter styled himself Thomas Kier of Linns.
