PART TWO: MEDIUM AND LARGE SCALE MAP SETS

443

INTRODUCTION TO PART TWO

Part Two (entries 1770 through 1855) is a catalog of medium-scale and large-scale maps of from the multiple-sheet Series Map Collection. This listing includes the Irish Ordnance Survey’s well known maps on the scale of 6 inches to the mile (1:10,560).

A multiple-sheet series is defined as a number of distinctly yet physically separate map sheets intended by the author to depict a specific geographic area. Each map sheet in the group, or series, is identified by common unifying traits such as scale, format, and sequential numbering of the map sheets.

The bibliographic entries in Part Two catalog the 86 map series in the Division's files, collectively representing over 10,000 individual map sheets. These map sheets were published by Irish, British, and German government and commercial mapping establishments from the mid- 19th century to the present. The scales of the series range from 1:500,000 (2 sets) to 1:1,000 (2 sets), while the majority of the series were published at the scale of 1:2,500 (28 sets of the Irish Ordnance Survey's 25-inch to the mile series).
