AIMS Interim Municipal Report Card – Socio-Economic Status

Socio-Economic Status

The Socio-Economic Status (SES) indicators cover a range of topics: municipalities’ age profiles, labour force measures, educational achievement, and family structure. As data become available we will add measures for youth education and employment.

The dependency ratio provides an indication of a population’s split between those of working age and those who are not. A high value here means that a larger proportion of the population is composed of children and seniors; a low value means that working age people comprise a larger proportion of the population. The province’s larger municipalities generally have figures just under the provincial average of 0.34. Both the high end and the low end of the rankings are composed chiefly of smaller communities. Among these bookends, there are a variety of scenarios, including municipalities whose low dependency ratio is driven primarily by a low proportion of seniors (e.g., New Maryland and Saint-Isidore), municipalities whose high dependency ratio is driven by a high proportion of seniors (e.g., Saint-Louis de Kent, Rogersville, and Riverside-Albert), and municipalities whose low dependency ratio is driven by a low proportion of youth (e.g., Pointe-Verte and Saint-François-de-Madawaska).

The best labour market statistics – high participation rate, high employment rate, low unemployment rate, and high incidence of high- status employment – are often found in the bedroom communities to the province’s major cities, including , New Maryland, Rothesay, Quispamsis, Riverview, and Dieppe. Other smaller communities like Meductic and Florenceville also have favourable labour market statistics. Alma, Maisonnette, Port Elgin, Stanley, Kedgwick, and Riverside-Albert are among those having a more difficult time on the labour market front.

The education results overlap the labour market measures to some extent. The municipalities with the highest proportions of people who have graduated from high school and who have acquired post-secondary education include Dieppe, Florenceville, , Hampton, New Maryland, Quispamsis, Rothesay, and St. Andrews. At the lower end of the scale are Bas-, Grand-Anse, Le Goulet, Rogersville, and Saint-François-de-Madawaska.

The single-parent family ratio features both larger communities and smaller ones at both ends of the ranking.

There is a considerable range in median household incomes across New Brunswick, ranging from New Maryland’s high of approximately $84,000 down to Maisonnette’s low of just over $26,000. Many of the top ten spots for income belong to the suburbs and bedroom communities such as Quispamsis, Rothesay, and Riverview. Florenceville and Tide Head also report relatively high

median household incomes. The lower end of the rankings is largely composed of smaller communities that are further from the major population centres.

House values and rent levels follow a broadly similar pattern to the median household income statistic. High values tend to be found near, but not necessarily in, the major population centres and lower values tend to be found in smaller, more remote communities. Interesting exceptions to this general rule include Cambridge-Narrows which has the highest average residential property value in the province, and Tide Head which has the ninth-highest median household income but also the fifth-lowest cost of rental accommodations.
