Reaction

Players and fans alike have had a mixed reaction to the system. Broadcasters also enjoy it as it produces one more game than the single elimination format.[3] Considering the format is expanding to more curling events and more sports and games, it is reasonable to say its popularity and acceptance is increasing. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8 “I know there are influences like TV and politics involved here. I just fear we’ll lose the con- nection of what we have now as a unit. There’s a camaraderie factor here and I’m not sure that should be touched. I think we have a great mix and I’ve been involved in it for so long and I can see that it’s growing. I can’t see playing around with it.” Well, so much for that side of the equation. One skip from a have-not curling province isn’t quite so adamant. “I’d be supportive of it,” says Heather Strong, the nine-time Newfoundland rep whose opinion has to be respected. “It would give those last-place teams an opportunity to get competition prior to the next tournament,” she suggested. “I’m OK with reps from all parts of Canada being represented in national championships.” How do you handle the Territorial problem of a lack of teams? “They’d have to put a team together to challenge,” says Strong. “It would be an uphill battle at this stage if they don’t have a team represented.” There’s one other scenario that might derail Territories teams all together. “The dice would roll and they all might be out,” said Strong. “But we’re in a similar situation back home. Our championship doesn’t go to Labrador any more because they don’t send any teams to our provincials. Until they enter a team the year prior, the event will never go there.” But Strong understands the Territorial plight. “I can see the frustration in investing the money for big plane fares to fly around the north.” When the Mixed experimented with three Territories teams last fall in Sudbury, the N.W.T. squad skipped by veteran Steve Moss won six games. But the other Territories teams? Nunavut beat the Yukon. It was the first time four Nunavut curlers ever won a game in any national championship. That’s why Nunavut was 1-12 and the Yukon was 0-13. All of which suggests these mooted changes should be works in progress . . . and nothing more. Newfoundland/Labrador skip Heather Strong: Supportive

18 BC MB 19 AB QC Friday, February 24, 2012 Page 21 Carter kicks bug, shoots 94% in return By Larry Wood Heart Chart Editor Positively Impacting Your Business Through Sasha Carter, the ebullient vice-skip with Kelly Scott’s Kelowna entry at the current Telecommunication Scotties Tournament Of Hearts, turned in a spectacular 94 per cent shooting performance Thursday morning following two days off with a malady compounded by her pregnancy. & Data Strategies. Carter, of course, is a Scott fixture. Also a Scotties fixture. The native of Ashern, Man., has been throwing rocks for Scott since they won a world junior title in 1995. Business Telephone Systems Scott moved to Kelowna in the early days of the current century and Carter, then Structured Cabling Systems Bergner, followed suit. Two Canadian, one world championship and seven Scotties appearances in eight years Converged Technologies followed, all with Carter playing second. Wireless Technologies But Carter never has felt as physically flattened as she has been this week. And her problem has been twofold. Building Security “They said I couldn’t kick it (the flu) because everything I was taking was having to work Telephone Networks for someone else,” said Carter at mid-day Thursday. “Every fluid I was taking, I wasn’t actually hydrating myself. It all went to the baby. Business Partners That was the difference. My stomach was very sore, cramping, and that was the dehy- dration from the flu. I couldn’t get hydrated no matter what I drank.” Proud Sponsor of Carter, whose due date is early August, said the doctor told her she’d have been a week kicking the flu if she hadn’t gone on the IV to solve the hydration issue. www.telebyte.ca “That was crazy,” she said. “I’ve never been that sick in my life. Like, you’d bounce back and feel good and then, urrgh, no. Toll Free 1.800.565.1849 “When I left on Tuesday and I was feeling ill again, Gerry (coach Richard) said to me, ‘take the whole day off’ — you’re no good if you’re not here for the weekend’. “I would have loved to come back but I knew I wouldn’t play the next morning. That’s how rotten I was feeling. I would have loved to play against the Territories and get back into it but knew I couldn’t.” Carter was moved up to third for provincials in January after rookie Dailene Sivertson had played the role during the cashspiel season. Sivertson was conscripted after veteran vice-skip Jeanne Schrader, coach Richard’s daughter, decided to take a winter off to have a baby. Carter said the comfort fac- tor was normal on Thursday. “It’s good, because the ice hasn’t changed much and I’ve been so doped out the days I haven’t been here that I don’t feel like I’ve missed anything. I don’t feel like I’ve missed out because I’ve been sleeping all the time. “I wasn’t 100 per cent this morning but good enough to curl and I’ll go and rest now.” Maybe not 100 per cent but so close nobody was noticing. Meanwhile, everything is normal with the the child. “They did an ultrasound,” said Carter. “I think it’s a tough one in there. Or, maybe, we both are.” Sasha Carter Page 22 HeartChart Tidbits from press row Scotties Notebook LARRY WOOD Heart Chart Editor

Rebecca Jean MacDonald has had considerably more success at the Scotties than this year playing third for Kim Dolan, a good buddy. “It was a tough week,” said MacDonald. “We had one terrible game but otherwise everything was down to the wire.” The two were co-chairs at last year’s Scotties renewal at Charlottetown. MacDonald first surfaced at the Scotties in 1995 with Dolan at third and skipped the Islanders to eight wins. Two years later the combo won five with MacDonald directing. And two years after that they won six. In 2003 MacDonald played third for Suzanne Birt (then Gaudet) and won a whopping Island record 10. Back on the teehead in 2005, MacDonald won a measly four, one more than this year. Then she teamed up with her sister Robyn, calling the shots while Robyn tossed the last rocks, and won seven at Victoria in 2009. What’s remembered there, though, is the fact that Robyn had two chances on out-turn layups with skip’s last rocks to eliminate Jennifer Jones and her Team Canada outfit in a tiebreaker and narrowly missed them both — in the 10th and 11th ends “I was quite happy coming here to play third,” said MacDonald. “Kim wanted to skip again and I had full confidence in her. I’ve always enjoyed playing third.” Now Dolan, 53, has talked of hanging up the brush and the curling shoes. “Who knows what the future holds,” said MacDonald. “I’ll be sad to see her leave the game. She’s a great friend. She’s a great curler and it has nothing to do with me. “We have some good young curlers on the Island and we’ll just have to put some new teams to- gether and see what we can come up with.” Sister Robyn MacPhee already has decided to take next season off so the sister act isn’t in the im- mediate cards. “I really enjoyed playing with her and we had good success, so who knows.” One thing, though. “I don’t think I’ll be ready to hang ‘em up yet,” said MacDonald. “I still enjoy the game too much. I feel I have some time left to put into it. We’ll see what happens.” ------Marie-France Larouche was talking about getting accustomed to the wing of arena ice at the Scotties. “We don’t ice like that back home,” said Larouche, who admitted her father Camil is the icemaker of the home Etchemin club in St-Romuald. “He makes the ice but it’s not the same,” Larouche said. “It doesn’t hav the curl. He tries to make ice like the arena but it’s hard, really hard.” It might be suggested that if La- rouche really wants his daughter to excel in the arena, he might try a little harder. ••• Manitoba Second Jill Officer says she is enjoying her return to the big stage, with a bit of a difference. “The biggest difference is really the things that go on between games because I’m going back to my hus- band (Devlin Hinchey) and my baby (daughter Camryn) as opposed to my teammates, so that’s a little bit differ- ent,” she said. Nevertheless she’s glad to be back and so is her team. Kaitlyn Lawes, Jill Officer, Dawn Askin of Manitoba.
