The mountains get their name 'Smoky" from the smoke-like haze which envelopes it. The Great Smoky Mountains were established as a National Park in 1934 and are one of the largest protected land areas east of the Rocky Mountains. With more than 500,000 acres of forest (800 square miles), divided between Tennessee and North Carolina, the Smokies contain an enormous variety of plants and animals.

Each year the Park receives more than nine million visitors, which is the highest of any of the national parks. The Park is a delightful mix of forest wildlands and restored log cabins and barns, reminding us of the pioneers who carved a living from this wilderness.
