Grand Marais Art Colony Residency Series & Studio Access The Art Colony provides artists with independent work space in professional studios amidst the backdrop of a stunning landscape. An environment of creative freedom supports the process and development of new works, allowing for a combination of aesthetic inquiry, creative risk-taking, experimentation, and artistic development. See the options below and contact the Art Colony with any questions. Juried Artists-in-Residence | March 4 – 17 Two concurrent juried residencies are available in 2019, one in the Founders Hall multi-use Studio and one in the Eco-friendly Printmaking Studio. Juried residents are provided with two weeks of independent studio access, lodging, and a weekly stipend. Residents may choose to provide a community engagement component (optional) for an additional stipend. An optional critical response critique session is also available. Eco-friendly Printmaking Studio Founders Hall Multi-use Studio 1 Invited Residencies Invited residencies are granted to an artist who is mature in practice and has experience with residencies and/or working on in-depth independent projects. The artist is selected as part of a committee process and offers a community engagement component, introducing the community to a specific aspect of their expertise and artistic practice. There is no application process for this residency. Independent Residencies Select dates are available for independent residencies or cooperative studio access on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis for Art Colony members. Experience our professional studios (clay, glass, printmaking, and painting/multi-discipline) and find uninterrupted space and time to focus, rejuvenate, and be inspired. Artists are encouraged to call for availability and cost and other media are also welcome, including literary arts, sculpture, mixed media, photography, etc. -

Emphasizing the details of Curry's life and how they interlocked with national, historical, and political happenings between 1937 and 1942, Kendall focuses par ticularly on the ideological and cultural atti tudes that embroiled Curry, newspaper editors, and thousands of Kansans in the mural contro versy. Most of this smoothly written and adequately illustrated study centers on the cultural back grounds of the Coronado and John Brown panels in the Kansas murals, with less analysis of other sections and details. Placing her art history at the vortex of popular culture, the author pro vides revealing insights into the varied milieus of the 1930s, Curry's intellectual backgrounds, and Kansas history and experience that caused the debate. -

REGiONALlST PAINTING AND AMERICAN STUDIES KENNETH J. LABUDDE Regionalism in American painting brings to mind immediately the period of the 1930's when the Middlewesterners JohnSteuart Curry, Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton enjoyed great reputation as the_ painters of Ameri can art. Curry, the Kansan; Benton, the Missourian; and Wood, the Iowan, each wandered off to New York, to Paris, to the great world of art, but each came home again to Kansas City, Cedar Rapids and Madison, Wisconsin. Only one of the three, Benton, is still living. At the recent dedication of his "Independence and the Opening of the West" in the Truman Library the ar tist declared it was his last big work, for scaffold painting takes too great a toll on a man now 72. Upon this occasion he enjoyed the acclaim of those gathered, but as a shrewdly intelligent, even intellectual man, he may have reflected that Wood and Curry, both dead foi* close to twenty years now, are slipping into obscur ity except in the region of the United States which they celebrated. Collec tors, whether institutional or private, who have the means and the interests to be a part of the great world have gone on to other painters. There are those who will say so much the worse for them, but I am content not to dwell on that issue but to speculate instead about art in our culture and the uses of art in cultural studies. I will explain that I am not convinced by those who hold with the conspir acy theory of art history, whether it be a Thomas Craven of yesterday or a John Canaday of today. -

Juley & Son Collection, Smithsonian American Art Museum BIOGRAPHY John Steuart Curry was one of the three major practitioners of American regionalist painting, along with Thomas Hart Benton (American, 1889 - 1975) and Grant Wood (American, 1891 - 1942). Curry was born on a farm near Dunavant, Kansas, on November 14, 1897. His parents had traveled to Europe on their honeymoon, and his mother, Margaret, returned with prints of European masterworks that hung on the walls of the family home. She enrolled her son in art lessons at a young age, and his family supported his decision to drop out of high school in 1916 to study art. Curry worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad and attended the Kansas City Art Institute for a month before moving to Chicago, where he studied at the Art Institute for two years. In 1918 he enrolled at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. Curry decided to pursue commercial illustration, and in 1919 he began to study with illustrator Harvey Dunn in Tenafly, New Jersey. From 1921 to 1926, Curry’s illustrations appeared in publications such as the Saturday Evening Post and Boy’s Life. In 1923, while living in New York City, he married Clara Derrick; shortly thereafter he bought a studio at Otter Ponds near the art colony in Westport, Connecticut. In 1926 Curry stopped producing illustrations and left for Paris, where he took classes in drawing with the Russian teacher Vasili Shukhaev and studied old master paintings at the Louvre. -
The Ideology of Critical Regionalism As a Teaching and Design Resource for the Next 100 Years of Cela
THE IDEOLOGY OF CRITICAL REGIONALISM AS A TEACHING AND DESIGN RESOURCE FOR THE NEXT 100 YEARS OF CELA Hopman, David D. The University of Texas at Arlington, [email protected] 1 ABSTRACT Since its introduction as a term by Alexander Tzonis and Liane Lefaivre (Tzonis and Lefaivre, 1981), Critical Regionalism has emerged as a significant ideology in contemporary landscape architectural discourse worldwide that continues to merit closer attention as a framework for creative regional design. Kristine Woolsey wrote that the only constant in the process of Critical Regionalism is the quality of the ideological position of the architect that evolves over time through practice, experience, and the international debate of the profession (Woolsey, 1991). Looking towards the next 100 years of CELA, it is worth reflecting on where we are ideologically as a profession in relation to Critical Regionalism. Critical Regionalism can be broadly summarized as an embrace of contemporary and historical world culture as an indispensable part of a creative and expressive regionalist design process, a desire to provoke both intellectual (critical thinking) and sensual reactions to a design by the end user, and a broadening of the experience intended by design to embrace the importance of non-visual experience. Personal ideological positions related to Critical Regionalism are informed and modified by influences of region, contemporary culture, and aesthetic components such as environmental psychology, cultural rules, personal growth and creativity, and the appropriation of regional ecology and environmental forces. The author has used research into Critical Regionalism as a guiding ideology for both practice, research, and education for the past 25 years. -
BIOGRAPHIES John Antrobus
BIOGRAPHIES John Antrobus (1837–1907): Sculptor and painter of portraits, landscapes, and genre scenes (showing everyday life). Antrobus was born in England but came to Philadelphia in 1850. During his travels through the American West and Mexico, he worked as a portraitist before opening a studio in New Orleans. He served briefly with the Confederate Army during the Civil War before moving to Chicago. Antrobus sculpted both Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas and was the first artist to paint a portrait of Ulysses S. Grant (in 1863). Edward Atkinson (1827–1905): American political leader and economist who began his political career as a Republican supporter of the Free Soil movement. Atkinson fought slavery before the Civil War by helping escaped slaves and raising money for John Brown. After the Civil War, in 1886, Atkinson campaigned for future President Grover Cleveland and worked against imperialism (the movement to expand a nation’s territorial rule by annexing territory outside of the main country) after the Spanish-American War. Baker & Co (active, 19th century): Lithography firm associated with Louis Kurz. Thomas Ball (1819–1911): American sculptor who gained recognition for his small busts before creating more monumental sculptures. Notable works include one of the first statues portraying Abraham Lincoln as the Great Emancipator (1876), paid for by donations from freed slaves and African American Union veterans, which stands in Washington D.C.’s Lincoln Park. Ball also created a heroic equestrian statue of George Washington for the Boston Public Garden (1860–1864). He joined an expatriate community in Italy, where he received many commissions for portrait busts, cemetery memorials, and heroic bronze statues. -

Kemper Williams, private collectors, to maintain and expand their collections and to make them available to the public through research facilities and exhibitions. The Williams Research Center offers scholars access to the extensive print and microform holdings of its three Divisions. The Manuscript collections include letters, diaries, land tenure records, financial and legal documents, records of community organizations, New Orleans newspapers (1803 - present), and annotated printed items. These papers illuminate life in New Orleans and southern social and cultural history in the surrounding areas during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Women are represented throughout the Division's. Although the material listed in this guide is located within the Manuscripts Division, the other divisions also have significant holdings by and about women. The Curatorial Division has many paintings, drawings, photographs, and other three-dimensional objects by women. Information on these female artists, is contained in the division's artists' files. Collection highlights: Significant collections include the Wilkinson-Stark papers especially for their coverage of Mary Farrar Stark Wilkinson's subversion of the invading federal army to protect her children, and the correspondence of Eliza Jane Nicholson, owner and editor of the Times-Picayune in the 1870s and 1880s. -

© 2006, School of Design 1. Rex, King of Carnival, Monarch of Merr iment Rex’s float carries the King of Carnival and his pages through the streets of New Orleans on Mardi Gras day. 2. His Majesty’s Bandwagon A band rides on this permanent float to provide music for Rex and for those who greet him on the parade route. 3. The King’s Jesters Even the Monarch of Merriment needs jesters in his court. Rex’s jesters dress in Mardi Gras colors—purple, green, and gold. 4. The Boeuf Gras This is one of the oldest symbols of Mardi Gras, symbolizing the great feast on the day before Lent begins. 5. Title Float: “Beaux Arts and Letters” While Rex Processions of past years have presented the history and culture of far-flung civilizations, this year’s theme explores the joys and beauties of Rex’s own empire and domain. New Orleans has a long and rich artistic history and has produced a wealth of artists and writers of national and international renown. Sculptors and painters, writers and poets have called New Orleans home, and have found inspiration for their work in her history, culture, and landscapes. Mardi Gras, the celebration unique to this city, has influenced the work of many of our artists and writers. 6. John James Audubon (1785-1851) Audubon, the pre-eminent American painter of birds and wildlife, was born in Haiti and came to America at age eighteen, living in Pennsylvania and Kentucky before traveling south with little more than his gun and his painting equipment. -

The Story of Miss Florence and the Lyme Art Colony The story of Miss Florence and the Lyme Art Colony begins in the village of Old Lyme, Connecticut, located where the Connecticut River flows lazily into Long Island Sound. Florence Ann Griswold was born on December 25, or Christmas Day, in 1850. She was the youngest of four children. Florence grew up in a big yellow house with green shutters on Lyme Street, the main street of the town, with her two sisters, Helen Adele and Louise Augusta, and one brother Robert Harper, Jr. Their father was Captain Robert Harper Griswold, a sea captain who sailed packet boats from New York to London. Their mother, Helen Powers Griswold, took care of the family when her father was away at sea for weeks at a time. At school, Florence developed a great talent for music. She learned to play the guitar, piano, and harp quite well. After one of his voyages to London, her father surprised her with a fancy golden harp. As she grew older, friends and family began to call her “Miss Florence.” After the Captain retired from the sea, the family began to suffer from lack of money. To help out, the mother and daughters opened up the Griswold Home School to teach young ladies. Sadly, her brother died years before from an illness he caught at sea. The Home School was open for 14 years. At the school, Miss Florence taught mostly music. She and her sisters never married nor had any children. By the time she celebrated her 50th birthday, Florence was the only family member living in the house. -
