    Debate No. 05 of 27.03.2007 ORAL ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS CEMENT – PRICE & SUPPLY The Leader of the Opposition (Mr N. Bodha) (By Private Notice) asked the Minister of Industry, Small & Medium Enterprises, Commerce and Co-operatives whether in regard to the importation of cement on the local market, he will – (a) for the benefit of the House, obtain from the State Trading Corporation, information as to – (i) the consignments ordered and received and the price paid respectively by the Corporation and the private companies since January 2007; (ii) the arrangements, if any, made between the Corporation and the private companies in relation to the storage, sale and distribution thereof; (iii) whether the Corporation recently paid any compensation in connection therewith; and (b) state the policy relating to the price structure and the measures taken to ensure a regular supply thereof for the forthcoming months. The Minister of Industry, Small & Medium Enterprises, Commerce and Co-operatives (Dr. R. Jeetah): Mr Speaker, Sir, with your permission, I shall reply to PQ B/No. 65 together with the Private Notice Question. Allow me, Mr Speaker, Sir, to wholeheartedly thank the hon. Leader of the Opposition for giving me the opportunity to shed light on this issue of national interest which has unfortunately been blurred by certain quarters. In fact, I had planned to make a statement on this issue. I am confident that the House and the nation will stand enlightened and clarified on this matter. Mr Speaker, Sir, we are in the presence of a case wherein companies are more concerned with maximisation of its profits rather than ensuring regularity of supply.

Several media commentators hypothesised as to the nature of such exchanges, some going so far as to speculate about the possibility and desirability of an imminent 'gouvernement d’unité nationale' (national unity govern - ment - NUG). Not quite a NUG since the speculation was about an alliance between the MSM and the Labour Party, which might rope in Xavier Duval’s PMSD, but without spe- cifying whether the MMM would be a party to such a political arrangement. Neither poli- tical leader at that exchange has denied any such conjectures and for probably good rea - sons of their own.

    07.05.2019 PARLIAMENTARY QUESTION B/279 The Honourable Second Member for Grand River North West and Port Louis West (Mrs Selvon) To ask the Honourable Prime Minister, Minister of Home Affairs, External Communications and National Development Unit, Minister of Finance and Economic Development – Whether, in regard to the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation, he will, for the benefit of the House, obtain therefrom, information as to if consideration will be given for the advisability of increasing the number of channels thereof broadcasting in the kreole language? REPLY Madam Speaker, Section 4(a)(i) of the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation Act stipulates that the Corporation shall provide independent and impartial broadcasting services of information, education, culture and entertainment in Creole, Bhojpuri, French, English, Hindustani and such other languages spoken or taught in Mauritius as the Board may, with the approval of the Minister, determine. I am informed by the Officer-in-Charge of the MBC that, in line with its mandate, the Corporation ensures that its broadcasting programmes cater for the aspirations, needs and taste of its audience. In so far as television channels are concerned, the Senn Kreole on MBC Channel 17 is solely dedicated, (that is on a 24 hour 7 day basis), to provide viewers with a variety of programmes in terms of entertainment and promotion of the Creole culture and language. A daily Creole News Bulletin is broadcast on MBC 2 at 1900 hrs and simultaneously on Senn Kreole. Moreover, with a view to reaching a broader audience, an appreciable percentage of air time is also allocated to a mix of Creole and other languages on the following TV channels, namely – (i) MBC 1 48 % (ii) MBC 2 39 % (iii) MBC 3 72 % (iv) Youth and Sports Channel 50 % Madam Speaker, In regard to radio channels, I am informed by the Officer-in-Charge of the Corporation that 50% of air time on Radio Maurice and 65% of air time on Kool FM are dedicated to Creole language.
