London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1903. 4 INTRODUCTION John Henry Newman stands out as a courageous witness of what it means to search for the truth and be coherent with it; not only did he make of truth a vital option, he also reflected deeply on the way people can know the truth, assent to it and communicate it. Newman is widely known as an educator, a theologian, a philosopher, even a poet. He wrote on a wide variety of subjects, and his works show his concern for the real quandaries his contemporaries faced and his ability to connect with them. Although he did not consider himself a philosopher and did not subscribe to any philosophical tradition, he tackled the classical problems of truth, knowledge and belief in a novel and fruitful way. Truth could be identified as the focal point of his philosophical program. Newman’s life spanned for most of the nineteenth century, a time in which the illusions of modern philosophy with its ensuing rationalism and liberalism were quickly unfolding. He faced the growing skepticism he encountered not as a personal temptation, but as a searching contradiction for whose resolution he invested his heart and mind1. Along with his contemporaries, he reflected on the causes of the doubts that assailed them and developed his philosophy as an attempt to find a way forward. While Newman’s philosophical contributions have not received much attention in the past, this has changed in recent years2. However, philosophers who have studied Newman agree that, although he made 1 Cf. We celebrate this declaration by the Church that Dominic's life, his virtues and his self-sacrifice were such that he not only deserves our recognition, but that his life has inspired us and continues to be a beacon of light for us in our own Christian journey. Making ‘the sign of the cross’ goes back to the Early Church and belongs to all Christians. It’s a very theologically rich symbolic action! And did you know that Bonhoffer, practically a saint to Protestant Christians, often made the sign of the cross? (See below.) I grew up “thoroughly Protestant” and did not really become aware of “making the sign of the cross” in a thoughtful way until a few years ago, when I joined an Anglican church. Now it’s become a helpful act of devotion for me …. especially after I found this article by Stephen 1 Beale a few years ago (published online in November 2013) at http://catholicexchange.com/21-things-cross There is rich theology embedded in this simple sign, and as a non-Roman Catholic I appreciate all of the symbolism, and it does indeed deepen my spirituality and devotion. The history of making the symbolic motion goes back to the Early Church, more than a millennia before Protestants broke away in the Reformation.   • The CWG Will Review Aspects of Cathedral Management And
    The Archbishops of Canterbury and York have set up a Cathedrals Working Group, CWG, in response to a request made by the Bishop of Peterborough in his January 2017 Visitation Charge on Peterborough Cathedral for a revision to be carried out of the adequacy of the current Cathedrals Measure. The CWG will review aspects of cathedral management and governance and produce recommendations for the Archbishops on the implications of these responsibilities with regards to the current Cathedrals Measure. It will be chaired by the Bishop of Stepney, Adrian Newman, the former Dean of Rochester Cathedral, and the Dean of York, Vivienne Faull, will be the vice chair. The Working Group will look at a number of different areas of Cathedral governance, including training and development for cathedral deans and chapters, financial management issues, the procedure for Visitations, safeguarding matters, buildings and heritage and the role of Cathedrals in contributing to evangelism within their dioceses. The Bishop of Stepney and the Dean of York said: "Cathedrals contribute uniquely to the ecology of the Church of England, and we are a healthier, stronger church when they flourish. We are pleased to have this opportunity to review the structures that support their ministry, in order to enhance their role in church and society Cathedrals are one of the success stories of the Church of England, with rising numbers of worshippers. They are a vital part of our heritage and make an incalculable contribution to the life of the communities that they serve. This is an exciting opportunity for the Working Group to look at the different aspects of how Cathedrals work, and to ensure that the legislation and procedures they use are fit for purpose for their mission in the 21st century."
