eight THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT

Mrs. Diane C. Fisher will receive the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. DIANE C. FISHER Mrs. Diane C. Fisher is a devoted friend and alumna of The University of Akron. She has demonstrated her commitment to excellence in higher education through selfless contributions of her time and abilities on The University of Akron Board of Trustees. In addition, Mrs. Fisher and her late husband, Ronald, generously established two educational resources in the College of Business Administration that have made the University a national leader in the education of sales and sales management professionals. In 1990, Mr. and Mrs. Fisher funded the construction of the Carl V. and Clyde A. Fisher HSales Laboratory. The state-of-the-art facility is located within the College of Business Administration building, and includes electronic observation and videotape analysis of students as they hone their sales techniques. It is believed to be the first university lab in the U.S. devoted solely to sales education and training. Just three years later, the Fishers greatly expanded their commitment by establishing the Ronald R. and Diane C. Fisher Institute for Professional Selling. The institute’s mission is to enhance the image of the sales profession; to promote professional selling and sales management as rewarding, lifelong careers; to provide high-quality instruction to University students through sales major, minor, and certificate programs; to provide outstanding training to sales executives; and to conduct research that advances the field of sales. As a result of these efforts, the University’s program is ranked as one of the six best sales programs in the country, at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, according to Sales and Marketing Management Magazine. The program’s prestige has created significant career opportunities for Akron graduates. The Fishers’ efforts to support and enhance the profession of selling and sales management earned them a Special Recognition honor at the 33rd Annual National Sales and Marketing Month Awards Program in 2005. Although Mr. Fisher’s lifetime career in sales made this area a natural focus for the couple’s philanthropic activities, both he and Mrs. Fisher devoted their time and energy to support the University’s overall academic mission. Both served on the University’s Board of Trustees: Mr. Fisher from 1995 until his death in 1997, and Mrs. Fisher from 2000 to 2006. Mrs. Fisher was an active member of the Board of Trustees, chairing the External Affairs Committee and serving on the Facilities Planning and Oversight; Nominating; Rules; and Strategic Issues, Governance and Compliance committees. She also served as the Board’s representative on the Board of Friends of the Hower House, which oversees policies, operations, and fund raising for the Victorian mansion on the University campus. A vice president of Ronald R. Fisher Associates, Mrs. Fisher is a longtime resident of Akron, and has four daughters.

Chorus

The Alma Mater for The University of Akron was written by the Rev. Augustus B. Church, who was the last Universalist clergy to serve as president of Buchtel College (1901–1912). He also was the first person to assume the board responsibilities of chief executive officer. In fact, Church served both as president and as a trustee of the institution — as well as pastor of the First Universalist Church of Akron. Dr. Church understood the importance of higher education as a means to improve society, and he worked diligently on projects to successfully link the educational efforts of Buchtel College with the needs of a growing city. During his presidency, Buchtel College offered the world’s first courses in rubber chemistry (1909).

forty-three THE AKRON BLUE AND GOLD

The University of Akron’s fight song, “The Akron Blue and Gold,” was written in 1939 by Fred Waring, nationally known composer and leader of the wildly-popular band, “Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians.” In response to a request from the University’s student newspaper, Waring wrote “a distinctive song” for The University of Akron. “The Akron Blue and Gold” premiered over his NBC hookup on November 17, 1939, and has been used as the University’s fight song ever since. forty-four THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON: A PROUD TRADITION

The Ohio Universalist Convention established a small, liberal arts college in Akron in 1870 and named it for one of the city’s prominent industrialists, John R. Buchtel. It was Buchtel who led a group of 100 individuals and 13 businesses in a fund-raising campaign to build the college. On July 4, 1871, thousands of area citizens turned out to Owitness the results of that initiative, joining in a great celebration as the cornerstone was laid for a single but impressive structure that constituted Buchtel College. Both a visionary and a pragmatist, Buchtel believed that the vigor of any city is closely tied to the proximity of a high quality institution of higher education. Decades of progress, both for the city and for the college he launched, have proven him right. Today, The University of Akron occupies a campus more than 30 times the size of the old college of the 1800s. With an enrollment of 24,500 stu dents from throughout Ohio, the United States, and 77 foreign countries, the successor of Buchtel College is one of the largest principal campuses in Ohio. Long committed to an aca dem ic tradition which stresses excellence, The University of Akron offers more than 300 associate, baccalau reate, and master’s degree programs and options, as well as 17 doctoral degree programs and four law degrees. Since 1914, the University has been accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and it is currently classified at the highest level as a comprehensive, doctoral-degree-granting institution. Today, more than 136,000 of its alumni live and work around the world.
