  • From the Principal's Desk for Our LIHSA Families
Long Island High School for the Arts is a Nassau BOCES program From the Principal's Desk for our LIHSA Families April 9, 2021 April is Jazz Appreciation Month April is Jazz Appreciation Month. We are happy to share this year’s beautiful Smithsonian National Museum of American History official 2021 poster that features pianist, singer, songwriter, storyteller and civil rights activist Nina Simone. Born February 21, 1933, in Tryon, North Carolina, Simone became enamored with music at the early age of three when she learned to play the piano by ear. She went on to study classical repertoire and aspired to continue her education as a concert pianist at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, but that future did not come to pass. An audition in 1954 at the Midtown Bar & Grill in Atlantic City, New Jersey, was noted as a defining moment in her career that introduced her talents as a pianist and singer to an unsuspecting and enthusiastic audience. Some of her many recordings include her debut album, Little Girl Blue, on Bethlehem Records; the 1962 live recording Nina at the Village Gate; and 1964’s Nina in Concert, which famously addressed racial inequality. Simone received the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 2000 and was inducted posthumously into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. Her 1964 performance of “Mississippi Goddam” was selected as culturally and historically significant by the Library of Congress in 2018 and included for preservation on the National Recording Registry. • Fingal, Jen Thesis Final
HOW DO YOU SOLVE A PROBLEM LIKE THE AMERICAN MUSICAL: The Evolution of Musical Theater Producing from Oklahoma! to Rocky the Musical Jennifer Fingal Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts in the Theatre Arts Program of the School of the Arts Columbia University April 30, 2015 Fingal 1 Introduction The contemporary American musical is in a time of crisis. More and more, not-for-profit theaters such as American Repertory Theater in Cambridge and Second Stage Theater in New York, which were founded to produce non-commercial works, are filling their season with musicals based on high-profile movies like Finding Neverland and Little Miss Sunshine. It is far more likely to see a popular musician writing music for a well-known movie turned musical - for instance Sara Bareilles for Waitress which will premiere at A.R.T. August 2015 - than to see a new generation of musical theater writers creating the next Fiddler on the Roof or West Side Story. Out of all the musicals that have opened on Broadway since the 2011-2012 Broadway season, 33.5% have been revivals, 13% have been jukebox musicals of some sort, 33.5% have been based on a high profile movie, and a mere 20% have been based on original or lesser known material. Of that 20%, The Last Ship was written by Sting, and If/Then starred Idina Menzel. First Date, Bridges of Madison County, Chaplin, Hands on a Hardbody, Lysistrata Jones and Leap of Faith, though novel for being original works were not successful at the box office, and only two out of the six were critically acclaimed.

  • “Does Anybody Have a Map?”: the Impact of “Virtual Broadway” on Musical Theater Composition
“Does Anybody Have A Map?”: The Impact of “Virtual Broadway” on Musical Theater Composition CLARE CHANDLER , AND SIMEON SCHEUBER-RUSH N THEIR 2015 TEDX TALK, MUSICAL THEATER WRITERS BENJAMIN Pasek and Justin Paul identify a growing online culture within I musical theater, terming this space “Virtual Broadway.” This term refers to the virtual arena within which musical theater com- posers and audiences directly interact, necessitating explorations of how this democratization of the mediation process has impacted musical theater composition and consumption. In popular culture, “There are no longer subjective gatekeepers controlling who gets let ‘in,’ promoted and exposed. The choice is ours. Now, anyone can be famous” (Price). This transformation is evident in musical theater, where an upsurge in “YouTube musical theater composers” (Pasek and Paul) and social media engagement challenges the dominance of the book musical. Opportunities for self-promotion on the Internet are vast and allow composers to reach a more diverse audience. These emerging opportunities subsequently influence the form of produced works. With humans online having an average attention span of eight seconds (Microsoft Canada 6), this article considers how musical the- ater is evolving to meet the requirements of millennials and Gen Z.
