Analysis of journalism often focuses on the production of news across various platforms to understand the nature of politics and public debate in the contemporary era. But it is not possible, nor is it necessary, to analyse all emerging forms of journalism in the same way for they usually serve quite different purposes. Music journalism, for example, offers consumer guidance based on the creation and maintenance of a relationship between reader and writer. By focusing on the changing aspects of this relationship, an analysis of music journalism gives us an understanding of the changing nature of media production, media texts and media readerships. Music journalism is dialogue. It is a dialogue produced within particular critical frameworks that speak to different readers of the music press in different ways. These frameworks are continually evolving and reflect the broader social trajectory in which music journalism operates. Importantly, the evolving nature of music journalism reveals much about the changing consumption of popular music. Different types of consumers respond to different types of guidance that employ a variety of critical approaches. -

British Naturism Written Evidence
Written evidence submitted by British Naturism [MISS0067] British Naturism written evidence Executive summary 1. Little or no progress has been made in improving body image over the past decade indicating that a radical rethink is necessary; 2. There is substantial evidence that a more relaxed attitude towards the body would result in significant improvements and there is no evidence of any deleterious effects; 3. Policy is not going to work unless firmly evidence-based and that must take precedence over fear of causing offence; 4. Significant improvements are possible at little or no cost. British Naturism 5. Naturism is everyday life without any requirement for clothing. There are many motivations for practising Naturism including freedom, convenience, comfort, health, and belief.1 6. British Naturism (BN) is the internationally recognised UK national naturist organisation. We exist to unite and support naturists, to protect, and provide more naturist venues, to make social nudity acceptable in the UK and to provide comprehensive information on naturism and naturists around the world. We have over 9000 active members and represent over 4 million naturists nationwide. BN is a member of the International Naturist Federation which covers 37 countries worldwide. 7. We have been working on body image and body knowledge related issues for at least twenty years. 8. We are grateful to the Committee for accepting a late submission from us. Overview 9. The seriousness of the poor body image problem is now better appreciated than it was, but comparisons with past government reports2 show that disturbingly little progress, if any, has been made. It is unlikely that continuing with the same strategies will produce the significant improvements necessary, and a radical rethink is required. -

Channel 4 response to Ofcom’s consultation on ‘Protecting participants in TV and radio programmes’ Executive Summary • Channel 4 considers that treating contributors to programmes with due care is of paramount importance, separate to and including our responsibilities under the Ofcom Broadcasting Code (“the Code”).1 • Contributor care has for many years been, and continues to remain, a central priority for us. Working with our production partners we develop comprehensive, proactive and robust welfare protocols and processes which are regularly reviewed and updated. • We take a bespoke approach to contributor care, with the type of support given tailored to the individual nature of each situation. In our experience, what constitutes the proper exercise of our duty of care in each programme depends very much on the nature of the programme, and a ‘one size fits all’ or standard template approach is not appropriate. • As such, we welcome Ofcom’s recognition that “different types of participation may raise very different risks of harm to participants.” And that any proposed new rules “need to be flexible enough to work in a range of situations, and to take account of the fact that very different types and levels of care may be necessary.” • Channel 4 recognises that Ofcom, as the broadcast regulator, has an important role to play in ensuring consistent standards in contributor care across the industry and we believe our current approach is aligned with what Ofcom is seeking to deliver • Whilst we agree that it is vital that Ofcom should be able to provide guidance to the industry and to deal effectively with complaints by viewers and contributors, it must do so within the parameters of the authority granted to it by Parliament and with due regard to other rights and duties including the right to freedom of expression as expressed in Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights. -

Listening communities and globalising trends in the ownership and production of local radio 1 GUY STARKEY University of Sunderland [email protected] Abstract: This paper considers the trend in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in the world for locally- owned, locally-originated and locally-accountable commercial radio stations to fall into the hands of national and even international media groups that disadvantage the communities from which they seek to profit, by removing from them a means of cultural expression. In essence, localness in local radio is an endangered species, even though it is a relatively recent phenomenon. Lighter- touch regulation also means increasing automation, so live presentation is under threat, too. By tracing the early development of local radio through ideologically-charged debates around public-service broadcasting and the fitness of the private sector to exploit scarce resources, to present-day digital environments in which traditional rationales for regulation on ownership and content have become increasingly challenged, the paper also speculates on future developments in local radio. The paper situates developments in the radio industry within wider contexts in the rapidly-evolving, post-McLuhan mediatised world of the twenty-first century. It draws on research carried out between July 2009 and January 2011for the new book, Local Radio, Going Global, published in December 2011 by Palgrave Macmillan. Radiofrequency Use and Management: Impacts From the World Administrative Radio Conference of 1979 January 1982 NTIS order #PB82-177536 Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 82-600502 For sale by the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402 Foreword This study responds to a request from the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation to evaluate the impacts on the United States of key decisions taken at the general World Administrative Radio Conference (WARC-79) and to consider options for preparation and participation in future international telecommunication conferences. It reflects congressional concern for the adequacy of existing machinery and procedures for U.S. policymaking and preparation for such conferences. WARC-79 and related international conferences and meetings demonstrate that contention for access to the radio spectrum and its important collateral ele- ment, the geostationary orbit for communication satellites, presents new and urgent challenges to vital U.S. national interests. The growing differences among nations over the use of the radio spectrum and related satellite orbit ca- pacity are reflected in the Final Acts of WARC-79 which will be submitted to the U.S. Senate in January 1982, for advice and consent to ratification. Given the complexities of spectrum management in a changing world envi- ronment and the increased importance of telecommunications to both developed and developing nations, it is unlikely that traditional U.S. approaches to these issues will be sufficient to protect vital U.S. interests in the future. Problems re- quire strategies not yet developed or tested. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering Achieving the vision of ubiquitous connectivity requires addressing multiple challenges across low-power wireless communication, network protocols and sensing. This thesis presents four tech- nologies that address some of the challenges in achieving ubiquitous connectivity. First, the thesis describes an ultra-low-power high-definition video streaming system that enables video stream- ing from a low-power, wearable camera to a nearby mobile device. Second, we present LoRa backscatter that enables the first wide-area backscatter communication system to achieve long- range low-power cheap wireless communication at tens of microwatts of power. Third, we build NetScatter, the first wireless protocol that can scale to hundreds and thousands of concurrent trans- missions from backscatter devices. Finally, we describe TinySDR platform, a standalone, fully programmable low power software-defined radio solution that can be duty cycled for battery op- eration like a real low-power sensor endpoint, and more importantly, can be programmed over the air to allow for large scale deployment.
