Manu Bhaker won a gold medal while Ravi Kumar won a bronze in the ISSF World Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico. ONGC Videsh Ltd, Oil India Ltd and their partners have received the Mozambique government’s nod for bringing to production a giant gas field in the prolific Rovuma Area-1, off the coast of the African nation. Partners in the block plan to turn the gas into LNG for exports. The Area 1 block is estimated to hold recoverable gas resources of about 75 trillion cubic feet, more than the combined resource in all of the gas fields in India. The Golfino-Atum project will be Mozambique’s first onshore LNG development. The plan outlines the integrated development of the Golfinho-Atum field through an initial two-train onshore liquefaction (LNG) plant with a total processing capacity of 12.88 million tonnes per annum. The project will also supply initial volumes of about 100 million cubic feet of natural gas per day for domestic sales in Mozambique. ONGC Videsh Ltd, the overseas arm of state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp. (ONGC), holds 16% stake in the block while OIL has 4%.

National Peoples Party (NPP) President Conrad Sangma was administered the oath of office and secrecy as the new chief minister of Meghalaya. The Meghalaya Assembly election results 2018 threw up a fractured mandate, with the Congress emerging as the largest party. It was marginally ahead of its rival, the NPP. The NPP is an ally of the BJP at the Centre and in Manipur as well. The Congress, in power in the state for the past 10 years, won 21 out of 59 seats that went to the polls on February 27. The figure was 10 short of a simple majority. Meghalaya has a 60-member Assembly. Conrad Sangma has support from 34 MLAs — 19 of the NPP, six of the United Democratic Party (UDP), four of the People's Democratic Front (PDF), two each of the Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP), and the BJP and an Independent. The RBI announced that it had imposed a penalty of Rs 3 crore on Axis Bank for non-compliance with its directions on Income Recognition and Asset Classification (IRAC) norms back in fiscal 2016. In fact, the bank's annual report for 2016-17 revealed that the RBI had detected additional gross NPAs of 156% compared to its reported numbers. Based on the inspection report and other relevant documents, the RBI issued a notice last November advising Axis Bank to show cause as to why penalty should not be imposed on it for non-compliance. However, Axis Bank is not the only bank to have been penalized by the RBI for divergences in NPA classification. Last October, Yes Bank was slapped with an Rs 6 crore fine for the same reason. Since then, big names like SBI and HDFC Bank have stepped forward with their divergence disclosures. In a separate statement, the RBI announced that it had also imposed a Rs 2 crore penalty on the state-owned Indian Overseas Bank for non-compliance with the Know Your Customer (KYC) norms. Last year, the central bank had levied a Rs 5 crore penalty on Syndicate Bank and Rs 2 crore on Union Bank of India for the same reason. AIRTEL PAYMENTS BANK FINED RS 5 CRORE BY RBI FOR VIOLATING KYC NORMS.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a fine of Rs 5 crore on Sunil Mittal-owned Airtel Payments Bank for flouting Know Your Customer (KYC) norms and operating guidelines. Bharti Airtel has been using Aadhaar-based eKYC SIM verification process to open new accounts with its Airtel Payments Bank with the consent of its users. More than 23 lakh Airtel subscribers had reportedly received as many as Rs 47 crore in their payments bank accounts which were opened without their knowledge. Based on complaints and media reports, the central bank had conducted a supervisory visit to the bank from November 20 to 22 last year. Based on these findings, the central bank had issued a notice to Airtel Payments Bank seeking an explanation as to why a penalty should not be imposed for non-compliance with guidelines and directions issued by the RBI. This penalty has been imposed in exercise of powers vested in RBI under the provisions of Section 47A(1)(c) read with Section 46(4)(i) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, taking into account failure of the bank to adhere to the aforesaid guidelines/directions issued by RBI. The RBI clarified that the action was based on deficiencies in regulatory compliance and was not intended to pronounce upon the validity of any transaction or agreement entered into by the bank with its customers. The RBI had imposed fines to the tune of Rs 40 lakh on the biggest state-owned lender, State Bank of India for failing to comply with the central bank's regulations related to detection and reporting of counterfeit notes. The RB had also slapped a penalty of Rs 3 crore and on Axis Bank for not classifying non-performing assets (NPA), and Rs 2 crore on Indian Overseas Bank for violating KYC norms, earlier this week.

TWITTER INC. APPOINTS IIT BOMBAY ALUMNUS PARAG AGRAWAL AS CTO.

The microblogging site Twitter has appointed Parag Agrawal as its CTO. He will be leading technical strategy for the company and will focus on AI/ML across Twitter’s infrastructure and product teams. His bio on the website states that he joined Twitter in 2011 as an Ads Engineer, and under him, Twitter’s Ads systems have scaled up. He has also helped build and deploy a platform for online machine learning at Twitter. Parag is an IIT Bombay alumnus and holds a PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University. Before he joined Twitter, he conducted research in large-scale data management at other major companies such as Yahoo! Research, AT&T Labs, and Microsoft Research. Parag succeeds Adam Messinger, who was with the company for five years before leaving in December 2016. Around the same time, Josh McFarland, the VP of Product at Twitter, also moved to Greylock Partners. A month before these two moved out in 2016, COO Adam Bain left the company and Anthony Noto took over from him. A species of a bacterium that produces antibiotic has been discovered by a professor in the University of (UoH) and his researchers. The new bacteria would also clean up ammonia waste, a growing environmental concern. The bacterium was discovered by Venkata Ramana, Professor and Head, Department of Plant Sciences, School of Life Sciences, UoH and his researchers, it said. Scientists have been striving hard to find drugs to overcome the challenge of antimicrobial resistance in the wake of disease-causing germs failing to respond to even the most potent antibiotics, it said. The discovery was published in the latest issue of the scientific publication, `Journal of Antibiotics. The bacteria are called as "Anamox (Anaerobic ammonia oxidising) bacteria. The senior professor said he and his team have been working to identify the chemical nature of the antibiotic and the spectrum of antibiotic. The team included researchers from Bacterial Discovery Laboratory, Centre for Environment, Institute of Science and Technology, JNTU (Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University), Hyderabad and UoH. Pyarelal Wadali, the one half of famous Punjabi Sufi singing duo Wadali Brothers, died of heart attack. He was 75. Wadali with his elder brother Puran Chand Wadali sang popular hits such as 'Tu maane yaa na maane' and Tanu Weds Manu's 'Rangrez mere'. The singer is survived by wife, two sons and three daughters. Wadali was honoured with several state and national level awards along with his elder brother.

ASSOCIATION OF DEMOCRATIC REFORMS (ADR)REPORT.

Samajwadi Party, AIADMK, All India Forward Bloc and the Shiv Sena are the only major regional parties that show a steady increase in their annual declared assets. The total assets of AIADMK between financial year 2011-12 and 2015-16 increased by 155% (Rs 88 crore to Rs 225 crore) while that of Shiv Sena increased from about Rs 21 crore to over Rs 39 crore (92%). The figures were released by transparency watchdog Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) in its analysis of the report on assets and liabilities filed by the parties to the Election Commission of India. The report by ADR was accompanied by another report on the trend of NOTA in the past five years since its introduction in 2013. It found that NOTA has secured the highest percentage of votes in Naxalite-affected constituencies of Chhattisgarh. It also found that in the last five years, NOTA has secured 1.3 crore votes in state assemblies and Lok Sabha elections combined. During this period, on an average NOTA secured 2.7 lakh votes in the state assembly elections. ADR’s report on assets and liabilities found that during FY 2011-12, the declared asset of SP was Rs 213 crore which increased by 198% to Rs 635 crore during FY 2015-16. The ADR report says that while YSR Congress was registered in March, 2011 and AAP in November, 2012, the average assets declared by the these two parties during FY 2012-13 was just over Rs 1 crore which increased to Rs 3.7 crore during FY- 2015-16.
