SPECIES GROWING NATURALLY IN AND ∗ AROUND ESKISEHIR İsmühan POTOĞLU ERKARA, Süleyman TOKUR Osmangazi Üniversitesi Fen Edebiyat Fakültesi Biyoloji Bölümü 26480 Eskişehir, e-mail: [email protected] Received : 14.11.2003 Accepted : 07.04.2004 Abstract: The purpose of the present study is to determine some morphological and anatomical characteristics of the species of Hypericum montbretii Spach., H. origanifolium Willd. and H. perforatum L. that show natural distribution in Eskişehir and its surrounding area. H. perforatum was determined to exist more abundantly in the research area in comparison with H. montbretii and H. origanifolium. While H. montbretii and H. origani- folium have black glands, H. perforatum lack such glands. Upon the examination of the root cross-rections, the pith was determined to be completely covered by xylem cells. As to stem cross-sections, it was observed that large parenchymatic cells were present in the pith of the young stems, while old stems were observed to have formed cavity in their pith. The species examined were determined to bear resemblance to one another in con- sideration of their leaf anatomy. Leaves are equifacial and amphistomatic and they have amaryllis type stomata. They are mesomorphic and there are schizo-lisigenous type secretion pockets in the leaves. Compared to adja- cent cells,stomata are anisositic or diasitic. Stomata on the lower surface of the leaves show higher frequencies than those on the upper surface.

Abstract Peroxides are an interesting group among biological active natural compounds. These metabolites contain a peroxide group (-O-O-) in which each oxygen atom is bonded to the other oxygen and to another atom. β-Oxygen in hydroperoxide group is considered as more active. Present review describes research on more than 230 natural peroxides isolated from plants, algae, and fungi. Intensive searches for new classes of biologically active metabolites produced by terrestrial and marine origin have resulted in the discovery of dozens of compounds possessing high antimalarial, antibacterial, cytotoxic, and other pharmacological activities as an important source of leads for drug discovery.

However, recent investigations highlighted that this species could be advantageous for the cure of other pathological situations, such as trigeminal neuralgia, as well as in the treatment of cancer. This review focuses on the in vitro and in vivo antitumor effects of St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum), its derivatives, and other Hypericum species in hematologic malignancies.

Naturforsch. 64 c, 476 – 482 (2009); received February 25/March 26, 2009 Within the framework of our continuous efforts to explore Hypericum species from Jor- dan, we report the analysis of the major active metabolites, naphthodianthrones and phloro- glucinols, in the methanolic extracts of two under-explored Hypericum species; H. empetri- folium Willd. and H. sinaicum Hochst. & Steud. ex Boiss., using LC-(+,–)-ESI-MS (TIC and SIM) and LC-UV/Vis spectroscopy. Based on their LC-UV/Vis profi les, retention times and (+,–)-ESI-MS (TIC and SIM) spectral data, hypericin, protohypericin and pseudohypericin were identifi ed in both of the investigated species. In addition adhyperfi rin was only de- tected in H. empetrifolium, while hyperforin and protopseudohypericin were only detected in H. sinaicum. This is the fi rst report documenting the presence of hypericin, protohypericin, pseudohypericin, protopseudohypericin, and hyperforin in H. sinaicum, and adhyperfi rin in H. empetrifolium. The enormous amount of information already generated on this subject provides a rich field for data-miners as it is conceivable, with suitable computational techniques, to predict the antioxidant capacity of any essential oil just by knowing its particular chemical composition. To accomplish this task we here report on the design, training and validation of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) able to predict the antioxidant activity of EOs of known chemical composition.Methods A multilayer ANN with 30 input neurons, 42 in hidden layers (20 --> 15 --> 7) and one neuron in the output layer was developed and run using Fast Artificial Neural Network software. The chemical composition of 32 EOs and their antioxidant activity in the DPPH and linoleic acid models were extracted from the scientific literature and used as input values. From the initial set of around 80 compounds present in these EOs, only 30 compounds with relevant antioxidant capacity were selected to avoid excessive complexity of the neural network and minimise the associated structural problems.Results and discussion The ANN could predict the antioxidant capacities of essential oils of known chemical composition in both the DPPH and linoleic acid assays with an average error of only 3.16% and 1.46%, respectively.

Considering the importance of S. Petrović’s work for the botanical science of the 19th century, his herbarium has an important position from both a scientific and a museological standpoint. This herbarium collection has been conserved and inventoried. It was determined that it includes 648 herbarium sheet covers with 629 plant species, and the average age of the museum specimens is around 130 years. Key words: Sava Petrović, Herbarium, Natural History Museum, Belgrade INTRODUCTION The General Herbarium of the Balkan Peninsula at the Natural History Museum in Belgrade (BEO) includes collections of mosses, fungi, lichens and higher plants. The largest collection is the Collection of Higher Plants, 68 JOVANOVIĆ, M.: HERBARIUM COLLECTION BY SAVA PETROVIĆ with over 160,000 herbarium sheet covers and more than 500,000 specimens distributed in 2210 herbarium boxes. In addition to the “A collection” of type material from the treasury of herbarium at the Natural History Museum, the oldest collections prepared by the pioneers of Serbian botany, Dr Josif Pančić and Dr Sava Petrović, must also be mentioned.
