Ils sont allés dans les endroits où le Père a vécu, travaillé, souffert et… prié. Devoir de mémoire certes; mais qui concerne aussi son œuvre théologique publiée après sa mort et qui a connu un succès considérable. Après Lille, Hastings et le présent périple, les pèlerins continuèrent à Rome, puis à New York, enfin à Verdun (les 4 et 5 novembre 2006) où, pendant la bataille, son courage, son mépris du danger lui valurent les plus hautes distinctions décernées par l'autorité militaire. Si la mort n'avait pas voulu de l'aumônier – brancardier durant la première guerre mondiale, elle vint le prendre le jour de Pâques de l'an 1955 – le 10 avril. Pierre MARTY 1892 – Collège Jésuite de Mongie 5 Pierre Teilhard de Chardin PROLEGOMENES Pierre Teilhard propose sa théologie à un moment précis de l'his - toire de l'humanité. L'homme, sur lequel il se penche, est l'héritier de la spéculation grecque, puis romaine, cette dernière participant grandement à la victoire du christianisme. On se rappelle de la distance que les Hellènes mettaient entre eux et les barbares considérés comme des gens de deuxième catégorie, pour eux objet d'amusement plutôt que de science, avant tout réfractaires à la beauté et à l'ordre qui représentaient toute leur organisation issue de So - crate, Platon, Aristote, de là un effort pour conquérir les hommes à l'église “unique”, esprit de prosélytisme, inconnu à cette époque qui ne s'était jamais préoccupé de savoir ce qu'il devait aux civilisations an - ciennes de l'Égypte et de l'Orient. y t r a M e r r e i P o t o h P L’ancien au milieu de la modernité. (Photo prise sur le toit de l’observatoire impérial à Pékin) 6 Pierre Teilhard de Chardin Quand, de loin en loin, une initiative apparaît, elle est dénoncée et poursuivie comme subversive, constituant une menace pour la conscience mutuelle commune, provoquant une répression acharnée, car toute novation ne produit pas que des effets isolés, elle implique tout un ensemble de transformations économiques, politiques, religieuses et même intellectuelles. C'est dans ces moments que Teilhard apparut : il allait donc repré - senter un danger potentiel, car, osons le mot, c'était un révolutionnaire. 7 Pierre Teilhard de Chardin Curriculum Vitae Le père : à été l'historien de la ville de Clermont-Ferrand, passionné d'histoire naturelle, collectionne coléoptères et papillons, la collection serait encore visible dans un musée. La mère : très pieuse, petite nièce de Voltaire. 1er mai 1881 : naissance en Auvergne, toujours premier de sa classe. 1901 : Sa carrière de Jésuite est décidée, mais contrariée par les lois de la République : il doit commencer à Jersey… c'est toujours bon pour la seconde langue qu'il possèdera à la perfection. 1905 : Diplômé en sciences naturelles, physique et chimie. Il enseigne en Égypte, mais toujours pour la même raison il doit continuer ses études en théologie dans le Sussex à Hastings en Grande Bretagne (1908-1912). C'est la GRANDE GUERRE 1914-1918. Noviciat, Aix en Provence, 1899-1900 8 Pierre Teilhard de Chardin A compter de 1916, il est au front caporal-infirmier- brancardier-aumônier à Verdun. 1920 : Il enseigne à Paris la géologie à l'Institut catholique. Appelé en renfort par le père Licent en Chine, en réalité il y restera plus de… 20 ans. Cet exil est néanmoins entrecoupé de voyages d'études : 1928 : Éthiopie avec H. de Montfreid 1931 : Expéditions diverses centre Asie 1932 : Croisière Jaune 1935 : Inde 1936 : Java 1937-1938 : Birmanie 1939-1945 : Il sauve les trésors du musée Licent et de l'homme de Pékin. 1946 : C'est fini, il ne retournera jamais en Chine. Il est promu officier de la Légion d'Honneur. 1950 : Élu à l'Académie des Sciences. 1951 : Afrique du Sud (en observateur). Au retour, il s'installe à New York (U.S.). 1952 : L'université de Berkeley lui montre son cyclotron. 1954 : Deux mois en France : il revient à la maison natale. 1955 : Le jour de Pâques (le 10 avril) il meurt subitement, en visite chez des amis et pendant tout ce temps, il écrit, il écrit, il écrit : “sans jamais céder à la sensiblerie ni à l'illusion naïve” G. Ordonneau, Président de la Fondation des Amis de TEILHARD. Pierre fut en Égypte de 1906 à 1908, en Chine de mai 1923 à 1946, en trois périodes : 1923-1928 : il fait de la géologie : étude des sols, des sédiments, stra - tigraphie, fossiles mammifères. 9 Pierre Teilhard de Chardin Résultat : il trouve des dents humaines dans les Ordos et le fossile de Earlyman de l'époque paléontologique (ter - tiaire et quaternaire). 1929-1940 : Conseiller et collaborateur de la Société Savante (Fon - dation Survey of China). Résultat : Soixante-dix mémoires ; dix monographies en géologie, paléontologie, paléo-anthropologie, civilisa - tion, préhistoire. 1941-1946 : Sur la géologie du quaternaire pendant la guerre et l'oc - cupation japonaise. Fondateur de la véritable paléonto - logie chinoise (surtout celle des mammifères). Résultat : dix volumes de philosophie et de l'évolution des êtres humains et dix volumes de paléontologie et d'archéologie publiés aux éditions du Seuil. Lire : Lettres de voyages (23-29), encore dans le commerce, Nouvelles lettres (33-39), épuisé, Le Phénomène Humain, publié après sa mort, en librairie. Il travaille vingt ans dans le nord de la Chine avec Emile Licent

    Teilhard’s China Years1 Kathleen Duffy, SSJ INTRODUCTION Jesuit paleontologist and geologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin was a world traveler and, as such, an avid and prolific letter writer. Staying in touch with family and friends, sharing his experiences of a new land, continuing to minister to those at home who were seeking spiritual guidance, and attempting to communicate his evolutionary ideas with those who could give him feedback while he was far from home—each of these tasks was so very important to him. Many of his letters have been preserved, translated, and edited—letters to his parents while teaching high school in Cairo Egypt,2 to his cousin Marguerite Teillard-Chambon while serving on the front lines in World War I,3 to Maurice Blondel through Auguste Valensin shortly after the war,4 to his friends Ida Treat, Rhoda de Terra, Lucile Swan, and Leontine Zanta,5 to Auguste Valensin, SJ, Msgr. Bruno de Solages, Henri de Lubac, SJ, and André Ravier, SJ,6 and during the last days of his life, to his good friend Pierre Leroy, SJ,7 among others. In these letters, Teilhard describes his experiences and shares his ideas and theories more informally than he does in his essays and so provides deeper insight into his approach to life, his strengths and weaknesses, his hopes and dreams. For this paper, I rely mainly on Teilhard’s letters collected in the volume, Letters from a Traveller,8 written during the years he spent in China. These letters, addressed to his cousin, Marguerite Teillard-Chambon, his friends, Max and Simone Bégouën, his colleague, Abbé Breuil, and his brothers, Joseph and Gabriel, and edited by his cousin, Marguerite, provide a window into the soul of a man far from home who, while living a full professional, spiritual, and social life, experienced major obstacles to the fulfillment of what he saw as a personal call from God.

Women have traveled the world for centuries with their families, husbands, and teachers; however it has only been within the last two hundred years or so that they began increasingly to travel alone. Motivated by the desire to escape family or social obligations; curiosity and hunger for adventure; or need to contribute to improving the human condition, especially for underprivileged women and children, women traversed the globe in various roles including artist, diplomat, explorer, humanitarian, scientist and writer. During the nineteenth century the growth of British and European imperialism, as well as the advent of rail and steamship transportation paved the way for expanded and safer travel. A primarily Western middle‐class phenomenon, travel was facilitated often by familial contacts with commercial or government officials at home and abroad.

Lefebure, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This study is a comparative analysis of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and Muhammad Iqbal focused on how the themes of consciousness and sociality are developed and interconnected in their respective worldviews. Research efforts sought the exposition of these themes throughout the oeuvres of both authors and in letters and journals, published and archival. Taking a short article by Eva de Vitray-Meyerovitch as inspiration, this study is the first sustained comparison of Iqbal and Teilhard de Chardin and the only sustained comparative study of Teilhard with any Muslim thinker. The scope of research in this project has also brought numerous primary and secondary sources within the respective orbit of each thinker into conversation for the first time and it marks the first published citation of previously unused or sealed archival resources held by Georgetown University. The analysis of consciousness in Teilhard and Iqbal has revealed (1) the importance of their shared inheritance from philosopher Henri Bergson (2) a shared commitment to the unity of consciousness and (3) a shared commitment to a particular kind of panpsychism within the context of panentheism.

It also insists on the inseparability of the non-Han nationalities as an integrated part of Zhonghua minzu. This dissertation traces the origin of this nationalism to the two major waves of scientific investigation in the fields of paleoanthropology and anthropology in the Chinese frontier during the first half of the twentieth century. Prevailing theories and discoveries in the two scientific disciplines inspired the ways in which the Chinese intellectuals constructed their national identity. The first wave concerns the international quest for human ancestors in North China and the northwestern frontier in the 1920s and 1930s.

    CHRISTIAN MORARU Global Romance? Nicole Mones, Teilhard de Chardin, and the Critique of "Planetization" Translation is the performative nature of cultural communication. It is language in actu (enunciation, positionality) rather than language in situ (enonce, or propositionality). (Bhabha 228) The answer is: let us wage a war on totality. (Lyotard 82) I. The Geopolitics of Desire Instantly risen to international fame, Marguerite Duras's 1984 "Oriental romance" L'Amant (The Lover) provides an inescapable framework for coming to grips with Nicole Mones's 1998 less popular "national bestseller" Last in Translation. The front cover advertises Mones's book as "A Novel," but the text fits the formal and psychological-cultural model of Duras's romance closely.1 Both are set in the Far East — The Lover, in Indochina, Last in Translation, in China — and feature the same kind of erotic plot. Duras's "lover" is Chinese, and so is Mones's, yet in neither case does he take center stage. The two stories' main focus is a young Western woman — French in Duras, American in Mones — who falls so deeply in love with native men that she is on the brink of "going native" herself. In fact, Duras's "Cholon lover" 1 I am indebted to my colleague Kelly Griffith for calling my attention to Nicole Mones's first novel, in particular to some of the subtleties of her intertextual conversation with Teilhard de Chardin. A set of more than 300 bound volumes of photographic prints, created about 1930, reproduce records up to the time of the suppression of the Society in 1773. The series recording activity in Japan, China, and the Far East is by far the most extensive, but all areas are documented in considerable detail. Access to these records is facilitated (though by no means made either easy, or convenient!) by a number of volumes of typewritten guides. The second group of records consists of more than 4,000 spools of negative microfilm, reproducing records from the Society’s beginning up to about 1945. These films must be cleaned, transferred onto reels, and given better indexing before they can be made available for research. Restricted. Deposited by the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus Printed Books The Special Collections Research Center holds, in its various collections, large numbers of the earliest Jesuit publications. Among the rarest of these are the 1586 and 1591 editions of the Ratio studiorum, the printed embodiment of the traditional Jesuit educational methodology. These copies were formerly owned by the noted English collector Sir Leicester Harmsworth, the gift of Homer Hervey, Paul Straske, and Mrs. S. R. Straske. These two rarities are now supported by a copy of the 1599 “official” first edition of the Ratio, acquired by the Woodstock Theological Center Library in 2005.

    BIBLIOGRAPHY ON THE HISTORY OF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS Paul Begheyn, S.J. Six years ago Father Laszl6 Polgar, SJ. (1920-2001) published his fiftieth annual bibliography for the AHSI. Unfortunately no immediate successor as bibliographer could be found, so that a huge reservoir of titles was beginning to fill up. At a meeting of the Historical Institute in Rome on 28 November 2005 its members discussed the possibilities of restarting the bibliography. Then and there I expressed my willingness to perform this task. This bibliography differs from the earlier ones in the following areas: 1. In general the bibliography will include mainly titles on history; titles on spirituality can be found in specialized journals like Manresa. 2. Only titles published from 2000 will be included. Pre-2000 titles overlooked in earlier issues, will not be included. 3. The bibliography will not give the full Christian names of the authors, only their initials. 4. The bibliography will not mention the series ofwhich certain publications are part. 5. The size of books will not be mentioned. 6. Titles in private Jesuit publications will not be included. 7. In each section titles will be presented in chronological order, and within each year in alphabetical order. 8. The use of capitals in titles of publications has been reduced. 9. Membership of a religious order or congregation of an author will not be mentioned. 10. In the section 'Persons' and in the index on authors prefixes like 'de', 'de la', 'van' and 'von der' will be put after the family name. This first bibliography in 'new style' includes only part of the titles already collected.
