Here Comes The Sun – The Beatles – Notes
Activity type: word association, predicting, expressing feelings.
Grammar: Present simple, present perfect .
Time: 20 mins.
Level: Lower Intermediate
Note: This song is ideal for discussing feelings and seasons as the summer begins. It was written by George Harrison, and recorded for the Beatles’ 1969 album Abbey Road.
1) Ask students how they feel when the sun is shining. The response will almost certainly be positive (“happy”/“good”). Ask them to complete the sentence “when the sun is shining everything is …….” to elicit the words “all right” (Note: this is often, more informally, written as one word – “alright”)
2) Write the following words on the board: winter face ice
Ask students to write five words they associate with each of these nouns. Any correct answer is acceptable.
3) Play the song. Students listen and check which (if any!) words from their list they hear. The relevant lines of the song are:
It's been a long cold lonely winter The smiles returning to the faces I feel that ice is slowly melting
You can also ask them to count the number of times they hear “It’s all right” (six times), or the word “sun” (this is more challenging – it appears twenty five times.)
4) Give each student a copy of the worksheet. Ask them to complete the lyrics before listening to the song again, based on their previous listening.
5) Play the song. Students check and complete. Play the song as often as necessary.
6) Allow them to check their answers with other students.
7) Correct, and sing together.
Further Grammar Practice:
The students make sentences using the present perfect and since following the model of the song to speak about their feelings about spring and other seasons.
