To aocommodatethe very large numbersof stamens(which are amongthe most numerousofany species in the subgenus)the torus is commonly enlargedand it sometimesis supportedon a distinct yet very short gynandrophore(e.g. A. pygmdea). Judging fiom Figures 2-4 in Robbefise(1974) the Atiican speciesof subgenusAculeiferum possesssome of the charactersdescribed here for membersof the " mlrtifoliq Group". Another seemingly unique feature for subgenusPhyllodineae is the multiple ovaries which are consistently found in A. celqst folia (very rarely A. durabilis at\d A. pygmaecthave2 ovariesin a few tlowers of the heads).

As discussedby Guinet er al. (1980)A. gilberlii Meissner, which is traditionally placedin section Pulchellae (Benth.) Taub. on accountof its bipinnate foliage, is closely relatedto A. myrtfolia and A. celastrilblia. Acacia urophyllaBenth. andA. scalpe iformisMeissner, which also have 4-merous flowers, arenot far removedfrom the Group eventhough they haveprominently 2-4-nerved phyllodes. Indeed, in the classificationproposed by Vassal (1972)A. myrtifuIia andA. urophyLlawerc included in the one inf'ragenericcategory, namely, section PuLchelloideasubsection Mqgniscutellqe (this subsectionalso included the phyllodinousspeciesA. exler.ta Lindley andA. willdenov,ianaH.L.Wendl. (syn. A. diptera Lindley) as well as three speoiesof section PuLcheLlae,A. drummondii Lindley, A. pentadenia Lrndley andA. pulchella R. Br .).

"A With the exceptionofA. myrtfolia itsell t}.emembers of the cacia mynifulirtCtroup"are confined to temperateand semi-aridareas of southwestWestern . Acqcia myrtifolla occursusually in coastaland near-coastalareas duoughout Australia except Northem Territory andthe AustralianCapital Territory.

Distribution. Widespreadand common in temperatesouthem Australia, occuning in all states.Grows on sandor sandover laterite or granite,in forcst, woodland, scrubor heath, often in coastaland near- coastalareas.

FLotveringand fruiting periods. Flower buds have been recordedfrom May to November however the main flush of flowering is from August to October. Developingpods arepresent from September and reach maturation in November and December.

Vqridtiotl. In WesternAustralia this is a somewhatvariable species and is herebroadly cit'cumscribed becausedetailed analyses of variationpatterns arc neededto asce ain appropriateranks for the variants notedbelow. Specimensfrom fbrest regionsat the westernend of the range(roughly west of Albany; alsosome specimens fiom KangarooIsland, ) have long, linear to vely narrowlyelliptic phyllodeswith lengthto widthratio mostly >10 (elsewherelength to width ratiois <10). This variant has been describedas A. merginatd, A. tnyrtiJolia var. anSustifoliaand A. acutifulia (seebelow). A specimenwith especiallylarge phyllodes (to 13x 3.5cm), collected from CapeRiche (i.e. K Nerrbel 4466, PERTH), presurnablycoresponds to the entity describedas A. m1'rtifuliavar. ,14ior (however, the type ofthis namehas not beenseen). The most inland specimensin WesternAustralia havebright lenon yellow heads(e.g. B.R. Maslin 51657 but elsewherein WesternAustralia the headsare creamy yellow; in easternAustralia the heads are also sometimes bright lemon yellow.
