Many of these species were previously misunderstood or are listed as rare and endangered. The Huntingfield area has a varied vegetation, including substantial areas ofEucalyptus amygdalina heathy woodland, heath, buttongrass moorland and E. amygdalina shrubbyforest, with smaller areas ofwetland, grassland and E. ovata shrubbyforest. Six floristic communities are described for the area. Two hundred and one native vascular plant taxa, 26 moss species and ten liverworts are known from the area, which is particularly rich in orchids, two ofwhich are rare in Tasmania. Four other plant species are known to be rare and/or unreserved inTasmania. Sixty-four exotic plantspecies have been observed in the area, most ofwhich do not threaten the native biodiversity. However, a group offire-adapted shrubs are potentially serious invaders. Management problems in the area include the maintenance ofopen areas, weed invasion, pathogen invasion, introduced animals, fire, mechanised recreation, drainage from houses and roads, rubbish dumping and the gathering offirewood, sand and plants. Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. ACorresponding author; email: [email protected] Abstract: The resprouting response of plant species to fire is a key life history trait that has profound effects on post-fire population dynamics and community composition. This study documents the post-fire response (resprouting and maturation times) of woody species in six contrasting formations in the New England Tableland Bioregion of eastern Australia. Rainforest had the highest proportion of resprouting woody taxa and rocky outcrops had the lowest. Surprisingly, no significant difference in the median maturation length was found among habitats, but the communities varied in the range of maturation times. Within these communities, seedlings of species killed by fire, mature faster than seedlings of species that resprout. The slowest maturing species were those that have canopy held seed banks and were killed by fire, and these were used as indicator species to examine fire immaturity risk. Finally, we examine whether current fire management immaturity thresholds appear to be appropriate for these communities and find they need to be amended. A BOTANICAL SURVEY ALONG THE SOUTH ESK MAIN ROAD: STYNES BRIDGE TO THE ST. PAULS BRIDGE AT AVOCA A REPORT TO THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT AND WORKS: TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE DIVISION MICHAEL ASKEY-DORAN JUNE 1993 . III~008717589 1~111111"III~mlll"II' BACKGROUND A botanical survey was carried out along the Esk Main Road between Stynes Creek Bridge and the St. Pauls River Bridge for the Department of Transport and Works: Transport Infrastructure Division. This section represents a distance of 3.97 km. AIMS The aim of this botanical survey was to provide an inventory of the plant species and communities occurring along this section of the Esk Main Road. An assessment of the conservation status and significance of those plant species and communities for both the roadside and adjacent land is made. Areas of high conservation value are identified and where necessary, suggestions on measures needed to ensure they are not adversely affected are made. Any ameliorative measures to encourage regrowth of native vegetation are considered. STUDY AREA The study area extends along a relatively flat section of road which dips at Jubilee lagoon and again at Stynes Creek at its western end. Vegetation in this area has largely been cleared leaving only a few, even aged eucalypts (Eucalyptus pauciflora and E. ovata) remaining. Regeneration of these species appears to be confined to the roadside verge. The broad flats have been largely converted to pasture which are used predominantly for grazing. The geology is variable, with alluvium of dominantly quartzose granule to cobble sized clasts predominating from just before the St. -

Hibbertia Vestita
Plant of the Month - July by Allan Carr Hibbertia vestita Hairy Guinea Flower Pronunciation: hib-ER-sha ves-TEET-a DILLENIACEAE Derivation: Hibbertia, after George Hibbert, 1757-1837 English merchant, politician, slave owner, ship owner and botany patron; vestita, from the Latin, vestire – to clothe, (a reference to the hairy leaves and branchlets). Flower Hairy leaves Flower plus native bee Hibbertia is a large genus of more than 150 species, the majority of them being endemic in Australia, particularly in WA where about 68 species are found. Most species are found among the low shrubs of heathlands and sandplain vegetation and a significant proportion also grow in open forest and woodland. Overseas they are also found in New Guinea, New Caledonia, Fiji and Madagascar. Description: H. vestita is a shrub to 30 cm with erect, sprawling or prostrate branchlets and stems usually minutely hairy. This species is very prominent in coastal heath as a sprawling prostrate plant but is also found as a low erect shrub in forested habitats further inland and is fire tolerant sprouting again after such an event. It occurs from about Rockhampton in Qld south to Wyong in NSW. Leaves to 7 mm by 2 mm are linear, alternate and minutely hairy with *recurved edges and a blunt end. They are dark green above and paler below. Flowers to 25 mm across are yellow with 5 bi-lobed petals (photo on left above). At any time of the year but mostly from June to November these are borne in small clusters on the ends of the branchlets.
