Ronald N. Beshara Page 2 of 27 OUR PAST ... Maronite history has its origins in Antioch where the early Christians received their faith from Saint Peter after he fled persecutions in Jerusalem. According to Acts 11:26 the followers of Christ were called Christians for the first time in Antioch. The seat of the Church remained there for 7 years before being transferred to Rome. Prior to 741 there were 7 Syro-Catholic Popes, 5 of them were Syro-Maronites. Antioch was a Hellenistic city while Edessa to the Northeast maintained a Syriac-Aramaic culture followed by the Christians who later were to be called Maronite. Their tradition followed the language, theology and liturgy of Christ and His Apostles thus reflecting their mentality. After divisions and persecutions the Christians gradually migrated to the safety of the mountains in Lebanon. Thus the liturgical roots of the Maronite Church can be traced to Antioch and Edessa. In the 4th century Saint Maron, a friend of Saint John Chrysostom, fought the heresies that beset the Catholic Church at that time, particularly Arianism, Monophysitism and Nestorianism. His monastery became the principal center of pastoral and spiritual care for the area. The monks and followers, then called Maronites, were continually called upon and willing to sacrifice their lives for their religious convictions.

Saint Maron was a priest and a hermit; he lived in the fourth century in the mountain area of Antioch, which was one of the five major sees of early Christianity. Even though he sought a solitary ascetic life, his light of holiness could not be hidden, but it shone in that region and attracted to him a lot of people. After his death, those who embraced Christianity through his preaching and his example, and later through his disciples, became known as “Beit Maroun” / the “House of Maron” or Maronites; but they did not become a distinct Church until the year 685 AD when Saint John Maron was elected as the first Patriarch of Antioch for the Maronites. The identity of the Maronite Church is described by five distinguishing marks: -Maronites are Antiochene -where Christ’s followers were called Christians for the first time- (Acts 11:26) . -Maronites are heirs of Syriac cultural and religious heritage. -Maronites are Chalcedonian, meaning they were staunch supporters of the Council of Chalcedon, convened in 451 A.D., which taught that Jesus was true God and true man. -The Maronite Church is a Patriarchal and Monastic Church.

Just when we thought we could become comfortable with the way we lived our Christian life, he throws another curve ball1. First, he called us to be more mindful of the poor, the Prefugee, the imprisoned, and the needy. Now, we are asked to be more Christ-like, more simple, poor, and compassionate. Yes, we are in trouble. Just when we thought we were already all those things, now we are asked to go even further. This coming December, Pope Francis is prepared to announce a special holy year, a time of grace in which the faithful are asked to dedicate some time and effort towards the mentioned theme of the year. Why did he have to choose "mercy?" I, personally, was just getting used to being just and fair to all people, now I am asked to go far beyond this to be merciful? All of us are in trouble. It can no longer be "business as usual." In the upcoming Holy Year everything changes. Perhaps this is just what the world, or should I say, what all of us need: a dose in our lives of a little more mercy.     The Maronite Voice A Publication of the Maronite Eparchies in the USA Volume XII Issue No. VII July - August 2016 The Martyrs uly is the month of the Massabki Martyrs: three brave lay men, who gave their lives in Jdefense of their faith. But more than that, they were businessmen and family men who modeled their faith at home, way before they paid the ultimate price of martyrdom. When we think of the Massabki Brothers, and all those who have witnessed to Christ and paid the ultimate price, we think how faithful they must have been. But martyrdom is not only about those who have received their crown; it is also about us. What are we doing to deserve a similar crown? Are we also that "faithful witness," as was Jesus in the Book of Revelations, willing to die, and just as important, willing to live and witness to "Jesus Christ, and him crucified"? The Holy Father, Pope Francis, calls upon us to be Christ's witnesses, just as he asked us in this Jubilee Year to be Christ's mercy. He often reminds us that the integrity of our lives, that is, the "consistency" or "coherence," as he likes to say, must include all that we say, do, and live, as well as the way we die, as consistent with our faith in Christ. Just as mercy is consistent with the Gospel of Christ, so too our witness to him must be consistent with our personal lives. We cannot say we believe in Christ, and then live as though Christ matters little in how we spend time, money, or make choices.

Peace and Apostolic Blessing Introduction 1. The ministry of social charity reflects the nature of God. For He is “love” and rich “in mercy”1. This nature is the foremost attribute that takes precedence over administrative roles and responsibilities which look upon the ministry of social charity as a social sustenance. Hence, it becomes a spiritual energy and a fountain of altruism that never runs dry. This is what Saint Paul the Apostle wrote in his first letter to the Corinthians: “If I speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal.

  • Saint John Maron
    مار يوحنا مارون-- Saint John Maron St. John Maron’s feast Day is celebrated on March 2. John Maron was born in the seventh century and died around the year 707. He was a Syriac monk and a priest at the Monastery of Saint Maron in Syria. He added the name “Maron” to his own name. It is believed that he was ordained a bishop in 676, and was assigned to Mount Lebanon with a mission to keep the Maronites united in the true faith and to support the faithful in an area being invaded by the Arabs. When the Patriarchal See of Antioch became vacant due to the Arab expansion, John Maron was chosen as the new Patriarch of Antioch and all the East. It is said that he received the approval of Pope Sergius I, and became the first Maronite Patriarch of the oldest see in Christianity. The Byzantine Emperor, Justinian II, feared the growing power of the Maradite army, who were mostly Maronites, and was angered that his approval had not been sought for the appointment of John Maron as Patriarch of Antioch. The Emperor sent his army to defeat the Maradites, and they managed to win battles against them, overrun Antioch, and destroy the monastery there, killing approximately 500 monks in the process. It is believed that the Emperor’s army captured John Maron, but that he escaped to Lebanon, and Justinian's army was defeated there. John Maron then established the monastery of Reesh Moran (Head of Our Lord) in Kefar Hay, Lebanon, and moved his see to Mount Lebanon.

    The Maronite Catholic Church THE CATHOLIC CHURCH Before He suffered His passion and death, Jesus prayed that his followers would be known by their love (John 13:35). “See how they love one another,” the early Church Father, Tertullian, heard it said of the first Christians. Today, the Gospel of Christ has reached the four corners of the world. Christians went forth from Jerusalem and encountered different traditions, cultures, customs and languages and the Church became a communion of Churches united in love with each other, looking to the See of Peter in Rome as the first among them. Jesus also prayed for unity, “that they all may be one” (John 17:21). Today there are Catholic, Orthodox and Protestants who pray and work for this desired unity. However, for Catho- lics united with the Pope in Rome, there is already an amazing unity even within the reality of cultural diversity. The Catholic Church, comprised of 21 Eastern Churches and 1 Western Church, is a communion of Churches, with the Pope as the visi- ble head, “gathered in the one spirit, breathing as though with two lungs - of the east and of the west - and burning with the love of Christ in one heart - having two ventricles.” (Sacri Canones; Pope John Paul II) One of the Eastern Catholic Churches is the Maronite Church. She has her own hierarchy composed of a Patriarch who is her father and head, and over fifty Bishops who shepherd the many Eparchies (Dioceses) in Lebanon, the Middle East and throughout the world. The Patriarch governs the Church in a synodal manner with his body of bishops as is customary in Eastern Churches.
