The Evolution of a Campus (1756-2006)
CHAPTER 3 THE EVOLUTION OF A CAMPUS (1756-2006) Princeton University has always been a dynamic institution, evolving from a two-building college in a rural town to a thriving University at the heart of a busy multifaceted community. The campus changed dramatically in the last century with the introduction of iconic “collegiate gothic” architecture and significant postwar expansion. Although the campus exudes a sense of permanence and timelessness, it supports a living institution that must always grow in pace with new academic disciplines and changing student expectations. The Campus Plan anticipates an expansion of 2.1 million additional square feet over ten years, and proposes to achieve this growth while applying the Five Guiding Principles. 1906 view of Princeton University by Richard Rummel. University of Chicago Medicine Background “The University of Chicago Medicine (UChicago Medicine), with a history dating to 1927, is a not-for-profit academic medical health system based on the campus of the University of Chicago in Hyde Park, and with hospitals, outpatient clinics and physician practices throughout Chicago and its suburbs. UChicago Medicine unites five organizations to fulfill its tripartite mission of medical education, research and patient care: Pritzker School of Medicine, Biological Sciences Division, Medical Center, Community Health and Hospital Division, and UChicago Medicine Physicians.”1 Problem In July 2015, UChicago Medicine leaders sponsored a quality improvement initiative Vineet Arora, MD, MAAP to reduce overuse of proton pump inhibitors (PPI) infusion among patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) via the Choosing Wisely Challenge.2 While continuous infusion of PPIs is recommended in these patients for specific situations, such as before endoscopic identification of ulcers with high-risk features, many times PPI infusions may be continued for 72 hours without indication. Solution UChicago Medicine launched a Choosing Wisely challenge to crowdsource overuse reduction initiatives, successfully building infrastructure for more than 10 projects. The Choosing Wisely Challenge was a “trainee-led, institution- supported, interdisciplinary intervention based on the ‘Culture, Oversight, Systems Change, Training (COST) framework.’”3 “In 2014, as leaders, we worked on a plan to have front-line clinicians, including nurses and residents, submit ideas to improve value and reduce waste throughout UChicago Medicine. We titled this initiative the ‘Choosing Wisely Challenge,’ so that we could provide a tool and guide for people to initiate where to start,” said Vineet Arora, MD, MAPP, Associate Chief Medical Officer-Clinical Learning Environment. -

Large gaps exist in the Formative of the Lake Titicaca basin with regards to daily life and political interaction. It is most likely that a series of regional formative cultures flourished throughout the Titicaca Basin, not coalescing into one large polity, until after the fomrative is over. This is just beginning to be systematically investigated as are the economic and political changes beginning to be detailed to the degree where we can understand how the political developments occurred leading up to the Tiwanaku polity that spanned at least the whole Titicaca Basin. During the Formative times, we know that elaborate symbolic styles existed on pottery and carved monoliths (Yayamama style), suggesting regional elite-symbolic development that could have been linked to broad or local trade and communication networks, increasingly intensive local subsistence production, and/or specialized production of some other sort. With an interest in the local changes and social dynamics that accompanied these physical indications of change within the domestic settings, houses and work areas, we chose to begin our search for evidence of formative daily life and social change at Chiripa, a noteworthy site involved in this formative society. -

Joseph Henry’s House and Campus Plan Ezra Y. S. Tjung, Daniel Kaufmann, Michael G. Littman Abstract Joseph Henry is sometimes credited with the design of the Joseph Henry House, a registered National Historic Landmark on the Princeton University Campus. Joseph Henry was Professor of Natural Philosophy and Mathematics at Princeton College at the beginning of the 19th century. He also taught Architecture and Geology, and had worked earlier in the State of New York as a surveyor. We set out to verify that Joseph Henry was responsible for the design of the House that bears his name, and found to our surprise that it is unlikely that he designed it. Our conclusion is based on a review of many financial documents and other records of the College, published and unpublished papers and letters of Joseph Henry, and a diary of a key member of the College Building Committee. We have established that Ezekial Howell, a local mason, was the principal builder of the House. We have also determined that Charles Steadman, a local carpenter and builder, was responsible for drawings of the House. While it is possible that Steadman as draftsman was following Henry’s specifications, we find that this is unlikely given that the House constructed in 1838 is so similar to many others built by Steadman in the Princeton area. Prof. Henry did make his own drawing of a house and submitted it to the Building Committee, but his design is not at all like the design of the house that was built. That withstanding, Joseph Henry did select the location of the House as well as that of several other early buildings as part of his influential Campus Plan.
