The Bibles were produced by the Apollo Prayer League, a group started by NASA employees and spread globally with the idea of using man’s first trip to the moon to carry the words of God, the auction house said. Apollo 13 commander Jim Lovell carried 512 of the stamp-sized Bibles on the 1970 mission that was supposed to land on the moon but did not after an oxygen tank explosion in flight severely damaged the spacecraft. Most of those bibles were cut into pieces and distributed to dignitaries over the years. Twelve of those that remained passed from John Stout of the Prayer League to astronaut Mitchell. One of the bibles is on display through June 22 at the Vatican, where it is a marquee arti- fact along with three fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls, according to a news release from Vatican Radio. PLAY BALL! SPORTS AS PARADIGMS OF MASUCLINE PERFORMANCE IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY UNITED STATES by GEOFFREY AARON DOUGLAS (Under the Direction of DAVID SALTZ) ABSTRACT This study examines the culture of baseball and football as paradigms for masculine performativity. The goal is to establish a new way to examine the construction of masculine behavior in United State popular culture. After establishing how both baseball and football present distinct performative images of masculinity, a materialist reading of plays and films representing both sports will reveal how images of gender identity extend into the United States’ popular culture. 12 Aseem in New York INDIA IN NEW YORK MAY 16, 2014 Talking with titans ou watch Mad Men , the trailer of the film Million Dollar Arm – which has been on television for quite sometime – Ywill hit you big time. Yes, Disney somehow expects the fans of Don Draper – Mad Men ’s conflicted man with a serious sex addiction problem — to throng theaters to catch him in a differ - ent avatar in the film. Jon Hamm – Mad Men ’s Don Draper – is the lead character in Million Dollar Arm , playing the role of a sports agent who sets out to look for baseball pitchers in India. The film is based on the true story of two former cricket bowlers who learned to pitch for baseball and were finally picked by the Pittsburgh Pirates. I saw the film at a press screening, and it opens in the United States May 16, a week after its opening in India. It is a feel-good movie, and works through all the right notes and formulae that one expects from a Disney film. But it is also so underwhelming, suffering from a heavy Slumdog Millionaire hangover. A R Rahman tries to recreate his musical magic, but almost always ends up imitating the loud souring score of Danny Boyle’s 2008 Oscar winner. At one point, when the song Ringa Ringa starts to play, the Slumdog obsession is way too obvious. The three main Indian actors – Pitobash Tripathy, Suraj Sharma (from Life Of Pi ) and Madhur Mittal (who played the older broth - er in Slumdog ) — are likable and charming.

Transitions, Tribulations & Triumphs Third Annual Conference South Asian Studies Association University of Central Florida Fairwinds Alumni Center Orlando, Florida April 3-5, 2009 Distinguished Achievement Honorees Anil Deshpande Harold A. Gould Plenary Session Speakers Vivek Wadhwa Ambassador Arun K. Singh Laurie L. Patton Featured Guests Arun Sharma David Verquist Rinku Singh Dinesh Patel A Warm Sunshine State Welcome SASA. Two years age we met as the South Asian Studies Alliance, SASA, a project of Asian Studies on the Pacific Coast (ASPAC). For years ASPAC saw declining South Asian participation at Asian Studies conferences all around the country. This made no sense so ASPAC decided to test the waters by organizing a South Asia specific conference. Overnight we became the second largest gathering of South Asianists in the U.S. Effective October 18, 2007 we became the South Asian Studies Association, a California non-profit, public benefit corporation. A couple months later the IRS granted us 501(c3) tax exempt status retroactive to the date of incorporation. SASA III. SASA II saw a 25% growth over SASA I, an extraordinary achievement in a period of shrinking budgets and overall declining conference attendance. Over the last several months, with the American economy in turmoil, conferences of all kinds have been severely hammered, SASA included. Yet, we continue to thrive. We are grateful to the University of Central Florida for their generous support and provision of space. SASA IV. Next year we will meet in the heart of Silicon Valley, Santa Clarita, California. As a 100% all volunteer organization we encourage you to join us in pulling together to make SASA IV another success.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Sporting Bodies, Displaying History: Black Embodiment and Performance in Contemporary Sports Films A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television by Samantha Noelle Sheppard 2014 © Copyright by Samantha Noelle Sheppard 2014 ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Sporting Bodies, Displaying History: Black Embodiment and Performance in Contemporary Sports Films by Samantha Noelle Sheppard Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television University of California, Los Angeles, 2014 Professor Kathleen McHugh, Co-Chair Professor Allyson Nadia Field, Co-Chair In this dissertation I analyze Black embodiment and performance in contemporary sports films, particularly through their documentary impulse, the gestures and markers through which these films establish their reference to real sporting and non-sporting bodies and histories. I argue that through this impulse, sports films make claims to an historical real, and they can therefore be explored for how they represent the Black sporting body. Though my project focuses primarily on fiction films, I begin by analyzing this impulse in a sports documentary for how it represents the performance and embodiment of the Black sporting body as an historical contestant. I then trace these strategies as they appear in and shape sports in fiction films, ii specifically through narratives of triumph and defeat, dissent, and gendered visibility. Throughout, I focus on and read the Black sporting body as a an individuated multiplicity which, through performance and embodiment, represents, references, and relates to Black sporting and non-sporting embodied histories and experiences. Sports films offer a privileged viewpoint on Black embodiment because of their high concentration of Black actors, one that mirrors representation in contemporary athletics.
