IMMIGRATION Virginia’s Republican delegates passed two bills in 2017 that are hostile to immigrants and sow division in our communities. Prohibits localities from adopting sanctuary policies with regard to immigration (HB2000) This legislation sends a hostile message to immigrant communities. The Constitution already prevents state government from overriding federal immigration laws. Bill Co-Patron: Jackson Miller. Passed by Republicans. VETOED by Governor. Prohibits the release of individuals suspected of violating immigration laws (HB1468) The law could cause confusion between Virginia law enforcement and their federal counterparts, which currently work closely together regarding immigrants. It also conveys an anti-immigrant message. Bill Co-Patrons: Bob Marshall and John O’Bannon. Passed by Republicans. VETOED by Governor. Requires Department of Social Services to publish a report on each individual refugee who resettles in Virginia (HB2002) Disclosing information about refugees threatens our newest Virginians and sends a message of exclusion. Refugees are already vetted more than anyone else let into the US. Passed by Republicans. VETOED by Governor.
