Instead, I have preferred to turn the spotlight on the careers of other castrati who are less well known to the general public, as I did for Carestini a few years ago. Since then, having had the opportunity to give concert performances of arias written for Farinelli, I found that they suited me far better than I could have imagined – particu lar ly those written by Nicola Porpora (1686-1768), known in his time not only as a composer, but also as one of the greatest singing teachers. I soon became interested in the master-pupil relationship that could have existed between Porpora and Farinelli. Despite the lack of historical sources, we can presume that Farinelli was still a child when he first met Porpora, and that the composer’s views had a strong bearing on the decision to castrate the young prodigy.

It was based on another work that had successfully premièred in 1763 as a Neapolitan opera: Lo sposo di tre, e marito di nessuna. The libretto for Lo sposo di tre, e marito di nessuna was written by Antonio Palomba, and concerns a man who attempts to marry three women and escape with their dowries. In setting this opera, Guglielmi collaborated with Neapolitan composer Pasquale Anfossi, with the former contributing the Opening Ensemble, the three finali and the Baroness’s aria in the third act. After moving to Venice in the mid 1760s, Guglielmi requested Gaetano Martinelli to re- fashion the libretto, keeping the story essentially the same for his new opera Lo spirito di contradizione. Guglielmi wrote all the music for his new production, retaining some of his former ideas. I argue that Pietro Alessandro Guglielmi was a prominent composer and significant eighteenth-century industry figure whose output should be re-incorporated into the repertory of modern performance.

The onset of Neapolitan "expansion" to Russia is connected with Francesco Domenico Araja. He has appeared in St. Petersb urg in 1735 together with a big Italian opera troupe. Tommaso Traetta, Baldassarre Galuppi, Giovanni Paisiello, Domenico Cimarosa, Gennaro Astaritta and other composers went to St. Petersburg following Araja . They have made realities, history, folklore of Russia a part of their own creativity. In addition to biographic occasions, establishment of the called tradition was promoted by the system of composer training developing in Naples since the 16th century. It was made by educational institutions – the conservatories which have trained prominent musicians. Transfer of professional experience from the master to the pupil, i.e. the authoritative personality plays an irreplaceable role in the creative growth of the composer. In this regard, it is necessary to remember such noticeable cultural phenomenon as the Neapolitan composer school (Francesco Durante, Niccolò Jommelli, Giovanni Paisiello, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Niccolò Piccinni, Alessandro and Domenico Scarlatti, etc.).     BMC 7 - Alessandro SCARLATTI: Concertos & Sinfonias Sicilian-born in 1660, Alessandro Scarlatti was trained in Rome. He married in 1678 and later that year was appointed Mae stro di Cappella of San Giacomo degli Incurabili. His first large-scale oratorio-operatic works were performed there the following year when he was only 19. His patrons from the outset were of the highest rank, among them the exiled Queen Christina of Sweden who made him her Maestro di Cappella, Cardinal Pamphili, and the musically indefatigable Cardinal Ottoboni and, in Florence, Prince Ferdinando de Medici. In 1684 at the age of 24 Scarlatti moved to Naples, where he was appointed Maestro di Cappella at the vice-regal court of Naples, at the same time as his brother Francesco was made First Violinist. It was alleged that they owed their appointments to the intrigues of one of their sisters with two Court officials, who were dismissed. For the next two decades over half the new Operas given at Naples were by Scarlatti, producing over 40 works, which were first performed at the Viceregal Palazzo Reale and then at the public theatre of S. Bartolomeo, where Scarlatti was employed as the director along with nine singers, five instrumentalists and a copyist. In contrast to contemporary five-act Venetian Operas, which continued to rely upon mythological characters and stage machinery, Scarlatti's shorter three-act 'D rammi per Musica' centered on the characterization of kings and confidants, lovers and servants. Il Pirro e Demetrio (1694) and La caduta de' Decemviri (1697) were particularly successful. From 1695 his Operas and ‘musical dramas’ incorporated three-movement Sinfonias which soon became standard for all Italian Operas.

Upon witnessing a street challenge between the young singer and a young trumpeter, over which Farinelli is victorious due to his extraordinary voice, George F. Handel, at the time an official musician of the English court and being present almost by chance, proposes a trip to London. Farinelli rejects the offer which leads to a tense relation between the two of them, a relationship full of antipathies but at the same time with a certain degree of mutual recog- nition. In contrast to Farinelli’s scarcely addressed confinement in the Spanish court, at the peak of his career, the film is rich in showing us the varied visits of the Broschi brothers to different European sce- narios, blended with episodes where Farinelli’s seductive character triggers numerous love scenes final- ly consummated by his brother Ricardo, anatomically intact.
