Because of the unfortunate exploitation of research participants globally, safeguards for protections are necessary. Most international codes and guidelines originated as responses to the abuse and mistreatment of research subjects. By the 1890s, antivivisectionists were already calling for laws to protect children, as a result of the increasing numbers of institutionalised children being subjected to vaccine experiments in Europe and the USA. Just after the turn of the century, the first attempt to test a polio vaccine was thwarted after the American Public Health Association condemned the programme. In South Africa, medical scientists were busy with discoveries and innovations as far back as the 1800s. In December 1967, the historic first human heart transplant was undertaken in Cape Town. Although it is unclear how much research preceded this procedure, there is no doubt that the operation was done in a research setting, and it had a far-reaching impact. He attended school and university in Pietermaritzburg, graduating from the then University of Natal with a BA.LLB in 1972. At University, he met one of the founders of Afrapix, Paul Weinberg, who was also studying law. In 1975 he joined a commercial studio in Pietermaritzburg, Eric’s Studio, as an apprentice photographer. In 1977 he joined The Natal Witness as a photographer/reporter, and in 1979 moved to the Rand Daily Mail as a photographer. In 1979, Alfers was offered a position as Photographer/Fieldworker at the National University of Lesotho on a research project, Analysis of Rock Art in Lesotho (ARAL) which made it possible for him to evade further military service. The ARAL Project ran for four years during which time Alfers developed a photographic recording system which resulted in a uniform collection of 35,000 Kodachrome slides of rock paintings, as well as 3,500 pages of detailed site reports and maps.

In his inaugural lecture, Saul Dubow, Smuts Professor of Commonwealth History at Cambridge University, discusses the modern history of science in South Africa in terms of ‘deep time’ and space, drawing links between developments in astronomy, palaeontology, and Antarctic research. He argues that Jan Smuts’s synthetic discussion of South African science in , followed by J. H. Hofmeyr’s discussion of the ‘South Africanization’ of science in , has parallels in post- apartheid conceptions of scientific-led nation-building, for example in Thabo Mbeki’s elaboration of the ‘African Renaissance’. Yet, whereas the vision of science elaborated by Smuts was geared exclu- sively to white unity, Mbeki’s Africanist vision of South African science was ostensibly more inclusive. The lecture concludes by considering South Africa as one of several middle order countries which have used national science and scientific patriotism to address experiences of colonialism and relations of inequality and to assert their influence in regional contexts. I In an easily overlooked passage in his best-selling autobiography, Long walk to freedom, Nelson Mandela recalls how, as a secondary school student, he wit- nessed a performance by the Xhosa praise poet Krune Mqhayi in which the stars were divided amongst the nations of the world.

They stand before us with wondrous modesty which gives lie to their monumental distinction in their various fields; distinctions which colour the purpose of human life. Some of these men and women have proffered to us the ceaseless state of freedom. Some of them have put the acuity of their profound minds at the service of us all without, in turn, exacting hefty material prizes which are a defining mark of our hedonistic modern society. These are men and women, some of whom have painstakingly uncovered the secrets of Science and attuned them to the benefits of humanity. Some of them have re-imagined the frontiers of Law and redefined it in an all- inclusive, enduring manner that accommodates and recognises all South Africans, equally. Some of them have defied the certitudes of gravitational laws of knowledge to take off winglessly into the space of self-didacticism and stayed up there afloat. Some of them have used their aptitudes in the Arts to redefine the conventions of the Arts, in the process capturing the human soul in a fashion rarely seen before. These men and women have enrooted the eternal values of selflessness, love for freedom, racial harmony, equality and self-application for the attainment of the seemingly impossible heights of achievement.

    The formation of the SAIP Pieter Wagener July 2005 1 Introduction he history of physics in South Africa, as many other aspects, is linked to political and socio-economic changes in the country. These can be T associated with the three political eras of our country. It is a testimo- nial to our science community that they have always transcended political and cultural boundaries, often in turbulent times, to unite in the common purpose of promoting science in our country. This was especially evident in the physics community. The political changes since the 1990’s were particularly dramatic and it is with gratitude that we have seen physicists from widely different cultural backgrounds cooperate with a single aim in mind: Promote physics amongst all the peoples of South Africa. This attitude is not only an inspiration for our future, but also for the whole African continent. An outstanding example of reaching the nadir of international physics from lowly beginnings is provided by Richard Varder. Born in 1889 in the rural hamlet of King William’s Town, he joined Ernest Rutherford 23 years later in Manchester to collaborate in the pioneering work on nuclear physics. In the new millenium we can learn from the lessons of the past through the lives of the pioneers who established our physics community. These few scientists brought the expertise of Europe to the southern tip of Africa and an obligation rests on the SAIP to extend this inherited knowledge to the rest of the continent. It is therefore fitting to pay tribute to the physicists who made this possible.

He then entered Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee and graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education-Social Studies with an emphasis in History. He returned to Smithville and was employed as a teacher at the DeKalb County Middle School for one year and at the DeKalb County High School for two years.

    Oration for Brian Warner, Hon. D.Sc. @ UCT on Monday 14 th . December, 2009. by Francis Wilson, University orator. v. 1.3 Brian Warner One of South Africa’s great traditions, now 300 years old, has been our participation in the global network of scientists coming and going to and from this country in pursuit of knowledge, understanding and truth. The first of these scientists to make a mark was a German doctor, Peter Kolb, who arrived here in Cape Town in 1705 where he was to live for ten years studying all manner of things that were new to European eyes: animals; plants; the customs of the Khoe and much else besides. Two generations later a new wave of scientists arrived in Cape Town including two Swedish botanists (trained by Linnaeus) Thunberg and Sparrman, a French ornithologist Francois le Vaillant, a Dutch soldier-explorer Robert Gordon and then, from England, William Burchell the great naturalist. He in turn was followed by Sir John Herschel the astronomer who was to have such an influence on Charles Darwin who met him here in Cape Town in 1836 on the last leg of the voyage of the Beagle. This global network of scientists was enriched not only by those born and educated here who left to shine elsewhere like Basil Schonland, Max Theiler, Allan Cormack, Aaron Klug, Sydney Brenner and Jonathan Dorfan but also by those who came and stayed, like Raymond Dart and Robert Broome who---based in South Africa---- revolutionised our understanding of the origins of human beings. The arrival in 1972 of the young Brian Warner as Professor of Astronomy in the department he was to head at UCT for the next 32 years was to be no less enriching.
