Pat Summitt As I write this newsletter I am in the Highlander, looking over that most beautiful of school sights, Lower Field, emerald green after the blessing of lots of soaking rain in Grahamstown, with the early preparations underway for a feast of weekend cricket against Grey. It is a beautiful late summer morning, and as I savour my pot of tea, the wonderful cricket-y scene below is betrayed by the slight fatigue evident in the leaves, the slight nip in the air, and the pale blue of an increasingly distant sky. These are all signs that soon the seasons will have turned. The posts will be up, and the voices of Andreans everywhere will be echoing across Grahamstown as the Blues run out to represent us all in another display of great rugby. We look forward to another cracker of a winter sports season, not just in rugby, and not just at top-team levels. Because of the unfortunate exploitation of research participants globally, safeguards for protections are necessary. Most international codes and guidelines originated as responses to the abuse and mistreatment of research subjects. By the 1890s, antivivisectionists were already calling for laws to protect children, as a result of the increasing numbers of institutionalised children being subjected to vaccine experiments in Europe and the USA. Just after the turn of the century, the first attempt to test a polio vaccine was thwarted after the American Public Health Association condemned the programme. In South Africa, medical scientists were busy with discoveries and innovations as far back as the 1800s. In December 1967, the historic first human heart transplant was undertaken in Cape Town. Although it is unclear how much research preceded this procedure, there is no doubt that the operation was done in a research setting, and it had a far-reaching impact. South in SA was established to keep the mines in production, rather than Africa (SA)’s journey in this sphere is interesting, and dates back to to protect the population of mine workers from the high incidence the early 19th century. -

(2) No, not all schools that have these facilities make use of them, because they are not equipped. The total number of schools with library facilities that are not equipped are 3413 schools out of 24 751 schools in the country. 20 2018 Festival Curators Visual and Performance Art Ernestine White-Mifetu ERNESTINE WHITE-MIFETU is currently the curator of Contemporary Art at Iziko’s South African National Gallery. Her experience within the arts and culture sector spans a period of fifteen years. She holds a Bachelors degree in Fine Art (1999) cum CURATED PROGRAMME laude from the State University of Purchase College in New York, a Master Printer degree in Fine Art Lithography (2001) from the Tamarind Institute in New Mexico, a Masters degree in Fine Art (2004) from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, Cape Town, and a Honours degree in Curatorship (2013) from the University of Cape Town’s Michaelis School of Fine Art. Ms White-Mifetu obtained her initial curatorial experience working as the Exhibitions Coordinator (2004-2006) and thereafter as Senior Projects Coordinator for Parliament’s nation building initiative, the Parliamentary Millennium Programme. Prior to this she worked as the Collections Manager for Iziko’s South African National Gallery. As an independent artist her work can be found in major collections in South Africa as well as in the United States. Ernestine White’s most recent accomplishment was the inclusion of her artwork into permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, US. Music Samson Diamond SAMSON DIAMOND is the appointed leader of the Odeion String Quartet at the University of the Free State and concertmaster of the Free State Symphony Orchestra (FSSO). He has appeared as violin soloist with all premier South African orchestras and has played principal second of Europe’s first black and ethnic minority orchestra, Chineke! Orchestra, since its inception. -

National Report on the Performance of IndividualSchools in the 2000 Senior Certificate Examinations Foreword At the beginning of last year I released the National Report on the Performance of Individual Schools in the 1999 Senior Certificate Examination. This was the first time that such as report had ever been released to the public in South Africa. My purpose in doing so was to provide the public with an overview of the performance of individual schools in the Senior Certificate examination. I also stated then that the focus in 2000 would be on the underperforming schools and “…to pull these schools out of this abysmal situation”. A 5% increase in the pass rate was targeted for 2000. Today I am particularly proud to release the National Report on the Performance of Individual Schools in the 2000 Senior Certificate Examination. We have not only improved the overall pass rate by 9%, but we have broken the cycle of underperformance in many schools. The number of schools that obtained a pass rate between 0% and 20% has decreased from 940 in 1999 to 499 in 2000. Once again I would like to congratulate those students who have succeeded as well as their teachers and principals who worked very hard to provide support and a good quality education to our learners, sometimes in very difficult circumstances. I also want to extend my gratitude to the parents and provincial and national departmental officials for their support and encouragement to ensure the success of the Senior Certificate examination. The challenge for 2001 will be to consolidate our gains and to improve even further. -
