COMMONWEALTH WAR GRAVES COMMISSION Tree Planting and Management Breadth of Opportunity The spread of the Commission's responsibilities over some 148 countries in temperate, mediterranean, tropical and desert climates provides wonderful opportunities to experiment with nature's wealth of tree species. We are particularly fortunate in being able to grow many interesting and beautiful trees and we will explain how we manage them and what splendid specimens they can make. Why Plant Trees? Trees are planted for a variety of reasons: their amenity value, leaf shape and size, flowers, fruit, habit, form, bark, landscape value, shelter or screening, backcloth planting, shade, noise and pollution reduction, soil stabilisation and to encourage wild life. Often we plant trees solely for their amenity value. That is, the beauty of the tree itself. This can be from the leaves such as those in Robinia pseudoacacia 'Frisia', the flowers in the tropical tree Tabebuia or Albizia, the crimson stems of the sealing wax palm (Cyrtostachys renda), or the fruit as in Magnolia grandiflora. above: Sealing wax palms at Taiping War Cemetery, Malaysia with insert of the fruit of Magnolia grandiflora Selection Generally speaking the form of the left: The tropical tree Tabebuia tree is very often a major contributing factor and this, together with a sound knowledge of below: Flowers of the tropical the situation in which the tree is to tree Albizia julibrissin be grown, guides the decision to the best choice of species. Exposure is a major limitation to the free choice of species in northern Europe especially and trees such as Sorbus, Betula, Tilia, Fraxinus, Crataegus and fastigiate yews play an important role in any landscape design where the elements are seriously against a wider selection.

Gredleriana Vol. 1 / 2001 pp. 9 – 81 Neue Erkenntnisse und Untersuchungen über die Roßkastanien-Miniermotte Cameraria ohridella Deschka & Dimic, 1986 (Lepidoptera, Gracillariidae)* Klaus Hellrigl** Abstract New Knowledge and Research on the Horse-Chestnut Leafminer Cameraria ohridella Deschka & Dimic, 1986. The present paper tries to give a comprehensive survey of the horse-chestnut-leafminer C. ohridella by interdisciplinary views and analysis of the host plant range (geography and system of plants) and special circumstances of the leafminer (distribution, affinity, parasitism, occurence of generations). The rapid expansion of C. ohridella in the various countries of central and Southern Europe is ex- plained; in Italy, where the introduction of the leafminer took place in 1994/95 via South Tyrol [central North] and Julian Venetia [North-East], the entire northern region (north of the 44th degree latitude) has already been attacked. The question of the host plants of C. ohridella is analysed and discussed: the leafminer attacks mainly the European horse-chestnut Aesculus hippocastanum, occasionally and to a much lower degree also the sycamore Acer pseudoplatanus; on the other hand, American buckeyes are largely attack-resistant. The relationship between the single species of Genus Aesculus and Genus Acer and their suitability as host-plants for Cameraria are discussed. By comparison of the structures of genitalia it is proved that there is a close relationship with a Cameraria species from Japan, C. niphonica Kumata, that lives on Acer spp. and must be regarded as a sister species of the South-East-European C. ohridella. On the other hand, there is no relationship with the North-American Cameraria species, not even with C.

  • The Trees of Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull
THE TREES OF WARWICKSHIRE, COVENTRY AND SOLIHULL PART 3 - SPECIES ACCOUNTS FOR BROADLEAVED TREES (ACACIA TO MORUS ) Steven Falk, 2011 Sycamore, Compton Wynyates Catalogue of Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull Trees The trees (alphabetical by scientific name) Acacia baileyana – Cootamundra Wattle Source: Australia (New South Wales). Introduced to Britain in about 1888. Distribution: Rare locally, a very tender species requiring shelter. Further Notes: Resembling Mimosa but with smaller, silvery-blue foliage. Key locations for seeing some: Keresley House, Coventry - on owner’s 2007 plant list, but not seen by the author; Holbrooks Grange, Long Lawford (a young one in a walled garden). Acacia dealbata – (Hardy) Mimosa Source: SE Australia & Tasmania. Introduced to Britain in 1820. Distribution: Seemingly rare locally and very unsual to find in the Midlands. Further Notes: A distinctive woody member of the pea and bean family with feathery leaves and bright yellow flowers produced in late winter and spring. The pods resemble those of laburnums. Key locations for seeing some: High Street, Kenilworth (a fine one in front garden of Clinton House, opposite slope down to Abbey Fields); possibly Barton House, Barton on the Heath (a young specimen with foliage seemingly identical to other A. dealbata specimens seen). Largest local specimen: The Kenilworth tree (1.04m GBH/2008). Acer – Maples Medium-sized to large deciduous trees with opposite leaves. All maples produce characteristic double-winged (paired) fruits that cannot really be confused with those of any other tree. This is useful, because the leaf shape of maples varies greatly and many unrelated trees have lobed leaves resembling those of maples (e.g.

  • Acer - an Update by Koen Camelbeke
Reprinted from The Maple Society Newsletter Autumn/Fall 2020 Vol 30/3 Accepted Names in the Genus Acer - An Update By Koen Camelbeke These are strange and challenging times. But at least one challenge has been completed successfully: the list of accepted names in the genus Acer is now finished and has been published in this edition of the Newsletter, and on the Society website, https://maplesociety.org/en-gb/content/accepted-names- genus-acer. Starting with Acer acuminatum and ending with Acer yui (yes, we are definitely in need of a species name starting with "z" !) we arrive at 156 species and 94 infraspecific names: so 250 accepted names in total. This work is the result of a joint effort of the members of the "species group": Tony Aiello; Hugh Angus; Dan Crowley; Douglas Justice; and myself. Of course, it was improved and corrected thanks to the input of several maple specialists and growers, and I would like to thank them all for their help in achieving this goal! Needless to say, as soon as a names list is published, it becomes outdated. Moreover, taxonomy and the defining of groups is, in part, a subjective process so there can always be and remains a discussion about this or that name. Most importantly, an accepted names list is finally available, and we remain of course always open to comments and improvements to this list! This will never be a static document, so regular updates will be published whenever needed. The next step, of course, is now to publicize this list for anyone who is involved in some way with maple names to pick it up and use it as a standard.

But much more interesting collections can occur within historic properties, municipal parks, large private gardens, college campuses, cemeteries, churchyards, along certain suburban roads, and in certain woods. This volume provides information on such sites with summary descriptions for the majority, but more detailed lists for 55 of the most interesting sites which you can print out if you wish to search these sitesand find the most interesting specimens. These detailed lists are still provisional as it can take several visits and an awful lot of critical checking to produce a fully accurate and comprehensive tree list for a better site. Sites in red are those that still require checking (in some cases permission was refused). Trees in the lists tat are red are those that still require confirmation, perhaps because they need to be seen at a particular time of year (e.g.
