Albion Sports Technology DEFENCE SYSTEMS www.albionx.com LOUISE LORKIN (C.E.O.) LEVEL2, 7 MARTIN STREET, SOUTH MELBOURNE VIC 3205 TELEPHONE: (+61) 488 232 369 EMAIL: [email protected] ALBION SPORTS TECHNOLOGY COMPANY OVERVIEW Famous for half a century as makers of Austra- lia’s Baggy Green™ cricket cap, Albion Sports Technology derives its name from its first factory location - Little Albion Street, Surry Hills (Sydney). Albion’s roots go back to World War II when it was engaged by the US Army to manufacture military kits. Over the next two generations, design and manufacturing capa- bilities graduated from high-quality team uniforms to its current position as an industry innovator in protective sports gear. The late-1970s saw Albion pioneering the first cricket helmet specifically designed to pro- tect elite-level batsmen. A new range of light- weight protective apparel – ‘Albion X’ is now destined for another kind of athlete—the soldier. This apparel uses cutting-edge tech- nology to deliver specific point-of-impact absorption that is customised to each activity. UNIQUE VALUE PROPOSITION In elite sport, any innovation designed to deliver athletes a competitive edge – whether improved performance, protection and/or comfort – is highly valued. Albion’s member- ship of the Australian Sports Technology Net- work enables it to access the latest develop- ments in clothing and equipment. PAGE 1 DEFENCE SYSTEMS The needs of modern soldiers have many parallels with those of contemporary high-performance athletes, thus providing opportunities for cross-applications to the military domain. Patents have already been lodged for applications relating to the achievement of multiple-stage levels of pro- tection from the use of impact-absorbing foam within sports garments. ‘Albion X’ inno- vations include a replacement for the tradi- tional “Michelin Man” strap-on cricket pads via the incorporation of a much lighter and more agile foam layer. Similar approaches can also be applied to the Army’s soldier combat ensemble. Local design capabilities enable Albion recognises the role that Albion to tailor products specific to user detailed engineering can play in the code, gender, environment and terrain. design of performance features into Future sportswear innovations using embed- sportswear that aligns with physical ded devices will enable the monitoring of an challenges anticipated to be experi- athlete’s performance – such as heart rate and enced in the operational environ- other physical performance indicators – to be ment. relayed back to the laboratory. PAGE 2 DEFENCE SYSTEMS OUR ROLE IN HORIZON DEFENCE SYSTEMS Albion Sports Technology welcomes the establishment of Horizon Defence Systems, and the opportunity it will bring to provide Australian soldiers with a local source of expertise that can apply advanced technology and protection materials to the combat ensemble in the most cost-effective way. “Through Horizon Defence Systems, we now have a group of aligned Australian businesses whose principal focus is on the soldier, and how the future combat ensemble can be designed and integrated in a holistic way,” said Albion Sports Technology CEO Louise Lorkin. “This is clearly a better approach than that taken historically, where products were added without prioritising how they would all fit together, and how they would function in variable terrain. Horizon Defence Systems brings the focus back to the right place, and that is onto the soldier. We put the soldier first. Horizon is working to bring all relevant future technologies together for the soldier, and to provide the best capability outcome for Defence.” OUR VISION IN DEFENCE Albion Sports Technology believes that the use of protective foams in all types of sports will only continue to grow, driven by both performance and safety consider- ations. For example, the latest organisation to express interest in Albion clothing pro- tection innovations is Jockey Australia. According to Ms Lorkin, “Thicker and heavier protection garments and equipment for the soldier is not the answer to enabling a more effective Defence force. Given where the science is taking us, we need to look to developments in other areas that can be aligned with each soldier’s evolving opera- tional requirements.” PAGE 3.

  • The Eye of Istar a Romance of the Land of No Return
The Eye of Istar A Romance of the Land of No Return By William Le Queux The Eye Of Istar A Romance Of The Land Of No Return Prologue. Thrice hath the Fast of Ramadan come and gone since the Granter of Requests last allowed my eyes to behold the well-remembered landscape, scarcely visible in the pale light of dawn. Hills, covered with tall feathery palms, rose abruptly from the barren, sun-scorched plain, and, at their foot, stood the dazzlingly-white city of Omdurman, the impregnable and mysterious headquarters of Mahdiism, while beyond, like a silver ribbon winding through the marshes, the Nile glided, half veiled by its thin white cloud of morning vapours. Within the walled and strongly-guarded city was a scene, strange and fantastic. The air, heavy with war rumours, was rent by the deafening strokes of enormous brazen tam-tams, mingling with the loud shouts of dark-faced Jalins, half-naked negro fanatics of the Kunjara and the Dinka, armed cap à pie, ready for battle at a moment’s notice. The excitement, which had increased daily for many months, had risen to fever heat. Throughout the short, hot night, the great nahas—those huge brass war drums of the Khalifa Abdullah, Ruler of the Soudan—had been beaten by relays of perspiring negro slaves, glittering with beads and trinkets, the indescribable monotonous rhythm causing the wildly-excited populace to cry, “Nakelkum!” and “Naklulkum!” as, in the fresh, cool hour, when the Wolf’s Tail—the first brushes of grey light which appear as forerunners of dawn—showed in the heavens, they seized guns, spears and shields, and rushing from their houses across the great square of Abu Anga they congregated in the wide, open space near the Tree of Hadra, where the Raya Zerga, or dreaded black standard of the Khalifa, hung ominous and motionless in the morning air.

David Dunstan, "Wisden History" David Dunstan WISDEN HISTORY. Captain Cook and cricket caps. The review of the National Museum of Australia, with its heartfelt yearning for the return of great-white-bloke stories, makes for rather vexing reading ..." Great-white-bloke history is bunk. We can do better. The Age 18 July 2003, Ann McGrath, director of the Australian Centre for Indigenous History at the ANU. Retired banker and horse breeder paid $425,000 for Donald Bradman's 1948 baggy green cap. On loan for public display, the cap is to do a tour of duty through Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney for the 2003104 summer Test series. Source: Museum bags taxing piece of hi story The Australian 10 September 2003. As if the oval were the wide world, we wait squinting with the gulls through the soft, suntan haze at the distant, lazy middle where the ball is bowled, blocked. Soon Steve Waugh in the baggy green will make the news with a lift of the red ball up over the barmy army into the cloudless blue. Today success is all but guaranteed by the sweep and crack of cricket history, the triumphant Aussie book of Wisden. 1 When Steve and team step on to the hallowed ground wearing the traditional baggy green, they walk beside the legends of Chappell, Miller and Bradman and together they warm the stands, the bars and every last esky on the hill with the promise of still more glory. 58 Volume 31, number 1, May 2004 Such is the passion of the times, beyond the oval, across the nation, our libraries and museums have been refurbished in tribute to the wonder of the willow.

  • Birkenhead School Uniform
Birkenhead School Uniform Academic Year 2018 - 2019 Uniform Guide All pupils are required to wear the regulation School uniform as set out in this booklet. Pupils’ personal presentation, both in School and on the way to and from School, is expected to be of the highest standard. Parents are encouraged to check the School uniform requirements before the beginning of each term. In particular, please make sure that coats are predominantly dark and do not have any large logos. Scarves, if worn, must be dark and be compatible with the rest of the uniform. It is important for pupils representing the School in weekday or weekend fixtures to be dressed in such a way as to bring credit to the School and themselves. We therefore require pupils to wear School uniform when travelling to and from School fixtures, both at home and away, unless otherwise instructed. For cricket fixtures, it is acceptable to wear cricket whites with a School blazer. All items of uniform and games kit (including footwear) should be named. This helps the return or recovery of lost property. Neither jewellery nor make-up (including nail varnish) are permitted below the Sixth Form, with the exception of a plain watch.
