Politics, Church and the Common Good
Politics, Church and the Common Good Andrew Bradstock and Hilary Russell In an article published in the UK religious newspaper Church Times in 2015, the British academic and political thinker, Maurice Glasman, reflected upon the global financial crash of 2008. Suggesting that both ‘liberal economists’ and ‘state socialists’ could only understand the crisis as being ‘fundamentally about money’, with the solution being either to spend more or less of it, Glasman noted how the churches had sought to make a deeper analysis. While the ‘prevailing paradigms’ that governed our thinking about economics and politics had no capacity for recognising ‘sin’ as a contributing factor to the crisis, church leaders such as the Pope and Archbishop of Canterbury had ‘tried to insert the concept of the “good” into economic calculation’ – and in so doing had retrieved ‘some forgotten ideas, carried within the Church but rejected by secular ideologies, which turn out to have a great deal more rational force than invisible hands and spending targets.’1 By ‘forgotten ideas’ Glasman meant the core principles of Catholic Social Thought (CST), a collection of papal encyclicals spanning the last 125 years which constitute the authoritative voice of the Catholic Church on social issues. Drawing upon CST had enabled the pontiff and archbishop not only to challenge the narratives of the political Left and Right, to endorse neither state centralisation nor the centralisation of capital, but rather to highlight values such as human dignity, interdependence and care of creation. Importantly they had drawn attention to the need for markets to promote the wellbeing of all, the ‘common good’. -

The David Nicholls Memorial Lectures No. 1 1999 “STEPPING OUT OF BABYLON: THEOLOGY AND POLITICS IN THE THOUGHT OF DAVID NICHOLLS” Kenneth Leech “STEPPING OUT OF BABYLON: THEOLOGY AND POLITICS IN THE THOUGHT OF DAVID NICHOLLS” The first David Nicholls Memorial Lecture, given at Regents Park College, Oxford, on 9th October 1999 by KENNETH LEECH On hearing the news of David’s death, his dear friend Fr Percy Coleman commented: ‘David did not care about the world -yet he cared passionately about the world.’ In this Zen-like, typically ‘Percyan’ utterance, he captured the heart, the dialectical core, of David Nicholls’s thought: worldly and otherworldly, caring nothing for worldly power and status, caring deeply about justice and mercy in the world. David Nicholls was both a political theorist and a theologian. His political work involved the study of pluralism in the thought of JN Figgis, the political history of Haiti from Dessalines to Duvalier, and, in the years before his death, the relationship between political structures and images of God, the subject of his Hulsean Lectures. Two volumes, Deity and Domination and God and Government, have appeared. He was a polymath: the political scientist; the theologian; the humble and caring parish priest in Littlemore; the polemical pamphleteer; the historian of the Caribbean; and so much else. Chris Rowland, in a talk given shortly after David’s death, said that, while he was never part of the ‘inner circle’ of Oxford theology, he ‘embodied in his life and writing all that is best in Oxford theology’. Many people knew only one or two sides of his life and work. -

Recent scholarship on modern religious history has sought to relocate Britain‟s „secularization moment‟ from the industrialization of the nineteenth century to the social and cultural upheavals of the 1960s. My thesis seeks to add to this debate by examining the way in which the established Church and Christian doctrine continued to play a central role in the politics of the 1980s. More specifically it analyses the conflict between the Conservative party and the once labelled „Tory party at Prayer‟, the Church of England. Both Church and state during this period were at loggerheads, projecting contrasting visions of the Christian underpinnings of the nation‟s political values. The first part of this thesis addresses the established Church. -

Setting the Scene I remember very vividly visiting St Albans Abbey in the run up to Christmas in 2010. We were walking through the great nave of this imposing and very beautiful building dedicated to the greater glory and steadfastness of God majestic and awe inspiring. We took our children, who were then the ages of 6 and 3, as we felt that such a space could speak to them of the impact of God in the midst of a busy preChristmas shopping area. We spoke to them about the importance of remaining quiet in this space, and to respect the wider silence and atmosphere of prayer which seemed to exude all around an attitude which they respected in the way in which only three and six years olds can. Then to our horror, as we walked slowly down the nave, some middle aged woman in pearls, who was sitting on some makeshift stage prior to beginning a choral rehearsal, turned and very loudly told our children to shush! This was not however the welcome which we expected, and it did make me feel somewhat irritated. It did not reflect something of God’s call of everybody is welcome, and that these buildings might, just might, be about a desire for human flourishing, for He came that we might have life in all its fullness.
