And with us today, doing the interviews, are Alessandro Buffa, Lorreta Dosorna, Brian Purnell, and Mark Naison. Jimmy, can you tell us a little about your family and where they came from originally? Jimmy Merchant (JM): My mom basically came from Philadelphia. My dad – his family is from the Bahamas. He – my dad – was shifted over to the south as a youngster. His mother was from the Bahamas and she moved into the South – South Carolina, something like that – and he grew up there.

In fact, the two styles have many parallels. Both were created by African- Americans in the southern United States in the latter part of the 19th century and spread from there in the early decades of the 20th century; both contain the sad sounding “blue note,” which is the bending of a particular note a quar- ter or half tone; and both feature syncopation and improvisation. Blues and jazz have had huge influences on American popular music. In fact, many key elements we hear in pop, soul, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll (opposite) Dinah Washington have their beginnings in blues music. The delegation engaged the audience on Markey’s Green New Deal legislation and other environmental issues. “The Twist”—Chubby Checker (1960) Added to the National Registry: 2012 Essay by Jim Dawson (guest post)* Chubby Checker Chubby Checker’s “The Twist” has the distinction of being the only non-seasonal American recording that reached the top of “Billboard’s” pop charts twice, separately. (Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” topped the holiday tree in 1942, 1945, and 1947). “The Twist” shot to No. 1 in 1960, fell completely off the charts, then returned over a year later like a brand new single and did it all over again. Even more remarkable was that Checker’s version was a nearly note-for- note, commissioned mimicry of the original “The Twist,” written and recorded in 1958 by R&B artist Hank Ballard and released as the B-side of a love ballad. Most remarkable of all, however, is that Chubby Checker set the whole world Twisting, from Harlem clubs to the White House to Buckingham Palace, and beyond. The Twist’s movements were so rudimentary that almost everyone, regardless of their level of coordination, could maneuver through it, usually without injuring or embarrassing themselves. Like so many rhythm and blues songs, “The Twist” had a busy pedigree going back decades. In 1912, black songwriter Perry Bradford wrote “Messin’ Around,” in which he gave instructions to a new dance called the Mess Around: “Put your hands on your hips and bend your back; stand in one spot nice and tight; and twist around with all your might.” The following year, black tunesmiths Chris Smith and Jim Burris wrote “Ballin’ the Jack” for “The Darktown Follies of 1913” at Harlem’s Lafayette Theatre, in which they elaborated on the Mess Around by telling dancers, “Twist around and twist around with all your might.” The song started a Ballin’ the Jack craze that, like nearly every new Harlem dance, moved downtown to the white ballrooms and then shimmied and shook across the country.

Starr-Waterman American Popular Music Chapter 8: “Rock Around the Clock”: Rock ’n’ Roll, 1954‒1959 Key People Alan Freed (1922‒1965): Disc jockey who discovered in the early 1950s that increasing numbers of young white kids were listening to and requesting rhythm & blues records played on his Moondog Show. Antoine “Fats” Domino (b. 1928): Singer, pianist, and songwriter, who was an established presence on the rhythm & blues charts for several years by the time he scored his first large-scale pop breakthrough with “Ain’t It a Shame” in 1955 and ultimately became the second best-selling artist of the 1950s. Barbra Streisand (b. 1942): Impactful recording artist who has delighted audiences on Broadway, in movies, and in concert, also known for her successful LP sales. Big Joe Turner (1911‒1985): Vocalist who began his career as a singing bartender in the Depression era nightclubs of Kansas City; one of Atlantic Records’ early starts, and recorded the original “Shake, Rattle, and Roll.” Bill Black (1926‒1965): String bassist who recorded with Scotty Moore and Elvis Presley for Sun Records. Bill Haley and the Comets: Influential rock ’n’ roll band influenced by western swing music who recorded the first number one rock ’n’ roll hit “Rock around the Clock.” Brenda Lee (Brenda Mae Tarpley) (b. 1944): Recording artist of the early 1960s known as “Little Miss Dynamite” who sang hits like “Sweet Nothin’s.” Buddy Holly (Charles Hardin Holley) (1936‒1959): Clean-cut, lanky, and bespectacled singer, songwriter, and guitarist of the 1950s who, along with his band, the Crickets, recorded influential hits like “That’ll Be the Day” and made frequent use of double- tracking.

EDITION #20 – September 2008 SPECIAL "SHADOZ" ISSUE!! "Shadoz 2008" marked our 6th anniversary, as well as the 50th anniversary of Cliff and The Shadows. Yet another new venue, and, from all reports the best yet. On a sad note, we recently lost one of our Shadoz friends, Don Hill. Don played drums for Harry's Webb and The Vikings last year, and was one of the 'stalwarts' of Shadoz in recent times. R.I.P. Don. TONY KIEK (Keyboards) and GEORGE LEWIS (Guitar) were fresh from a tour of the UK, where they appeared at a number of Shadows clubs. They were gracious enough to help out by filling the 'dreaded' opening spot. Their set was a wonderful introduction to the day, and they featured some great sounds with WONDERFUL LAND / FANDANGO (with WALTZING MATILDA intro) / DANCES WITH WOLVES / THING-ME-JIG / RODRIGO'S CONCERTO / GOING HOME (THEME FROM 'LOCAL HERO') / THE SAVAGE / SPRING IS NEARLY HERE Whilst Tony and George travelled down from Sydney, no less a feat were the next band, who have travelled from overseas – Phillip Island! - ROB WATSON (Bass) was formerly with Melbourne group "The Avengers", TONY MERCER (Lead Guitar) also played with various Melbourne groups before "retiring" to the island and forming "SHAZAM", MIKE McCABE (Rhythm) worked in England in the 60's with "Hardtack", MARTY SAUNDERS (Drums) played with the popular showband "Out To Lunch" amongst others, and JEFF CULLEN (Lead vocals and rhythm guitar) sang with The Aztecs in Sydney before Billy Thorpe, then with The Rat Finks. A nice mix of Shads and non-Shads numbers included ADVENTURES IN PARADISE / MAN OF MYSTERY / ATLANTIS / THE CRUEL SEA / THE RISE AND FALL OF FLINGEL BUNT / GENIE WITH THE LIGHT BROWN LAMP / IT'S A MAN'S WORLD / THE SAVAGE / CINCINNATTI FIREBALL (voc) / LOVE POTION NO.9 (voc) / THE WANDERER (voc) / THE STRANGER / WALK DON'T RUN One of the joys of "Shadoz" is the ability to welcome newcomers to our shindig.
