Julie and Julia: Parallel stories in which the world can relate “Julia Child wasn’t always Julia Child,” Eric Powell (Chris Messina) tells his wife as she idolizes Child’s ambitious and fearless cooking. “Julie and Julia” is a moving story, based on two true stories, of how two lost women found themselves through their love for food. Julia Child (Meryl Streep) moved to France with her husband, Paul Child (Stanley Tucci), in 1948. Although Mr. Child worked in the U.S. Embassy, Julia struggled to find something to do with her time. After the realization that she was born to cook, her journey to becoming the Julia Child the world knows and loves was not an easy journey. While the movie-goer watches the lovable Julia conquer her challenges from graduating from the Le Cordon Bleu cooking school to the long process before her book was finally published, the viewers see the parallel journey of Julie Powell (Amy Adams). Julie Powell was just an ordinary girl with an ordinary job, but had an extraordinary dream. “I can be a writer. I have thoughts,” Powell tells her husband. That night her husband helped her set up a blog, where The Julie/Julia Project began – 365 days to cook through Julia Child’s The Mastering of Art of French Cooking. The transitions between Julie and Julia’s lives compliment the story progression perfectly. It’s hard to believe that such a touching story could be so real. Everyone has a moment in their life when they second-guess, why they’re doing what they’re doing. Both Child and Powell supported their wives in the toughest of times. “Julie and Julia” is a refreshing, comedic drama. Julie Powell learned from Julia Child not only how to cook, but also how to have confidence in herself. This movie is embedded with beautiful lessons and storytelling.
