Julie and Julie is a book which is at its heart self indulgent - and as a sort of a partial memoir you expect this. However what I found jarring was the person the memoir was about. Julie Powell cries at every obstacle, throws tantrums when things go wrong, yells at her husband for no reason God only knows what she'd be like in reality. But in a way I liked that, at first. The reality of it all, the way she'd showed a no holds barred view of who she was. Similar to an actress going bare faced in a film - it was a little liberating and strangely fascinating. However that soon got old. Really old. Really fast. No sane, happy person would react the way she does so continuously, with so little explanation. However, saying that, there are positives. She has a nice writing style, the project she undertook was interesting and whilst I doubt I would ever read another book by her unless it was concerning a challenge equally engrossing I didn't actively dislike this book. If there was a star rating for lukewarm water this would be the book for it. In fact the only thing which gave me pains was, you guessed it, the constant childish pessimism of the author. If it's a weigh up I'd say watch the infinitely more interesting and enjoyable movie. It tells you a lot more about the life of Julia Child and stars the wondrous - what more incentive do you need than that?! I have a particular fondness for books that include recipes as part of the narrative and the food is an important part of this book; but these are not recipes most people would feel capable of attempting! I read it after seeing the film but enjoyed the way it captures a particular time in history and in a woman's life in an individual and friendly voice. My only criticism is that it feels slightly too long about two thirds of the way through. Pires 5. This lead me to Julie and Julia. I am a follower and cannot wait to read her next offering. I frequently laughed out loud and since I found my passion for cooking at the same age, l had great fellow feeling. Now I am a thirty-one year old writer. The taste of the marrow is rich, meaty, intense in a nearly-too-much way. In my increasingly depraved state, I could think of nothing at first but that it tasted like really good sex. Performance anxiety and a dry-cleaning bill, those were the only things keeping me from stark raving lunacy. But here, in the Juliaverse Here, I took butter and cream and meat and eggs and I made delicious sustenance. I thought I was using the Book to learn to cook French food, but really I was learning to sniff out the secret doors of possibility. It was quite tasty. But then you're a vegan and you don't count. Julie remembered, as a child, perusing her mother's copy of Mastering the Art of French Cooking when she couldn't sneak peeks at her parents' The Joy of Sex. Surprisingly, she found eroticism in both books and likened reading Julia Child's cookbook to reading pornographic bible verses. There was the purity of the ingredients--butter, fresh vegetables, organ meats--flavored with the visceral illustrations and Julia's no-nonsense approach to cooking. Perhaps it's no accident that Julie refers to Julia Child as J. Julie Powell's reading of her book makes it an extremely personal account of the project. When she quotes J. Parts of the book are disturbing, such as the occasional filthy conditions of her kitchen and artery-clogging richness of some of the recipes, but Julie bravely perseveres. Anyone squeamish about preparing lobster should fast forward when Julie begins the recipe that calls for cleaving a live lobster in two. As distasteful as she finds the task, she completes it as part of her undertaking, but swears she'll never prepare that recipe again.

It is difficult to explain the emotional extremes that learning something so essential to the soul can be. I guess you have to be there.
