    2021 Book News Welcome to our 2021 Book News. As we come towards the end of a very strange year we hope that you’ve managed to get this far relatively unscathed. It’s been a very challenging time for us all and we’re just relieved that, so far, we’re mostly all in one piece. While we were closed over lockdown, Mark took on the challenge of digitalising some of Venture’s back catalogue producing over 20 downloadable books of some of our most popular titles. Thanks to the kind donations of our customers we managed to raise over £3000 for The Christie which was then matched pound for pound by a very good friend taking the total to almost £7000. There is still time to donate and download these books, just click on the downloads page on our website for the full list. We’re still operating with reduced numbers in the building at any one time. We’ve re-organised our schedules for packers and office staff to enable us to get orders out as fast as we can, but we’re also relying on carriers and suppliers. Many of the publishers whose titles we stock are small societies or one-man operations so please be aware of the longer lead times when placing orders for Christmas presents. The last posting dates for Christmas are listed on page 63 along with all the updates in light of the current Covid situation and also the impending Brexit deadline. In particular, please note the change to our order and payment processing which was introduced on 1st July 2020.

"Where there's muck there's money" is well-known to us, and there can have been few decades that have borne this out more fully than the decade of the sixties now passed. Obscene books, obscene films, obscene "plays" have certainly brought in the money for their unremem- bered authors, producers and actors. Memoirs of prostitutes and criminals have brought easy wealth; a drug offence has become almost essential publicity for some. Decent discretion is now labelled hypocrisy, and skeletons that used to be in cupboards are now expected to be proudly displayed. Writers of "plays" have turned a quick penny by shooting little arrows at long-accepted heroes; the writers' names are soon forgotten, but those at whom they have shot have had an awkward habit of standing secure, unsullied: Havelock, Nightingale, Churchill, Nelson. Not to be out-done, some churchmen have jumped on the wagon. At first it was to help prove the literary merit of "Lady Chatterley's Lover". Then a new "humanism" became the vogue, and a clerical collar became the badge of the avant-garde, provided its wearer was disproving the divinity of Christ, or "rationalising" the faith by which he is presumed to live. The man with the muck-rake certainly had his head well down.

    An area with several pubs, served by Keighley Bus Company, includes Kildwick, Cross Hills, Sutton and Eastburn. These are villages on Dalesway bus route number 66, between Keighley and Skipton. There are seven Real Ale bars on the bus route in this area. The pubs are within walking distance of each other, but it is possible to catch the bus between them if preferred. Buses run twice an hour during the day on Monday to Saturday, hourly evenings and Sundays. The best ticket to buy is a KDay ticket, which can be bought on board Keighley Bus Company services at a cost of £4.50 or via the Transdev Go web app. These tickets can also be used on the Burnley Bus Company M4 between Colne and Keighley. There is no favoured route so this article will describe a route from Kildwick to Eastburn. 1. This is a Pickles Pub Company pub, near Kildwick church. It normally sells Saltaire Blonde and Taylor’s Landlord. Closed Mondays & Tuesdays (except Bank Holiday) open at 4pm Wednesday & Thursday, 3pm Fridays and all-day Saturday & Sunday. On leaving the pub head towards the river and, after crossing the river, look for a footpath on your right and follow it as it goes next to the river and under the road bridge, so avoiding crossing this very busy road. Turn right into Station Road and look out for Naylor’s Brewery on your left.
