Education Through Fencing ANNE SCHLEY DUGGAN Texas Women's University Denton, Texas Education is charged with grave and far-reaching responsibilities, and rightly so, for it is concerned primarily with the development of persons who, in turn, shape the society in which we live. In every period of crisis or change, the prevailing system of educationis cnallenged, tl.erefore. and a re- examination of its basic objectivesas well as of the specific media for their realization is undertaken generally. Earliest high school and college faculties are engagedin this process of determining toward what ends they are teaching and of selecting those media in terms of subject matter,experiences, methods of organization and approach, etcetera, most likely to result in the ends sought. Those engaged in the particular area of physical educationare concerned, therefore, with a re- examination of their programs with respect to the specific contributions to the development of educated individuals that may be achieved through this area. In the realm of sports for girls and women. objectives have been scrutinized and restatedfromtimetotime with certainbasic objectivesre- emphasized because they are thoroughly sound. Translated into activities conducive to their realization, they have focussed attention upon those sports activities that contribute to the development of bodies that are both attractive and fitin terms of such fitness objectives as endurance, strength, flexibility, body control, balance, coordination, relaxation and morale with implications for living which is effective and happy because it includes in its dailypattern not only efficiency in work but also a sense of happy fulfillmentin play with members of one's own and the opposite sex. To particularize. how does fencing as an important activityin the sports program for girls and women contribute to the fundamental purpose of education the development of better persons with minds, bodies and spirits thoroughly developed and completelyco- ordinated into the perfect whole? In the firstplace, fencing is one of the oldest of our sports. Traditionally, it brings to the physical education curriculum, there- fore, a background which is rich and fascinating in historical signif- icance because its development is closely interwoven with the ideo- logies and customs of peoples of all times and places. Whena TOUCHE! EDUCATION THROUGH FENCING 7 knowledge of the evolution of the sport of fencing from primitive to modern timesis taught along with the techniques and skills of bottling, a better understanding of various periods Ind phases of history and civilization may be readilyacquired.IThe I'm:alio') of the antecedents of the modern sport in warfare, itrole in the colorful days of chivalry and knighthood, its sponsorship by tl..! nobility in the courts of various European countries, its inspiratio, or impetus to the arts of literature, sculpture and painting theare indeed knowledges ,!ompatible with an education and more easily act:v..ted in conjunction with a mastery of the sport itself. Many t.(Went of fencing has participated more fully than the non-fencer in leading or in observing Shakespeare's plays with their many references and passages devoted to the art of fencing. These are scarcely compre- hensible to those unacquainted with the sport and much of the wit and subtle allusions are thus lost. For example, Mercutio', dying soliloquy after his duel with Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet is con- sidered by dramatists a highlight in the play with its disparaging references to Tybalt's fencing methods as those of a braggart who "fights by the books of arithmetic." Inthe second place, fencing contributes to the fundamental purposz of ,:ducation in that it fosters the development of a mental pattern which enables the devotee to appraise situations quickly and to reach them effectively.Itentails the skill of making rapid decisions based upon a quick but conclusive comprehension of all the factors involved. It necessitates the so- called split-wcond timing in the thinking and acting process which a skillful fencer coordinates perfectly with her movements of mind, arms, legs ald

In the broadest possible sense, fencing is the art of armed combat involving weapons directly manipulated by hand, rather than shot or thrown. Why Fencing? If you’re reading this guide, you obviously have some interest in this unique activity. Maybe it’s the cool weapons that initially sparked your curiosity, or the distinctive clothes, or the intricate strategy involved. No matter your initial ingress into the world of fencing, the more you learn about it, the more you will want to participate. Coordination, speed, agility and self-assurance are just a few of the qualities this sport requires of its participants. A fencer needs not only to be quick of body but of mind as well. The intensity of fencing, and the extreme demands it places on one are a natural result of fencing's violent history. And while fencing has morphed from combat to sport, and possessing these skills no longer carries a life or death consequence, they are, however, in large part what make fencing such an exhilarating endeavor. A successful fencer must be capable of mounting powerful driving attacks or conversely, of making subtle and crafty defenses, all within the space of a few seconds.

    FENCING RULES 1995 Edition United States Fencing Association, Inc. © United States Fencing Association, Inc. 1995 FOREWORD This American version of the international rules governing fencing competitions is translated and adapted from the 1994 French edition published by the FIE and incorporates changes made by the FIE Congresses through 1995. Unless otherwise noted here or in the USFA Operations Manual, these rules apply to fencing competitions in the United States. Two appendices are included with this 1995 edition: Appendix A – The Fencer’s Publicity Code is part of the FIE Rules for Competitions. Appendix B – The FIE has published a number of “Temporary Provisions” concerning competition formats and certain other rules. The complete, updated text is included in Appendix B; notes are also located in the text in appropriate locations. The USFA, Inc. (founded as the Amateur Fencers League of America in 1891) is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization primarily engaged in increasing participation in the sport of fencing. Membership in the USFA, in an appropriate category, is open to anyone who has an interest in fencing. The USFA is the official governing body for amateur fencing activities in the United States, and is so recognized by the United States Olympic Committee and the International Fencing Federation (FIE). Accordingly, the authority to enact, amend, and repeal the rules governing amateur fencing in the United States rests solely with the Board of Directors of the USFA. As a matter of policy, the USFA normally follows the technical rules enacted for the sport by the FIE, with occasional minor exceptions that are duly announced.
