It is the band's first studio album since the band's hiatus, which runs from the beginning of 2010 to the end of 2014, and the first album with a completely different line-up with founder and frontman . Produced and composed by Burnley, the album took shape at the end of the break and was mostly written before the new line-up even played one note together. The recording process took place after that in both Burnley's personal studio and in the same Phobia studio (2006), when all the band members performed their instruments, including backing vocals performed by guitarist and bassist Aaron Bruch, which made the recording the first to include vocals other than Burnley's vocals. The album was a critical and commercial success. He received mostly positive reception, with many critics praising the album for remaining true to the band's well-established sound, although others criticized it for sounding derivative and formulaic. Burnley described that he did not want to reinvent the wheel with the album. It debuted at number one on the , the first in its catalog, earning 141,000 album equivalent units in its first week, making it still the band's most successful sales effort. The album was released with much greater success on the international chart than previous ; prior to Dark Before Dawn, the band had never charted outside of North America or New York. The album's lead single is Failure, which was announced with the album on March 18, 2015. Background Dark Before Dawn was the first album with former guitarist Aaron Fink and bassist Mark Klepaski. In early 2010, Burnley announced that he was too ill to perform, putting the band on indefinite hiatus while he went through the medical system. Interdiapal problems and legal battles followed in 2011 after Fink and Klepaski allegedly unilaterally gave permission to produce the album's greatest hits and release a remix of the hit Away featuring Sydnee Duran of Valora. Subsequently, both musicians were out of the group and sued for punitive and compensatory damages. Fink and Klepaski's lawyers argued that this was a 2009 agreement allowing Burnley to sack them for a reason, arguing that it was no longer valid because of an indefinite break at Burnley when he was too ill to perform. After the judge ruled on the arbitration, the issues were settled, which was announced in April 2013, as Burnley reserved an exclusive right to continue working under the name Breaking Benjamin. Shortly thereafter, drummer Chad Seliga announced his retirement from the band, citing creative differences. The album began to form near the end of the break. Burnley said that after growing frustration at the lack of answers regarding his health condition, he decided to focus on writing music, saying that Metal Show, I literally took my medical records . and I slammed them like: You know what, forget it, I don't get anywhere with this, so I just decided to stop trying to figure out what it was and just focus on our music, and that's when Dark Before Dawn really started to take shape. After the album was mostly written, Burnley began to gather new members of the band, including Yasen Rauch (guitar; originally from Red), Keith Wallen (rhythm guitar and backing vocals; hailing from ), Aaron Bruch (bass) and Sean Foyst (drums; originally from ). Burnley's record and production described the album as about 95 per cent written before the new line-up even played one note together. While Burnley remained the lead songwriter, Rauch wrote intro and outro tracks, Dark and Dawn, and contributed to Defeated and Never Again, the latter of which was also contributed by Keith Wallen. Burnley said that while it was in 2014 that the record had become cohesive, it was throughout the break that he began to create new material. Recorded and produced in New Jersey at 301 3rd Studio in Ocean City (Burnley's personal studio) and The Barbershop Studios in Hopatong (the same studio with which Phobia was recorded in 2006), Singer clarified: Listen, other people will give you their versions of things, and I can't do anything about it, but I have the right to my own version, and I would say, that I did the same amount of production on this album as I did on other albums, just never had my name. So it was basically a really conscious decision for me to be like, you know, I'm not doing anything different here than I've done in the past. Why shouldn't I be aware that I'm doing this? You know, why don't I get credit for what I'm actually doing? So I just basically did it, and I didn't tell anyone, while the process used to be, I'd people that I was going to do this, then we'll be getting ready to do it and then people will get involved and the credit will go anywhere. So I just didn't tell any soul that I was doing it, I just did it in my own studio and it was great. Guitarist Keith Wallen and bassist Aaron Broch performed all the backing vocals on Dark Before Dawn, unlike previous albums on which Burnley performed his own. Burnley said that the backing vocals worked on the most in regards to production, working on that Metal Show, because, guitar guitars, you know, I mean, what are you going to do, you can customize them and all these things, but singing is a completely different animal, so that's where we spent a lot of time. Because when you play guitar, you can kinda let your style pass, but if you sing (along with) someone you kind of have to sound like them in order to really gel, so they've really changed, I think their personality. Bruch added: These are things like inflection, and vibrato, and making sure you bring it the same. Music For Dark Before Dawn Burnley was the main songwriter, the singer said: I don't want to reinvent the wheel. [...] I think fans notice that the band hasn't changed because I'm the main songwriter I've always been, and my process - that's not going to change. The album was primarily described as hard rock, alternative metal, 13 and post-grunge. M.K. Sheili of MusicSnake said of the music: For those who have enjoyed previous Breaking Benjamin albums, the sound of Dark Before Dawn will be alarmingly familiar. Overall, Dark Before Dawn feels and sounds as if the band is finished with a phobia, some of the instrumentation makes the listener pause and consider if they heard the song on the previous album. Despite its familiarity, Dark Before Dawn offers listeners an incredible lyrical journey, and the album is thoroughly pleasant. Critical Reception Professional RatingsRevue RatingsSource:Supplied The weekly title Ultimate Guitar Archive7.6/1028-Punk News1.5/529 received a generally positive critical reception, with many critics praising the band for staying true to its usual sound, although others criticized the album for being too similar to their previous work. He received a positive response from James Monger AllMusic, noted that as thick, cleverly produced, largely innocuous explosions of general hard rock to go, you could do much worse, and longtime fans would appreciate the fact that Burnley and his new comrades remain true to the band's unwavering allegiance to all things in the late 90s/early 2000s post- grunge/hard rock, but also adding that it's hard to hide the fact that most of these songs are almost interchangeable. Melody's Tom Spinelli praised the album as a surefire sound for their previous material, stating, Overall, this album is all you expect and more from the band. Breaking Benjamin is one of those bands that shouldn't really change their sound, they shouldn't. Citizens' Voice author Kristen Gajdos gave the album a positive review, stating that Dark Before Dawn is well into the band's back catalogue, laying the groundwork for the band's second era. SF Weekly writer Matt Saincome gave the disc a negative review, saying: The only reprieve on this album comes in the form of Track 10, Ashes of Eden, an acoustic love song that is functional, acceptable, and proves that it is a stylistic choice that makes the rest of Dark Before Dawn unbearable for those halfway worthy of the taste of music. The commercial performance of Dark Before Dawn debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in the United States, earning 141,000 album equivalent units in its first week of release. 135,000 of this total were net album sales. This is the first Billboard 200 release in the band's career. By July 2016, Dark Before Dawn had sold more than 360,000 copies in the United States. On August 29, 2016, Dark Before Dawn was certified by the RIAA as Gold. Track Listing Writing Credits adapted from the album booklet liner notes. No.TitleWriter (s)Length1. DarkYasen Rauch2:102.
