  • A Brief Summary of My Researches
    A Brief Summary of My Researches Kefeng Liu My research interest is to solve problems from mathematics and physics with simple and clean ideas, and along the way to learn and to ¯nd new math- ematical structures and theories. Localization techniques in various settings, combining with various subjects of mathematics, have played central roles in my researches. See my ICM lecture [38] for more detailed discussions. I divide my past researches into the following several parts: (1). The applications of modular invariance, the in¯nite dimensional sym- metry in Kac-Moody algebras and mathematical physics, to geometry and topology. From modular invariance we derived several quite general rigid- ity, divisibility and vanishing results about certain topological invariants of a manifold. (2). The use of the explicit expressions of heat kernels on Lie groups to study the geometry and topology of moduli spaces of flat connections on Riemann surfaces, this proves certain conjectural formulas of Witten and gives several new results including general vanishing formulas of intersection numbers. (3). The understanding of mirror symmetry and counting curves on pro- jective manifolds. My joint work with Lian and Yau solves some very general conjectures about the relationship between the numbers of algebraic curves in projective manifolds and hypergeometric series. (4). The proof of the Marino-Vafa conjecture on Hodge integrals on mod- uli spaces of Deligne-Mumford curves, which expresses the generating series of three term Hodge integrals over all genera and any number of marked points in terms of a ¯nite expression of representation of symmetric groups, or Chern-Simons knot invariants.

The former was one of the greatest novelists of the Victorian era; the latter, a Left-wing writer in Republican China. The study analyses five short stories from Zhang’s corpus and compares his works with ten novles of Dickens. The study argues that Dickens is one among other writers that have parallels with Zhang, through the exploration of several aspects of their works. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Dickens’s novels were introduced to China by Lin Shu.

    Department of Mathematics The Department of Mathematics seeks to sustain its top ranking in research and education by hiring the best faculty, with special attention to the recruitment of women and members of underrepresented minority groups, and by continuing to serve the varied needs of the department’s graduate students, mathematics majors, and the broader MIT community. Faculty Awards and Honors A number of major distinctions were given to the department’s faculty this year. Professor George Lusztig received the 2014 Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences “for his fundamental contributions to algebra, algebraic geometry, and representation theory, and for weaving these subjects together to solve old problems and reveal beautiful new connections.” This award provides $1 million for research support. Professors Paul Seidel and Gigliola Staffilani were elected fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Professor Larry Guth received the Salem Prize for outstanding contributions in analysis. He was also named a Simons Investigator by the Simons Foundation. Assistant professor Jacob Fox received the 2013 Packard Fellowship in Science and Engineering, the first mathematics faculty member to receive the fellowship while at MIT. He also received the National Science Foundation’s Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) award, as did Gonçalo Tabuada. Professors Roman Bezrukavnikov, George Lusztig, and Scott Sheffield were each awarded a Simons Fellowship. Professor Tom Leighton was elected to the Massachusetts Academy of Sciences. Assistant professors Charles Smart and Jared Speck each received a Sloan Foundation Research Fellowship. MIT Honors Professor Tobias Colding was selected by the provost for the Cecil and Ida Green distinguished professorship.

    Spring 2021 EMISSARY M a t h e m a t i c a lSc i e n c e sRe s e a r c hIn s t i t u t e www.msri.org Mathematical Problems in Fluid Dynamics Mihaela Ifrim, Daniel Tataru, and Igor Kukavica The exploration of the mathematical foundations of fluid dynamics began early on in human history. The study of the behavior of fluids dates back to Archimedes, who discovered that any body immersed in a liquid receives a vertical upward thrust, which is equal to the weight of the displaced liquid. Later, Leonardo Da Vinci was fascinated by turbulence, another key feature of fluid flows. But the first advances in the analysis of fluids date from the beginning of the eighteenth century with the birth of differential calculus, which revolutionized the mathematical understanding of the movement of bodies, solids, and fluids. The discovery of the governing equations for the motion of fluids goes back to Euler in 1757; further progress in the nineteenth century was due to Navier and later Stokes, who explored the role of viscosity. In the middle of the twenti- eth century, Kolmogorov’s theory of tur- bulence was another turning point, as it set future directions in the exploration of fluids. More complex geophysical models incorporating temperature, salinity, and ro- tation appeared subsequently, and they play a role in weather prediction and climate modeling. Nowadays, the field of mathematical fluid dynamics is one of the key areas of partial differential equations and has been the fo- cus of extensive research over the years.
