he General, Joseph Chalmers, O. Carm., and his Council have called for 2001 to be a Marian Year for T the whole Carmelite Order. This is also to celebrate the 750th anniversary of the pious tradition of the scapular. The Marian Year is seen as an opportunity to deepen the Marian aspect of the Carmelite Order. A variety of events and celebrations are planned during the year. A joint letter of Joseph Chalmers, O. Carm., and Camilo Maccise, OCD, was published. Entitled “Mary in Carmelite ,” the letter was addressed to all members of the Carmelite Family. It highlights the crucial role that Mary has played in the development of Carmelite spirituality. The Roman course of On-going Formation in November 2000 focused on the figures of Our Lady and the Prophet . A joint meeting of the General Councils, O. Carm. and OCD, are planned for May 2001. This will take place at the of Our Lady and St. in , . The publication of The Lady of the Place and a Marian anthology, two texts on the Marian-Carmelite tradition of the Order, are planned. These will be published in Italian, English, and Spanish, the official languages of the Order. A Marian Seminar for experts in will be held in May 2001 for both and . All the papers presented at this seminar are expected to be published. At the 2001 General Chapter, a special celebration in honor of the Marian Year will be held. Representatives of the various branches of the Carmelite Family are expected to be present. Around the world, the celebrations have already begun. At the parish church of San Agustín in the historic center of Tlalpan on February 2, 2001, the Carmelites celebrated the inauguration of the Carmelite Marian year and the 750th anniversary of the scapular. The day, celebrated in midst of very large crowds, also welcomed a group of Carmelites from the United States. The anniversary year has also sparked renewed interest in the scapular devotion and inside presented the opportunity to strengthen the meaning of this ancient object of Carmelite Articles devotion.
