MONDAY, MAY 3, 2021 MEDINA SPIRIT FINE AFTER DERBY WIN HOW TO BUY A DERBY Zedan Racing's Medina Spirit (Protonico) exited his win in WINNER FOR $1,000 Saturday's GI Kentucky Derby in fine shape, according to trainer Bob Baffert, who said he would wait a week before committing the colt to the May 15 GI Preakness S. AHe came out of it well,@ Baffert said Sunday morning. AIt takes about a week to determine, so I=m going to come back next weekend and see. But I don=t see anything discouraging right now.@ Baffert continued, ACan he win the Triple Crown? I don=t know. But he=s the Derby winner, and that=s all that matters. I was coming in here, thinking, I wasn=t sure [if Medina Spirit could win the Derby], everything had to go perfect for him. We were going to go to the lead, and see what happened. What if they challenged him? He made the lead pretty easily, for him, and the other speed horse didn=t break [Rock Your World]. That=s what it=s like in the Derby. You have to get the trip; the other speed horse didn=t get the trip.@ Cont. p5 Medina Spirit returns to Derby winner's circle | Coady The Week in Review, by Bill Finley As consignor Christy Whitman remembers, it was deathly quiet IN TDN EUROPE TODAY when Medina Spirit (Protonico) entered the ring as a yearling at MOTHER EARTH TAKES G1 QIPCO 1000 GUINEAS the 2019 OBS Winter Mixed sale.

  • Epsom Derby & Oaks
Marten Julian’s Epsom Derby & Oaks ONLINE PREVIEW Friday 5 June The Investec Oaks (1m 4f) (4.30) Writing this on Thursday I am assuming the ground will be riding good for the start of the meeting. The going was on the soft side earlier in the week, but temperatures are set to rise and conditions could be quick by Friday unless the forecast thunderstorms hit the course. If they do, then they could bring up to 5mm of rain, which would ease the ground to good to soft, if not softer. There is nothing more frustrating in an analysis of form than a late change in ground conditions, so this uncertainty has to be factored into my preview. Visually the most impressive performance I have seen has come from Crystal Zvezda when she won a Listed trial stakes at Newbury in May. Rated just 78 at the time, on the strength of her maiden win at Lingfield in October, she beat the 98-rated Montalcino going away by three and a half lengths, with 90-rated Pamona half a length back in third. On figures she ran to a mark of around 103, 4lb lower than her new mark of 107. Crystal Zvezda won the race in the manner of a very talented filly. Last in the early stages and still with a wall of horses in front of her a quarter of a mile from home, she was switched approaching the final furlong and in just a couple of strides went clear of her rivals to win with loads in hand.

The Aga Khan Studs flagship sires, Sea The Stars and Siyouni, are members of the elite ranks of European stallions and both enjoyed further Classic glory in 2019. Gilltown Stud’s Sea The Stars won a second consecutive Irish Oaks thanks to the exceptional Star Catcher, also winner of the Prix Vermeille and British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes, while Crystal Ocean shared Longines World’s Best Racehorse honours with Enable and Waldgeist, and champion stayer Stradivarius recorded a streak of ten consecutive races. Haras de Bonneval resident Siyouni was again crowned leading French-based sire. His principal representative was Pat Downes Prix du Jockey Club hero and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe third Sottsass, and 2018 Prix de Diane winner Laurens brought her Manager, Irish Studs Group 1 score up to six with victory in the Prix Rothschild during August.
