Commercial Radio Australia, Joan Warner Said: “Congratulations to All the Finalists on the Recognition of Their Work MEDIA RELEASE 28 AUGUST 2016 Finalists announced for 2016 Radio Awards The finalists in the 28th annual Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs) were announced today with the hotly contested Best On Air Team FM (Metro) finalists including five-time winners Kyle Sandilands and Jackie Henderson, (The Kyle and Jackie O Show, KIIS 1065, Sydney) up against three-time winners Hamish Blake and Andy Lee (The Hamish & Andy Show, SCA Hit Network). Also competing for the title are Jonesy and Amanda (Brendan Jones and Amanda Keller, WSFM, Sydney) (winners in 2012 and 2014); Kate, Tim & Marty (Kate Ritchie, Tim Blackwell & Marty Sheargold, Nova Network, Sydney); Fifi & Dave (Fifi Box & Dave Thornton, Fox FM, Melbourne); and Chrissie, Sam & Browny (Chrissie Swan, Sam Pang & Jonathan Brown, Nova 100, Melbourne). Kyle and Jackie O won the award in 2006, 2007, 2011, 2013 and 2015, while Hamish and Andy won from 2008 to 2010. The Metropolitan Best On-Air Team AM title will be a contest between four-time winners 3AW Breakfast (Ross Stevenson & John Burns, 3AW, Melb); 3AW Nightline/Remember When (Bruce Mansfield & Phillip Brady, 3AW, Melb); The Big Sports Breakfast with Slats & TK (Michael Slater & Terry Kennedy, Sky Sports Radio, Sydney); Breakfast with Steve Mills & Basil Zempilas (6PR, Perth); and Nights with Steve Price (Steve Price & Andrew Bolt, 2GB, Sydney). 3AW’s Neil Mitchell is a finalist for Best Current Affairs Presenter, which he has won four years running, against Tom Elliott from 3AW; Leon Byner from FIVEaa; Chris Smith from 2GB and Ben Fordham from 2GB. Mitchell is also competing for the Best Talk Presenter award against Chris Smith, Steve Price, Ben Fordham and Jeremy Cordeaux from FIVEaa. Other major award categories include: Best News Presenter FM & AM, Best Sports Presenter and Best Music/Entertainment Presenter, which sees smoothfm weekend breakfast host Melissa Doyle (smoothfm, Nova Entertainment, Sydney) a finalist up against fellow Nova presenters Tim Blackwell and Kent (Smallzy) Small, plus Gordie Waters (KIIS 1065 Sydney), Chris Beckhouse (Triple M, Sydney) and Dave Williams (Triple M, Melbourne). This year’s metro finalists for Best Newcomer On-Air include Olympic Gold medallist Susie O’Neill (Nova 106.9, Bris); Sam Pang (Nova 100, Melb); Sarah Faour (Triple M 105.1, Melb); former Home and Away actor Jason “Finn” Smith (Nova Network); and Julian King (2GB, Syd). Entries were received from 260 metropolitan and regional radio stations across Australia. Stations outside the metropolitan areas are well represented at the ACRAs with more than 200 finalists from country and provincial stations. This year the gala black-tie event will be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on Saturday, 8 October and will start at 6.00 pm (red carpet 5.00 pm). Chief executive officer of Commercial Radio Australia, Joan Warner said: “Congratulations to all the finalists on the recognition of their work. Live radio is one of the most demanding mediums to work in and takes high level commitment to creating programs that are compelling, revealing and entertaining, day in, day out. The Radio Awards are a night for everyone to come together to celebrate the best in the industry.” Organised by Commercial Radio Australia, the national Awards cover 33 categories. Winners are announced in each category across three areas: metropolitan, provincial and country commercial radio stations, and encompass all areas of commercial radio broadcasting including news, talk, sport, music and entertainment. The ACRAs differ from television’s Logie Awards in that they are peer judged by industry members. The ACRAs follow the National Radio Conference, which will be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on Friday 7 October. A complete list of the 2016 ACRAs finalists follows.     Still Anti-Asian? Anti-Chinese? One Nation policies on Asian immigration and multiculturalism 仍然反亚裔？反华裔？ 一国党针对亚裔移民和多元文化 的政策 Is Pauline Hanson’s One Nation party anti-Asian? Just how much has One Nation changed since Pauline Hanson first sat in the Australian Parliament two decades ago? This report reviews One Nation’s statements of the 1990s and the current policies of the party. It concludes that One Nation’s broad policies on immigration and multiculturalism remain essentially unchanged. Anti-Asian sentiments remain at One Nation’s core. Continuity in One Nation policy is reinforced by the party’s connections with anti-Asian immigration campaigners from the extreme right of Australian politics. Anti-Chinese thinking is a persistent sub-text in One Nation’s thinking and policy positions. Premised on the notion that mediated politics is now understood “in new ways by new voices” (Jones, 2005: 4), and appropriating what McNair (2003) calls a “chaos theory” of journalism sociology, this thesis explores how two different contemporary Australian political television programs (Sunrise and The Chaser’s War on Everything) are viewed, understood, and used by audiences. In analysing these programs from textual, industry and audience perspectives, this thesis argues that journalism has been largely thought about in overly simplistic binary terms which have failed to reflect the reality of audiences’ news consumption patterns. The findings of this thesis suggest that both ‘soft’ infotainment (Sunrise) and ‘frivolous’ satire (The Chaser’s War on Everything) are used by audiences in intricate ways as sources of political information, and thus these TV programs (and those like them) should be seen as legitimate and valuable forms of public knowledge production.

    MEDIA RELEASE 9 October 2017 Chris Taylor and Andrew Hansen back as hosts of the ACRAs, plus performers & presenters announced Chris Taylor and Andrew Hansen, best known as members of the comedy group The Chaser, will host the 29th annual Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs) in Melbourne, for the second year running. The satirical comedy stars are the first to host radio’s night of nights for the second time, with previous hosts including Shane Jacobson, Sharon Osborne & Merrick Watts, Kelsey Grammer & Amanda Keller, Charlie Pickering and Stephen Curry. Chris and Andrew have worked in radio throughout their careers and were part of the full Chaser team that made their radio debut on Triple M with The Friday Chaser in 2003. The body of work I have produced aims to disrupt the denial of invasion and the erasure of Aboriginal culture through accepted narratives of European settlement of Australia. By aligning collective denial with anxiety, it presents a pathway for remediation through situational exposure; in this case, through works of art. The critical perspective on the invasion and colonisation of Australia is presented in the discursive and non- discursive modes of communication of the coloniser not to arbitrate or appease but to amplify the content. The fantasy of whiteness refers to the habitually enacted and environmentally entrenched assumption that white people can and should superintend the cultural representation of Otherness. This argument is presented in three parts. Part One examines the complex ways in which white anxieties and concerns were expressed through discourses of blackness in nineteenth-century American blackface entertainment. Part Two examines the various transnational discursive connections enabled by American and Australian blackface entertainments in Australia during the nineteenth century. Part Three examines the legacy of nineteenth-century blackface entertainment in twentieth-century Australian culture. Overall, this dissertation investigates some of the fragmentary histories and stories about Otherness that coalesce within Australian culture. This examination suggests that representations of Aboriginality in Australian culture are influenced and manipulated by whiteness in ways that seek to entrench and protect white cultural authority. Even today, a phantasmal whiteness is often present within cultural representations of Aboriginality.

    Andrew Bolt Profile Early Life and Family Andrew Bolt was born in Adelaide, Australia, in 1959. His parents were both Dutch immigrants. He attended school in Australia and spent his childhood in remote rural areas. His father was a teacher and principal. He is married to Sally Morrell and has three children. Career Bolt has hosted the weekly television show ‘The Bolt Report’ since 2011. The show focuses on right-wing, conservative commentary, by Bolt and others. However, comments made by Bolt are often also picked up by other media, including left wing and progressive media, who comment on Bolt’s remarks. In 2011, Anne Summers wrote of Bolt in ‘The Monthly’, “Taken together, the columns, the blogs, the radio and the television constitute a formidable media presence and a powerful voice that seems destined to just keep growing.” (Source) He also writes opinion pieces that are published in News Corp publications such as the Herald Sun and The Daily Telegraph. He has experience in all areas of media, having co-hosted a radio show and facilitated a web forum. Court Case In 2011, a Federal Court Judge ruled that Andrew Bolt had breached the Racial Discrimination Act. The ruling was about articles that Bolt had written in 2009, that suggested that light-skinned Aboriginal people claimed their Aboriginality for personal gain. They were ruled as breaches because they contained factual errors and were not written ‘in good faith’. Bolt defended his articles, claiming that they were simply ‘free speech’. Then Opposition Leader Tony Abbott also defended Bolt, stating that “Free speech means the right of people to say what you don’t like, not just the right of people to say what you do like.” Page 1.
