TEAM NOTES:

ALONE AT THE TOP Tonight, Brooks Orpik will be appearing in his 622nd career game –the most games played among defensemen in franchise history. Orpik entered the game tied for the lead (and for 5th place among all players) with Ron Stackhouse:

D-MEN Rank Name GP 1 Brooks Orpik 622 2 Ron Stackhouse 621 3 Dave Burrows 573 (Includes tonight’s game for Orpik)

BEEN THERE BEFORE The Penguins will have to overcome adversity again with Sidney Crosby sidelined indefinitely with a broken jaw. The Penguins have played numerous games without Crosby and Evgeni Malkin over the past three years. During that span, Pittsburgh has played without at least one of the two (and several without both) in 119 of 200 games (59.5%). Incredibly, the Penguins have gone 76-34-9 (.676 pct.) in those games. This year the Penguins have already played 13 games without Malkin, going 11-2 in those games. During his career, Crosby has missed 140 games due to injury. The Penguins have gone 81-43-16 (.636 pct.) in those games. Last year, the Penguins went 37-19-4 (.650 pct.) in the 60 games Crosby missed.

PERFECT MONTH The Penguins completed the month of March with a perfect 15-0 record –the first team in NHL history to have a perfect record in a calendar month (Min: 10 games). During this streak, they have outscored foes by a 52-26 margin. Nine of the 15 wins during this current winning streak have been one-goal wins –with two more of the victories ending with the Penguins scoring empty-net goals. Pittsburgh’s goaltenders have combined to post a .940 save percentage (407 saves/433 shots). Below are some numbers from the Penguins perfect March courtesy of NHL.com:

3: Post-regulation victories (7-6, OTW, at MTL, March 2; 5-4 SOW, at TOR, March 9; 2-1, OTW, vs. PHI, March 24) 4: Games won when trailing after two periods 4: Number of shutouts 5: Number of games played by Evgeni Malkin during the streak 6: Victories against Atlantic Division foes (NYI, 3; PHI, 2; NYR, 1) 10: Different players who have scored game-winning goals 11: Goals from Chris Kunitz –most on team 14: Consecutive games in which Pascal Dupuis was a plus player between March 2-28 (+19 during stretch) 208:24: Month-ending shutout stretch posted by the Penguins –longest in franchise history

SHUTOUT SEQUENCE The Penguins enter tonight’s game having gone 208:24 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal –the longest shutout sequence in franchise history. Heading into tonight’s game, the most-recent goal given up by the Penguins was scored by Philadelphia’s Claude Giroux at 14:09 of the second period on March 24. Pittsburgh enters tonight’s game having posted shutouts in each of the last three games –the first time in franchise history the Penguins have done that. The Penguins have allowed just nine goals over the previous 11 games dating back to March 10 –with four shutouts during that span. During this 11-game stretch, Marc-Andre Fleury and Tomas Vokoun have combined to stop 299-of-308 opposition shots for a .971 save percentage.

PERFECT HOMESTAND? Tonight the Penguins will attempt to post just the second perfect homestand of five or more games in franchise history. They also went 5-0 between Feb. 2-11, 1999. The Penguins have also had two other homestands of at least five games where they haven’t suffered a regulation loss: Dec. 26, 1974- Jan. 4, 1975 (3-0-2) and March 29-April 8, 1997 (4-0-1).

PK STEPS UP –AGAIN The penalty kill was a perfect 4-for-4 against the NY Islanders on Saturday –the third-straight game and seventh time in nine contests they have held the opposition without a goal. The Penguin also killed off a long 5-on-3 disadvantage against New York –the second- straight game they did that. During this nine-game stretch the Penguins have killed off 23 of 25 shorthanded chances (92%).

GOOSE EGG Tomas Vokoun enters tonight’s game having posted a franchise and career-best 162:42-minute shutout sequence. Vokoun has notched back-to-back shutouts –including a season-high 35 saves on Saturday against the Islanders. Vokoun has now posted seven consecutive victories. In his last seven appearances, Vokoun is 6-0 with a 0.67 goals-against average (4GA/359MIN) and a .977 save percentage (168 saves/172 shots).

NO. 1 STAR Sidney Crosby was named NHL ‘First Star’ for the month of March after leading all NHL players in points (25), assists (19) and rating (+19) in 15 games. Crosby had eight multiple-point games in March –including a career-high-tying five assists against the NY Islanders on March 10.

STEPPING UP Evgeni Malkin will be looked upon to fill the void left with Sidney Crosby’s absence. During his career, Malkin has actually posted a higher point-per-game average without Crosby (1.39) than with him (1.18). Last season, Malkin recorded 74 points (34G-40A) in the 53 games Crosby missed –an average of 1.4 points per game. Malkin has tallied points in both games (1G-1A) since returning from a nine-game injury absence. Malkin has at least one point in eight of his previous nine games (3G-7A-10PTS). Malkin has collected nine points (4G-5A) in his last four games against the Sabres. In his most-recent game in Pittsburgh against them, Malkin had five points (3G-2A) on Dec. 17, 2011 (8-3 PGH win).

FLOWER POWER Marc-Andre Fleury ranks second in the NHL with 18 wins. Fleury is currently riding a season-high eight-game winning streak –tied for the fourth-longest streak of his career. Fleury sits two wins shy of reaching the 20-win mark for the fifth-straight year and sixth time in his career. Since dropping his first two home starts of the season, Fleury has won 11 straight home games dating back to Feb. 2. During his streak, Fleury has posted a 1.50 goals-against average (16GA/642MIN) and a .941 save percentage (256 saves/272 shots). Over his last six starts this season regardless of location, Fleury is 6-0 with a 0.88 goals-against average (5GA/343MIN) and a .967 save percentage (145 saves/150 shots) with one shutout.
