Swimming & Diving 1 • Jackrabbit Coaches • Brad Erickson • Head Coach South Dakota State niversity head coach Brad Erickson is entering his th season at the helm of the Jackrabbit mens and womens swimming teams. Since being named head swimming coach in , Erickson has coached the Jackrabbit men to a North Central Conference championship in and the SDS women to an NCC title in . In the season he was named the North Central Conference Mens Swimming Coach of the ear after leading SDS to a fourthplace finish at the conference meet. In the fall of , Erickson was honored with SDSs Ralph Ginn Award for Coaching Excellence, which honors an SDS alumnus in the field of education and coaching. Starting with the season, Erickson has guided South Dakota State through a successful transition to the Division I ranks. he Jackrabbits have steadily raised their standing and point totals at the Jackrabbits at the Summit League Championships in both the mens and womens divisions, with the Summit League Championships womens team claiming runnerup finishes each of the last three seasons. he Jackrabbit Men men also recorded a secondplace finish in . th . At the league championships, Erickson was named Summit League Womens th . Coach of the year after SDS posted its second consecutive runnerup finish. Erickson th . added Summit League Mens Coach of the ear honors to his list of accomplishments in th . after leading SDS to its best finish at he Summit League Championships, which th . were held in Rochester, Mich. th . A SDS graduate, Erickson became the first SDS swimmer to compete in the nd . Erickson has continued to represent SDS at NCAA swimming championships during rd . his coaching career, serving as a meet official and judge at the Division I womens and rd . mens championships since . He also served as the NCAA Division II Championships nd . coordinator and is a past member of the NCAA Swimming Committee. th . Aside from his duties as head swimming coach, Erickson also coached receivers on the nd . Jackrabbit football team from and later served as director of intramurals.

2 Swimming & Diving • Jackrabbit Coaches • Phil Hurley • Assistant Coach Phil Hurley enters his ninth season as assistant mens and womens swimming and diving coach at South Dakota State. Hurley serves as the recruiting coordinator for SDS, specializes in coaching the distance events and assists head coach Brad Erickson with team practices and events. During his time with the Jackrabbits, both the mens and womens teams have consistently raised their standings and point totals at the Summit League Championships. he Jackrabbit women have recorded three consecutive runnerup finishes at the conference championships, while the mens team ascended to second place during the season. Hurley competed collegiately at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., where he served as team captain for three seasons before graduating in . After finishing a military commitment in the .S. Army, Hurley enrolled in graduate school at George Mason niversity in Fairfax, a., serving as a graduate assistant swimming coach for two seasons while completing a masters degree in exercise, fitness and health promotion. While at George Mason, Hurley also coached several club and youth teams in Northern irginia. He has served as the chair of South Dakota Masters Swimming branch and is a member of the nited States Masters Swimming organization.

Sean Letsinger • Diving Coach Sean Letsinger is in his first season with the South Dakota State niversity swimming and diving teams as the diving coach. A native of Knoxville, enn., Letsinger was a letterman diver at the niversity of ennessee from . During the following two seasons, he went on to become the student assistant diving coach for the olunteers, assisting head coach Dave Parrington in leading his divers to multiple top finishes in the SEC Championships. Letsinger held the assistant diving coach position for ennessee Diving from the summer of until the summer of . During his time with ennessee Diving, he assisted in coaching Samuel Smith, who was a finalist in the SA Diving Olympic rials. Additionally, Letsinger served as the head diving coach for Knoxville Catholic High School from the fall of until the spring of . During his time coaching at KCHS, his divers consistently finished in the top eight in all major high school championships. Prior to college, Letsinger ualified and competed in SA Junior Olympic Nationals, one SA Diving Junior Olympic World rials , two SA vs. Canada Junior Challenges , , and one Junior Olympic PanAmerican Games . He competed on several SA Diving inter national teams which included Olympic medalists Nick McCrory, Kristian Ipsen and Kelci Bryant. Letsinger remains the current record holder of the Knoxville Area high school city championships . and has held that record since . While in high school, he was named exas Roadhouse High School Athlete of the Week, ennessee State High School Diver of the ear, and Academic AllAmerican on numerous occasions. Letsinger graduated with a bachelor of science degree in sports management, with a minor in business from the niversity of ennessee in May . He is currently working towards his masters degree in sport and recreation studies at South Dakota State.

Chicoine, Ph.D., has served as the th president of South Dakota State niversity on January , , becoming the third alumnus to lead the states largest institution of higher education. President Chicoine, who graduated in with a bachelor of science in agribusiness, also holds an appointment as professor in the Department of Economics. President Chicoine has a long association with intercollegiate athletics, and is currently serving a fouryear term on the NCAA Presidential Advisory Group. Chicoine also serves as chair of the Presidents Council for he Summit League SDSs conference home for of its varsity sports during the academic year, after filling the role of vice chair for two years. Previously, Chicoine served as the faculty representative to the Big en Conference and the National Collegiate Athletics Association NCAA for the niversity of Illinois at rbanaChampaign. He served as chair of the Budget and Finance Committee for the Big en Conference for nine years of his year term. pon his arrival at SDS, Chicoine implemented an aggressive strategic plan Achieving National Distinction, Strength ening Local Relevance. he plan has four goals enhancing academic excellence, fostering economic growth, expanding the reach of the university, and creating a sustainable financial resource. During his tenure, enrollment has reached record levels of undergraduate students and Ph.D. candidates. Correspondingly, the amount of research grants and contract awards has jumped nearly percent during that time, and research expenditures exceeded million in the academic year. o support the strategic plan, the SDS Foundation in launched an aggressive comprehensive fundraising effort It Starts with SAE A Campaign for South Dakota State niversity which recently reached its goal of million. he most visible support for the campaign can be seen in several construction and renovation projects funded primarily by generous donors, all part of the largest campus building boom since the s. he majority of the facilities enhance the universitys research capabilities and allow for new discover ies that drive technologybased economic development in South Dakota. Building a better academic model has also been part of President Chicoines agenda. In the fall of , SDS launched the states first architecture program through its College of Arts and Sciences. he program, created without any new state funding, will place a special emphasis on sustainable and renewable design practices. he Chicoine administration also developed the new College of Education and Human Sciences in , a merger of the former College of Education and Counseling, College of Family and Consumer Sciences and the Department of Health and Physical Education. It repre sented the first significant academic restructuring in more than years. Dr. Chicoine brought more than years of experience in higher education with the niversity of Illinois to his role as president of SDS and is a nationally recognized economist. Chicoine received an M.S. in agricultural econcomics from the niversity of Delaware in , and completed an M.A. in economics at Western Illinois niversity. In , he completed his Ph.D. in agricultural economics at the niversity of Illinois at rbanaChampaign. Justin Sell • Director of Athletics Justin Sell has moved Jackrabbit Athletics forward in a number of areas of its Division I pursuits since being introduced as the th director of athletics at South Dakota State niversity on May , . At South Dakota State, Sell oversees the Jackrabbits sport Division I varsity athletics program. Eighteen SDS teams compete in he Summit League, while football competes in the Missouri alley Football Conference of the Football Champi onship Subdivision, and wrestling is a member of the Western Wrestling Conference. Womens euestrian competes under the National Collegiate Euestrian Association banner. During his first three years, the Jacks displayed success across the board, winning both the Summit League Commissioners Cup the leagues allsports championship and the Summit League Sportsmanship Award during the school year. Individually, SDS has claimed two Summit League regular season titles in mens cross country , and womens soccer , , as well as regular season league titles in and womens . In addition, the womens basketball team won three Summit League postseason tournament titles from , the mens basketball team claimed a tournament title in , and the Jackrabbit football team reached the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs for the first time in . Sell also has implemented aggressive marketing and fundraising initiatives which resulted in record average attendance for football during the season, as well as the highest number of donors and dollars donated to the Jackrabbit Club. icket sales totaled more than million for the first time during the academic year. In the classroom, Jackrabbit studentathletes have excelled, posting a cumulative . gradepoint average during the academic year. Fifteen of the Jackrabbits varsity teams included in the report cross country and track and field are combined into one team each for men and women compiled team GPAs of . or higher. Individually, of Jackrabbit studentathletes percent posted a GPA of . or higher during the spring semester. Of that group, recorded a GPA of . or higher and had a perfect . GPA during the spring term. A graduate of Bowling Green State niversity Ohio who later earned a M.S degree at he Ohio State niversity, Sell previoulsy served as senior associate athletic director at the niversity of Northern Iowa. His primary duties at NI included sport management, oversight of the athletic business office, facilities, game management, summer camps and human resources, while also assisting in fundraising and corporate sponsorships. In his previous roles as an assistant and associate athletic director at NI, Sell managed facility operations and the planning of capital projects, including the million McLeod Center and the million Human Performance Center. 4 Swimming & Diving • SDSU Administration • Rob Peterson • Senior Associate Athletic Director/Sport Supervisor Rob Peterson joined South Dakota State niversity Athletics in April as assistant athletic director for internal operations. Now the Jackrabbits senior associate athletic director for internal affairs, Peterson focuses on the daytoday op erations of the department, including supervising the areas of facility maintenance, game management, euipment room, athletic training and strength and conditioning. Peterson also serves as sports supervisor for football, cross countrytrack and field, euestrian, baseball and swimming and diving. Before joining the Jackrabbit staff, Peterson served as the coordinator of athletic facilities, events and projects for Fresno State niversity from . here, Peterson supervised seven athletic venues and the game operations for sports. Prior to his time at Fresno State, Peterson served as assistant director of recreation, facilities and events at Northern Michigan niversity from . his position provided him the opportunity to supervise events and operations for the Superior Dome on the campus of NM. his facility also houses the nited States Olympic Education Center. Peterson started his career at Northern Michigan as the director of sport clubs from . Petersons collegiate education includes completion of an HAC certificate program at Northern Michigan in , a bachelor of science in physical edu cation and health at NM in and a Masters of Arts degree in sports administration from Central Michigan niversity in . He also completed a collegiate marketing internship with NM athletics and a professional sports operations internship with the Green Bay Packers, both in . A Maruette, Mich., native, Peterson lives in Brookings. His primary interests include college football, baseball, and ice hockey. He also enjoys reading, especially on the topics of professional leadership and history.

Kathy Heylens • Associate Athletic Director — Compliance • Senior Woman Administrator Kathy Heylens became South Dakota States first fulltime Compliance Coordinator in and continues those duties as the associate athletic director for compliance and senior woman administrator. At SDS, Heylens manages all aspects of the athletics compliance program to ensure strict adherence with NCAA, affiliated conferences and niversity rules and regulations for amateurism, eligibility, recruiting, financial aid, awards and benefits, playing and practice seasons, and enforcement and as SWA help to create an environment where staff and studentathletes can achieve their goals. Heylens is currently serving a fouryear term on the NCAA Division I Legislative Council, which is the primary legislative body in the Division I governance structure. She also was appointed to the fourmember Legislative Council Administrative Committee, which acts on behalf of the full Legislative Council between meetings to transact routine items of business and serves on the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision Governance Committee. In addition to her daytoday duties, Heylens serves on the niversitys ndergraduate Experience Committee, Diversity Committee, Intercolle giate Athletics Board and Compliance eam. She also volunteers in the community as cochair of the Brookings Food Pantry and serves as a member of the Brookings Committee for People With Disabilities. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, spending time at the lake with her family and cheering on the Jacks.

Since 2009, every tournament game has been televised, including the men’s championship on ESPN2 and the women’s title game on ESPNU. Men’s Basketball enjoyed a stellar season on and off the court. The Summit League fi nished 2011-12 with its highest RPI ranking in history, placing 16th among Division I conferences after peaking as high as No. 11 earlier in the season.
