A rice-based bait treated with Starlicide® was broadcast for consumption by flocks of common mynas at the government rubbish tips on the two islands during investigations of potential myna management techniques. Bait was laid on St Helena during two 3-day periods in July and August 2009, and on Ascension over one 3-day period in November 2009. As a consequence of bait ingestion, dead mynas were found, especially under night roosts and also at the main drinking area on Ascension, following baiting. On St Helena early morning counts at the tip suggested that whilst the number of mynas fell after each treatment, lower numbers were not sustained; no reduction in numbers flying to the main roost used by birds using the tip as a feeding area was detected post-treatment. On Ascension, the number of mynas that fed at the tip and using a drinking site, and the numbers counted flying into night roosts from the direction of the tip, both indicated declines of about 70% (from about 360 to 109 individuals). Most dead birds were found following the first day of bait application, with few apparently dying after baiting on days 2 and 3.

    Birding in Somaliland, November 2019 By Enrico Leonardi [email protected] I visited Somaliland for work between 3rd and 15th November 2019. I spent several days in Hargeisa, shuffling between the Hotel Ambassador and the UNICEF Office located on the high plateau not far from the airport. I managed to do some birding in the garden of the hotel and spotted few additional species during the drives to/from the office. Between 6th and 11th November, I went on a field trip to Tog Wajaale, Boroma and Lughaya, stopping at several small villages and hamlets for work reasons. I managed to do some birding early in the mornings and in between meetings and project visits. Lughaya, a small town (~6-8,000 pp.) on the Aden Gulf coast, is bordered on the east and the west by two brackish water lagoons. A small military garrison is located close to the western lagoon, which makes the place far from ideal for birding, as jittery soldiers consider binoculars as suspicious equipment. However, I managed to spend about one hour birding part of the eastern lagoon and the beach separating it from the ocean, with some nice records. A large (several hundred birds) terns and gulls roost was present on the far side of the lagoon, but without a spotting scope it was impossible to investigate it thoroughly. Finally, following the advice of the always resourceful and helpful Bram Piot (merci!), I managed to organize a daily excursion to the Tuuyo plain with Abdi Jama. We left at 5:45am and with several stops along the road, we reached Tuuyo plain around 1pm; indeed a very long road.

BLUE−EARED STARLING Lamprotornis chloropterus 1 5 The Lesser Blue-eared Starling is widespread in 18˚ Africa south of the Sahara, but in southern Africa it is confined to northeastern regions. There has been a series of reports from along the Limpopo Valley and catchment in both Zimbabwe and the 22˚ Transvaal, but only one has been accepted here. An 6 authenticated sighting was made near Punda Maria 2 (2331AA) in January 1995 (Hockey et al. 1996). In northern Zimbabwe it is the commonest glossy 26˚ starling but in the drier south, the Greater Blue- eared Starling L. chalybaeus is more numerous (Irwin 1981). It is inclined to form much larger flocks than either of the other two common glossy 3 7 starlings, but combined parties may be found from 30˚ time to time. Glossy Starlings have always created identifi- cation problems in the field; the Lesser Blue-eared 4 8 Starling in particular is likely to have suffered from 34˚ misidentification. The enormous scatter in the 18˚ 22˚ 26˚ reporting rates in the model for Zone 5 is testimony 10˚ 14˚ 30˚ 34˚ to the inconsistency and lack of confidence be- devilling the recording of this species. This trip was highly successful, we located nearly 400 species of birds including many of the Upper Guinea endemics and West Africa specialties, and together with a great group of people, we enjoyed a brilliant African birding adventure. After spending a night in Accra our first morning birding was taken at the nearby Shai Hills, a conservancy that is used mainly for scientific studies into all aspects of wildlife. These woodland and grassland habitats were productive and we easily got to grips with a number of widespread species as well as a few specials that included the noisy Stone Partridge, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Senegal Parrot, Guinea Turaco, Swallow-tailed Bee-eater, Vieillot’s and Double- toothed Barbet, Gray Woodpecker, Yellow-throated Greenbul, Melodious Warbler, Snowy-crowned Robin-Chat, Blackcap Babbler, Yellow-billed Shrike, Common Gonolek, White Helmetshrike and Piapiac. Towards midday we made our way to the Volta River where our main target, the White-throated Blue Swallow showed well.

This approach erases the boundaries and hierarchical divisions between animals and visitors found at conventional zoos. By engaging animals on their own terms and in their own habitats, visitors are better able to understand the high degree of interconnectivity between themselves, the animals they are viewing, and the world around them. Children and adults perceive and engage the world in very different ways. At an elemental level, children operate at a very different scale than their adult counterparts. Unlike adults, children also tend to learn about the world and their place in it with a high degree of physicality: through play. Using immersive landscapes and a ‘children’s geography’ as points of departure, the master plan for the Children’s Precinct pursues four primary gestures of spatial engagement as means of defining a new conceptual framework for the Zoo: Under, Between, On, and Above. These abstract experiential types speak to a wide range of possible means of bodily relation to a given landscape and simultaneously sponsor play as a primary mechanism for engaging that landscape. Building on the master plan for the Edmonton Valley Zoo Children’s precinct, this project develops one aspect of that proposal - the ‘Above Zone’ - as a discrete immersive experience. European Starling, Sturnus vulgaris Birds that are aracted to BC orchards and vineyards include flickers, robins, and blackbirds but the most numerous and problemac species is the European Starling which was introduced to North America over one hundred years ago, and has become a major agricultural pest. European Starlings range from Alaska to northern Mexico with an American populaon of over 200 million birds. Starlings have successfully adapted to rural and urban habitats where they find nest cavies in man-made structures. They aggressively compete with nave bird species for nest spaces in tree holes and natural cavies and are a factor in the decline of some nave bird species. European Starling summer Starlings have glossy black plumage that shines with a green-purple iridescence in the spring. In summer, new brown plumage has gold flecks and white spots. Winter birds are brownish-black with fine light spots. Sounds include whistles, liquid warbles, trills and imitaons of other birds and animals. Varied diet of insects, grubs, fruit and grain. Forage in small groups on lawns and fields with short vegetaon. Large flocks forage in fields and farms in late summer through winter.
