An 18ct gold mounted riding crop the antler handle above scroll chased ferrule, with monogrammed shield cartouche and bound shaft, Birmingham 1886, 65cm long. £150-£200. 45. A Collection of Eighty various Hunt buttons including Eglinton Hunt and others, later mounted on card. £100-£150. 46. Two George III copper coaching horns, both engraved with ‘G.R’ cypher and ‘1798 Lewes Mail’ and ‘1801 London - Stamford’ respectively, 123cm long. £200-£300. * The postal service in Britain began in 1635 and remained (typically) unreliable for around 150 years. John Palmer, a Bristol theatre owner believed the coaches he used to transport actors and props would be far more reliable. After some opposition a trial run from Bristol to London in 1784 reduced the time from 38 to 16 hours. An impressed Chancellor of the Exchequer, William Pitt, authorised new routes and the system remained in service until the rise of railways led to its demise in the 1850’s 48.
