Understanding Anti-Semitism and Jewish Identity (MIS-)UNDERSTANDING ANTI-SEMITISM AND JEWISH IDENTITY From Bernard Lazare to Hannah Arendt by Milen Gotchev Jissov A thesis submitted to the Department of History in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada April, 2009 Copyright © Milen Gotchev Jissov, 2009 Abstract This study examines the responses of European intellectuals since the 1880s to an increasingly virulent and organized anti-Semitism in Europe, and the ways in which they sought to understand the character and origins of the hatred, and to fathom and work out the problems, terms and possibilities for Jewish identity. Focusing on the French figures Bernard Lazare and Marcel Proust from the time of the Dreyfus Affair and then on the Frankfurt School of social theory and Hannah Arendt from the period around and after the Second World War, the thesis argues that these thinkers created a common historical-psychological discourse on anti-Semitism, which attempted to confront, comprehend and explain the historically critical issues of anti-Semitism and Jewish identity. The study explores the discourse’s fundamental assumptions, insights, and arguments regarding the origins, character, and magnitude of anti-Semitism. It also analyzes its contentions concerning the contradictions, sources, and alternatives for Jewish identity. But, more, it claims that, despite their frequent perceptiveness, these figures’ interpretations of the two concerns proved limited, deficient, even deeply flawed. The thesis seeks to show that its intellectuals’ attempt to understand the twin issues was hence a failure to grasp and interpret them adequately, and to resolve them. It contends further that what impaired the authors’ engagements with anti-Semitism and Jewish selfhood were ideas that were fundamental to their thinking. These intellectual factors, moreover, connected the figures solidly to important historical contexts that they inhabited, thereby implicating the significant settings in the epistemological errors and defeats. These momentous ideas thus operated as both contextualizing and destructive ii forces—linking the intellectuals to their home contexts and transforming their understanding of their historic problematic into a misunderstanding. iii Acknowledgments Many individuals provided help towards the completion of this project. Located in the eastern … district of Weissensee, it is also one of Europe’s largest Jewish cemeteries with 115,000 graves and elaborate tombs….” Had it appeared in a European newspaper in the 1930s, such an account would have been unsurprising. As it happens, it does not come from the bygone age of the mass-circulation paper and the radio. It appeared on the Anti-Defamation League’s website. The date of the incident is … April 28, 2008!1 And this is not the only hateful offense the site reports. Berlin was also disgraced five years before, on July 8, 2003: “A Jewish memorial … was vandalized. The vandals apparently threw small paving stones, gouging the surface of a memorial dedicated to the former Levetzowstrasse synagogue, which was used by the Nazis as detention center to deport Jews.”2 Nor does Germany stand alone as a scene of ignominy. Firmly on the list is also France. Not one, but two, incidents occurred in a major urban center on January 20, 2004. First: “[a] parked minibus used to transport children to a Jewish 1 school in the eastern French city of Strasbourg was burned.” Second: “[p]olice reported that a group of assailants hurled stones at the door of a Strasbourg synagogue.”3 Students of history and the politically conscious know that outbursts of anti- Semitism do occur. But the reports of them somehow always surprise us. The news never sounds quite believable. One asks every time how such outrages could be possible now, in the age of cyberspace, in the twenty-first century. And one is always perplexed with how they are possible after—and so many years after—the Holocaust. But even less credible than usual is the following account. “This past weekend, described by one Jewish leader as ‘a weekend of hate’ aimed at the Jewish community, was capped by the actions of unknown vandals who knocked over 22 gravestones in Bathurst Lawn Memorial Park….” Earlier the same weekend, swastikas were painted on the walls and seven stained glass windows were broken at the Pride of Israel synagogue on Lissom Crescent. Two windows were broken at the Joseph and Faye Tanenbaum Educational Centre on Patricia Avenue. And seven swastikas and profanities were painted on United Jewish Appeal signs and a swastika on a clothing donation box at the B’nai Torah Community Centre….4 What is shocking about this description is that these anti-Semitic incidents occurred, in March 2004, in tolerant Canada. They were, in fact, part of a larger outburst that included the firebombing of the United Talmud Torah elementary school in Montreal, in April 2004.5 To be sure, the incidents were unrelated to each other, and were not the result of an organized anti-Semitic campaign.6 But they do show, perhaps even better than the examples from Germany and France, that anti-Semitism is still very much alive, that it is an all too active abscess of political realities all over the globe. How this is, indeed, true was revealed in a journalistic comment on the firebombing of the Jewish school in Montreal.

What personal risks do these journalists take from the burden of speaking their truths? Also, as the period progresses and the 20th century truly takes hold, are the antisemitic beliefs held by the French remnants of the Dreyfus Affair, or are they influenced by current ideas held in Nazi Germany? 2 Introduction: Modern French history is ripe with triumph and exhilaration, but also stress, disruptions, and mistakes.

    THE HISTORICAL ORIGINS OF ANTISEMITISM …Let me give you my honest advice. First, their synagogues or churches should be set on fire, and whatever does not burn up should be covered or spread over so that no one may ever be able to see a cinder of it. And this ought to be done for the honor of God and Christianity… (Martin Luther, 1543) When Wilhelm Marr, a 19th Century German journalist, coined the term antisemitism, he was giving a new expression to a very old hatred. Antisemitism, the hatred of Jews and Judaism, has roots of ancient origin, pre-dating the Christian era and evolving throughout the Middle Ages into the modern era. Throughout their history, Jews have been the victims of a persistent pattern of persecution, culminating finally in the 20th Century in mass murder. The term denoting hatred of the Jews – antisemitism – is spelled here and hereafter unhyphenated and in the lower case. This spelling is more historically and etymologically correct since “Semitic” refers not to a race of people, as Marr and other racists of his time wrongly believed, but to a group of languages which includes Arabic as well as Hebrew. Hence, the oft-used spelling “anti-Semitism” means, literally, a prejudice against Semitic-speaking people, not the hatred of people adhering to the Jewish religion and culture. ANTISEMITISM DURING THE PRE-CHRISTIAN ERA Expressions of anti-Jewish prejudice appeared as early as the 4th Century B.C.E. in Greece and Egypt, whose people drew stark distinction between themselves and others, whom they regarded as “strangers,” “foreigners,” or “barbarians.” Jewish religious practice, based as it was on an uncompromising monotheism and strict adherence to their religious laws and social customs, only heightened endemic suspicions and excited hostility in societies already prone to ethnocentric excess.

Some say, ‘No good deed goes unpunished.’ John of Capistrano was a well-educated man who advanced quickly in early life. At the age of 26, he was the local governor of Perugia in Italy. In a battle against a powerful enemy, he tried to broker a peace. Instead, he wound up as a prisoner of war. Some say, ‘When one door closes, another opens.’ In prison, John of Capistrano had a vision that gave him a focus and purpose to go and proclaim the Kingdom of God. St. Francis of Assisi came to him in a dream and he experienced a profound conversion. From that point forward he resolved to embrace poverty, chastity, and obedience as a Franciscan. Eventually released from prison, he followed through on his mystical experience and joined the Franciscans of Perugia. He studied diligently and applied himself to this new prayerful way of life. Four years later he was ordained a Franciscan priest.i ii Saint Francis said, ‘Peach the Gospel at all times, if necessary, use words.’ John of Capistrano was a powerful preacher.

  • Antisemitism
    Antisemitism Hatred of Jews as a people or of "the Jew" as a concept. The term “antisemitism” was first coined in the late 1870s, subsequently it is used with reference to all types of Jew-hatred - both historical and contemporary. The word itself comes from the idea that Hebrew belongs to the Semitic language family, and thus Jews must be "Semites." Many other languages also belong to the Semitic language family, such as Arabic and Amharic, and therefore other cultures could also be called "Semites." However, there is no such thing as "Semitism" and no other groups have ever been included in the hatred and prejudice denoted by antisemitism. The word itself is a good example of how, during the late nineteenth century, Jew-haters pretended that their hatred had its basis in scholarly and scientific ideas. Jew-hatred is not a modern phenomenon—it may be traced back to ancient times. Traditional antisemitism is based on religious discrimination against Jews by Christians. Christian doctrine was ingrained with the idea that Jews were responsible for the death of Jesus, and thus deserved to be punished (this is known as the Deicide, or Killing of God, Myth). Another concept that provoked hatred of Jews amongst Christians was the Supercession Myth, claiming that Christianity had replaced Judaism, due to the Jewish People’s failure in their role as the Chosen People of God—and thus deserving punishment, specifically by the Christian world. Over the centuries various stereotypes about Jews developed. Individual Jews were not judged based on their personal achievements or merits, but rather were seen on the whole as greedy, devilish, standoffish, lazy, money-grubbing, and over-sexed.

Felea” Faculty of Orthodox Theology, Arad, Romania E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In the enthusiastic atmosphere of the initialling, at Ferrara-Florence (1438-1439), of the union between the Western and the Eastern Church, in Banat and in south- west Transylvania appeared the papal inquisitor John of Capistrano, emblematic personality of the Roman missionary in the middle of the XVth century. The purpose of his arrival was that of consolidating the union between the two Churches and through this, of strengthening the common anti-Ottoman front, in the eve of the great battle of Belgrade (1456), battle in which, as a matter of fact, he gave his life, together with his main collaborator, the Romanian voivode John Hunyadi.
