I hold a first class honours degree with double distinction in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies from the University of Newcastle, UK.

I sit on the committee of TEG (Touring Exhibitions Group) in the UK, and I am a general member of the UK Registrars Group (UKRG).

I was appointed by National Museums Scotland in 2015 to develop and manage a new touring exhibitions programme for the museum. As well as driving a new culture for touring within the organisation, I am also solely responsible for creating and seeking partnerships with international museums, feasibility and business cases for touring exhibitions as well as project delivery. Key achievements include instigating the museums first international income generating touring turn-key exhibition ‘Monkeys! A Primate Story’, developing a partnership with an exhibitions agency, Nomad Exhibitions, to facilitate our touring ambitions and programming a four year national touring programme to local Scottish museums.

Prior to this I was Exhibitions Manager at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London for three years. I managed touring exhibitions to a wide variety of museum and heritage sites around the world, including United Arab Emirates, Australia and Europe, sharing museum collections and building on the V&A’s cultural diplomatic relations.

Before specialising in touring exhibitions I was Collections Information Registrar at the National Galleries of Scotland for four years.

Statement of Motivation: (Please include your motivations for becoming a board member and what general contributions you can make to the growth and development of the ICEE)

The ICEE has been invaluable for me and my career. I have been responsible for a new touring exhibitions programme at National Museums Scotland since 2015, and the committee and annual conference has provided me with a great support network as well as international contacts and new friends. It is the most relevant conference that I attend annually and I would like to be a part of its future growth.

I am a regular attendee, supporter and participant of the annual conference. I have been fortunate to attend every one since 2015. I hope that my enthusiasm for ICEE to date demonstrates my willingness to be an active and motivated member of the committee. I regularly submit papers and I use social media to promote and support ICEE.

A growing number of museums in the UK are creating touring exhibition jobs or departments. I frequently recommend ICEE to colleagues who, like me, are now responsible for setting up a touring programme. As a result, some have been able to attend and take part in ICEE. As a member of the committee I would continue to promote the ICEE as I do now.

Within my role at NMS I create and deliver a variety of touring exhibition models. This includes funded national partnership touring exhibitions, income generating ‘turn-key’ touring exhibitions in partnership with a touring agency, and ‘curated collections’ exhibitions to increase our brand and reputation internationally. I believe that my experience of managing a variety touring models equips me with a solid understanding of the touring sector. I can use this knowledge and expertise to develop themes and current topics to be discussed via the conference or professional development (such as the webinar series).

I am fortunate that my employer is supportive of my attendance at international conferences. As a member of ICEE I could also utilise some time at other conferences, such as AAM, to participate and facilitate ICEE sessions to spread the word and increase participation.

I am a very organised individual and I would be particularly interested in planning and managing the ICEE Annual Conference and all that that entails. I would also be happy to contribute to social media content development, ICEE elections and management of the membership database.

Contribution to ICEE Strategic Goals: (Please describe how your participation in the ICEE board would help the Committee to advance in the implementation of the ICEE Strategic Goals). For more information, please see the Strategic Goals document.

I am a committee member of the UK wide Touring Exhibitions Group (TEG), this is a platform I could utilise to garner more support/membership/participation in the ICEE conference as per strategic goals 1,2 and 3 (Consolidate ICEE as a leading platform and enhance the annual conference. Strengthen current partnerships).

I could contribute my contacts with touring agencies and UK transport agents I work with to provide sponsorship support to the ICEE as per strategic goal 3 (Foster strategic partnerships).

I took part in the ICEE webinar series to date and found them to be an excellent resource for professional development. I would like to see more of them and I would contribute ideas and suggest speakers as per strategic goal 4 (Build leadership capacity).

I actively promote ICEE, ICOM US and others on Twitter. I would like to increase my use of this platform and would be enthusiastic to assist the ICEE with their social media presence as per strategic goal 5 (Improve ICEE communications).

I was President of the Board of Directors of the Council of Heritage Organizations of Ottawa (CHOO) for 2 terms (4yrs) and am currently sitting as Past-President. Statement of Motivation: (Please include your motivations for becoming a board member and what general contributions you can make to the growth and development of the ICEE)

I believe in sharing expertise and knowledge. Why should institutions try to reinvent the wheel every time they develop a new exhibition or product? There is a wealth of information and knowledge within the ICEE community and I strongly believe in ICEE’s mission to provide a global forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences.

The timing of this election is excellent as ICEE is moving into a new strategic planning cycle. I believe with my experience in strategic and corporate planning, I can help develop the new strategic goals and activities, to continue to solidify ICEE as an important part of the ICOM community.

I have 12 combined years of experience in exhibition development and travelling exhibition program development. I understand the challenges of both, but also the benefits that travelling exhibitions bring to the developing/creating organization as well as those for the host venues.

I would like to see ICEE lead discussions around the issues of transportation, as prices for shipping are dramatically increasing. How will new legislations on the global shipping industry affect travelling exhibition exchange? How will we work towards reducing our carbon footprint? How can the ICEE community engage with policy makers and shipping companies to come up with sustainable solutions? I believe these discussions will be essential for ICEE to remain a relevant platform for global exhibition exchange.

As a representative of the science museum/science centre sector, I bring forward the perspective, experience and challenges of an important player in international travelling exhibition exchange community.

Contribution to ICEE Strategic Goals: (Please describe how your participation in the ICEE board would help the Committee to advance in the implementation of the ICEE Strategic Goals). For more information, please see the Strategic Goals document.

As ICEE moves into a new strategic planning period, I believe my experience in strategic planning will be of excellent value. I have worked on developing new strategic plans for both a large national museum corporation as well as a small local heritage non-for-profit organization. I have a strong understanding of what makes solid strategic goals, good key performance indicators and establishing measures for success.

I have extensive experience with planning annual conferences at the regional, national and international scale. This will contribute to the strategic goal to enhance the ICEE Annual Conference.

As an active member of a number of national and international associations – in addition to ICEE (CMA, CASC, ASTC, AAM, Ecsite, ICOM-CIMUSET, ICOM-Canada) I understand the importance of building relationships with members from the international community and across both museums and science centres. This experience and network will contribute well to the strategic goal of maintaining ICEE as a leader on the international exhibition exchange platform.

I have lead (and am currently leading) international exhibition development projects, and have a good understanding of the strategic goal of fostering strategic partnerships and collaborations. I am an excellent communicator and thrive when working with diverse groups of people. I also have significant experience facilitating groups and helping teams come to concencus. Name: ICOM Member Number: ICOM Member Since: (Year) Francesca Polo 73881 2014

Title and Work Affiliation (Institution): Address: COO Vastari Group Ltd 12-18 Hoxton Street, N1 6NG, London UK

ICOM National Committees Affiliation: Previous Involvement with other ICOM Groups: (National and/or International Committees, Regional ICOM UK Alliances, Standing Committees, among others) ICEE

Number of Years as a Member of ICEE: (Please include and detail attendance and or active participation at recent ICEE conferences) Vastari has been a member of ICEE since 2014 and has attended all conferences since then, as well as sponsoring the 2014 edition.

Professional Profile: (Please indicate a brief outline of education, professional experience, and involvement with national/regional/state museum associations)

Francesca holds a BA in Philosophy of art from the University of Milan, a Post Graduate Diploma and a Masters in Art History from the Courtauld Institute in London.

She has worked as a researcher at Christie’s and the British Museum and founded Vastari in 2012.

At Vastari Francesca has built a global online network of over 9,000 institutions interested in exhibition collaborations and runs a marketplace with over 400 touring shows.

Francesca regularly lectures post-graduate students on the topic of digital resources for museums and the private sector, and runs masterclasses and workshops on exhibition collaborations for museum professionals and art foundations.

Francesca has been an active member of ICEE, ICOM UK and the American Alliance of museums since 2014 and is training as a coach to enhance the leadership of museum professionals within the Vastari network.

Statement of Motivation: (Please include your motivations for becoming a board member and what general contributions you can make to the growth and development of the ICEE) Vastari aims at bringing transparency, sharing knowledge and helping define industry standards to facilitate exhibition collaborations across disciplines on a global scale.

The synergies and complementarity between Vastari’s and ICEE’s missions make this opportunity to join the board particularly exciting.

Through Vastari’s online platform, I have access to data from thousands of institutions of different in sizes, thematic focus, and geolocation ranging from North America and Europe to emerging markets.

This gives me unique statistically significant insights and a global picture of how museums operate, on their challenges and needs when it comes to exhibition collaborations. In this light, I believe I could offer a valuable perspective on how to make ICEE a more relevant platform for global exhibition exchange.

Furthermore, as a young professional and member of the LGBT community I could help ICEE be more inclusive and cater to a wider range of museum professionals.

Contribution to ICEE Strategic Goals: (Please describe how your participation in the ICEE board would help the Committee to advance in the implementation of the ICEE Strategic Goals). For more information, please see the Strategic Goals document.

Below I have outlined how my skills and experience in communication and operations can contribute to ICEE’s strategic goals:

Consolidate the ICEE as a leading international exhibition exchange platform

In six years Vastari has become a trusted entity within the touring exhibition community with a global footprint and has attracted over 9000 institutions worldwide.

This has been achieved through active involvement in conferences, workshops, trade shows and by sharing meaningful content, including industry reports, through various channels: emails, blog, podcast, social media and webinars.

The wealth of experience and marketing strategies developed could easily be transferred and applied to help ICEE grow its membership base, reaching a wider community of museum professionals with a proven interest in exhibition exchanges and consolidating its role as a leading international platform.

Enhance the ICEE Annual Conference experience as a multicultural and multidisciplinary platform for discussion of relevant topics related to exhibition exchange.

As part of my role at Vastari I have also been actively involved in organising workshops, seminars and training opportunities for museum professionals both independently and in partnership with various organisations including ICOM UK and the Art Fund. Vastari’s extensive network has been invaluable in creating engaging events with diverse and international panels of expert museum professionals. These events have consistently received positive feedback and have seen growth in the number of attendees over the years.

I believe my network and experience in operations would be an asset in making the ICEE conference an inclusive platform with a global perspective on relevant issues.

Build leadership capacity by providing professional and institutional development programs for ICEE members.

Last summer I have spearheaded a research project to produce an in depth analysis of museums’ best practices and trends in exhibition collaborations, which resulted in the release of the Vastari Reports in October 2018. These reports have been welcomed by both museum professionals as well as sector specific press including Artnet, The Art Newpaper, and Museums Journal.

The quantitative analysis included in the reports has already provided invaluable material for fruitful conversations amongst museum professionals for Vastari and could be used as a basis for further research projects to be developed within ICEE to cater more specifically to their members. Maintain effective communication channels and develop new tools to improve internal communications with ICEE members.

I have personally coordinated Vastari’s communication strategy both internally and externally.

Concerning external communication, I have been responsible for Vastari's outreach efforts through digital marketing including production of copy, images, videos, audience segmentation, social media management and implementation of various marketing software (Mailchimp, Drip, Intercom, Smartlook).

Creating solid internal systems, processes and communication channels has also been a large part of my role, and it was crucial in being able to maintain an effective communication with Vastari’s community and members.

Identifying the best communication tools and implementing the use of a CRM have been a significant learning experience and I am hoping that sharing my insights could lead to a quicker route to successful communication both within the board as well as with ICEE current and potential members.

Title and Work Affiliation (Institution): Address: Exhibition Project Manager, Museum Centre Alaverstaanraitti 5 Vapriikki, , 33100 TAMPERE, FINLAND

ICOM National Committees Affiliation: Previous Involvement with other ICOM Groups: (National and/or International Committees, Regional ICOM Finland Alliances, Standing Committees, among others)

Number of Years as a Member of ICEE: Please include and detail attendance and or active participation at recent ICEE conferences)

8 years. I’ve been a member of the ICEE since June 2012, when it became my (most enjoyable) job to head the international relations and to attend the ICEE conferences for Museum Centre Vapriikki. Since then, I have attended all annual conferences: Toronto 2012, Rio de Janeiro 2013, Helsinki/Tampere/Mänttä 2014, Cape Town 2015, Milan 2016, .and Madrid/Barcelona 2018.

Professional Profile: (Please indicate a brief outline of education, professional experience, and involvement with national/regional/state museum associations)

I hold a PhD in History. My academic field of expertise is indigenous land claims in both colonial and modern times. I have an academic mind in a very practical head, so although my heart beats for science, I’ve found my true calling in popularizing history and educating people about their fascinating pasts, i.e. working as a museum professional. Having begun as a research assistant and assisting researcher in Vapriikki from 1996 to 2002, I worked for the and Victoria University of Wellington for 7 years. In 2009 I returned to Vapriikki, and since then have worked as a project manager. I specialize in large scale international exhibitions. My work at Vapriikki includes not only managing, but very often also curating exhibitions and editing or authoring books connected to them. The best part of my job, however, is to head Vapriikki’s international relations. I maintain networks and source both chances for cooperation and available exhibitions. Since this year, I’ve also been a member of the City of Tampere international coordinator’s team, a very high-profile team of professionals from all fields of the city administration aiming to best promote the city.

I’m an active member of the Finnish ICOM, Finnish museum’s Association, and in my free time, and I’m also a board member in the local historical association Pispalan Moreeni that protects the national heritage site of .

Statement of Motivation: (Please include your motivations for becoming a board member and what general contributions you can make to the growth and development of the ICEE)

The international connections offered by an active participation in the ICEE are, of course, immensely valuable to my museum. On a personal level, it is a pleasure and privilege for me to be part of that network. I’ve been an active member of the ICEE for a number of years now, and I feel now it would be time to give even more – to work hard as a board member for the benefit of the members and the larger international community.

In Vapriikki, I’m known for my enthusiasm for organization and development, for making things at work better for all of us, and of course, planning, sourcing and building even better exhibitions. I’m very internationally oriented and thrive on meeting and collaborating colleagues in different museums around the world. I’d be more than happy to offer my dedication and diligence for the benefit of the ICEE board.

I was delighted to help organize and co-host the 2014 ICEE conference in Finland. As a board member of the ICEE, I would work hard towards organizing even better conferences, but also towards offering more support for members in between conferences, as well as new ways of connecting and communicating outside conferences. I recognize that a lot of great work has already been done on these issues in the recent years, and ICEE is already in a very good shape.

Contribution to ICEE Strategic Goals: (Please describe how your participation in the ICEE board would help the Committee to advance in the implementation of the ICEE Strategic Goals). For more information, please see the Strategic Goals document.

The strategic goals of the ICEE are in so many ways integral to the work I do at Vapriikki that working in the ICEE board would only be an extension of that. I fully support and embrace the goals personally. Fostering strategic partnerships and collaborations, consolidating the ICEE as a leading platform for international exhibition exchange as well as maintaining and developing effective communication channels are at the core of the ICEE board’s work. I would offer my experience, Northern networks and the famous Finnish negotiating skills to the variety of superpowers in ICEE board! Making the ICEE Annual Conference even better, multidisciplinary, but also as multicultural as possible is central to me amongst these aims.

Very close to my heart is the ICEE goal of building leadership capacity by providing professional and institutional development programs for ICEE members. I see this as a great opportunity also to reach out to smaller or more economically challenged countries or museums. I keep thinking the Cape Town conference was a valuable lesson for all of us in this matter. The boost of excitement and sense of new beginnings experienced by our South African colleagues as a consequence of the conference showed us that ICEE can be very powerful in bringing change and aid to countries and museums lacking finances for international cooperation. With the right connections, all seems possible for any museum anywhere in the world. As a member of the board I would try to emphasize this side of the work of the ICEE too.

With almost twenty-year experience in the cultural sector and a Bachelor of Arts (Art History and Curatorship), I am currently Head, International and Domestic Engagement at the National Museum of Australia. I manage a rapidly growing business unit which takes the National Museum’s programs and activities to the nation and abroad. I drive the strategic direction for national and international outreach program and oversee the international and the domestic touring exhibition program, the Museum’s Memoranda of Understanding with cultural institutions nationally and internationally, and the development of the Museum’s cultural diplomacy activities taking a key role in the articulation of the Museum’s strategic position in respect to soft power and working closely with Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Through my experience in touring exhibitions, partnerships and collaborations I have worked with a vast range of international, national, regional, and remote museums and galleries as well as other partnerships from practicing artists to corporate partners. I initiate and activate partnerships to deliver programs in collaboration of mutual benefit. Most recently I have managed a tour of a major-collection based exhibition, Old Masters: Australia’s Great Bark Artists, on a multi-venue tour across mainland China and Taipei, which renowned Australian Arts journalist John McDonald recently said in the Sydney Morning Herald, ‘in what must be one of the most comprehensive Australian museum tours ever undertaken’. Through all of my work I seek to foster people-to-people links, build capacity within the sector, create opportunities for Indigenous community members and artists, and profile the remarkable history of the Australian nation.

Statement of Motivation: (Please include your motivations for becoming a board member and what general contributions you can make to the growth and development of the ICEE)

My motivation to become a board member for ICEE lies in my strong belief and passion for cross cultural exchange and international engagement, and the associated benefits both for the museum professional, the artist and community, the institution, for the nation and region and ultimately for audiences. I want to contribute to the rich culture of a global network of museum professionals created through international connections such as those fostered by ICEE. I believe the world is small and there is a huge breadth of opportunity in working together and in the diversity of the human experience. ICEE can facilitate understanding of each other’s cultural practices, audiences, challenges and achievements. It provides a two-way conversation and can reveal and create opportunities to collaborate.

I strongly believe that each nation’s story should take its place in the shared global story-telling of humanity. National stories provide opportunities for real connections, to develop relationships and strengthen engagement internationally. Cultural diplomacy initiatives, cross cultural exchange for artists and communities, identifying parallels, facing challenges and providing opportunities to engage in global discussions around the experience of First Nations peoples, of diaspora, of climate change, of the wider global storytelling of human action and experience across time, are all outcomes of an international engagement created through forums like ICEE. The network created by ICEE allows for this shared understanding to develop and ultimately to feed into forward programs for exhibitions across the world, extending the reach of collections and stories. Through working together these collections can be represented to audiences in a way that is sympathetic to the cultural framework of the country or region in which it is presented. This creates accessible and successful exhibitions as well as opportunities for cross cultural exchange and professional development. I believe the engagement is broader than touring exhibitions. The ICEE network can build on capacity building opportunities for members and facilitate staff exchange programs and internship opportunities for members to extend the reach for learning opportunities and best practice.

Contribution to ICEE Strategic Goals: (Please describe how your participation in the ICEE board would help the Committee to advance in the implementation of the ICEE Strategic Goals). For more information, please see the Strategic Goals document.

ICEE can be a sharing economy for research, production and delivery, connecting learning and making space for new perspectives. I would contribute my experience and expertise in building an international program for a national institution to this forum.

As part of the ICEE Board I would bring representation of Australia and the wider region to this global forum. As a senior leader from the National Museum of Australia, it would demonstrate commitment from a leading national cultural institution with an established international exhibition exchange program adding a particular global perspective. The experience of Australia with its distinctive history, which combines the remarkable stories of the First Peoples of the continent, together with the creation of a modern, affluent, multicultural nation in the 21st century, is a subject of interest and fascination around the world, and this cultural background would contribute to the multicultural platform and bring relevant topics, such as the experience of First Nations people to a global discussion.

I would bring the experience of forging and managing an active international program, based on strategic partnerships and collaboration, to ICEE both as a board member and a participant in the conference and other activities. I would activate my network to harness support from leaders in the cultural sector in Australia to contribute to ICEE in building capacity and offering insights. As a leader in the Australian museum community with a demonstrated commitment to enhancing Australia’s international connections, I believe I am well positioned to contribute to the ICEE Board.

ICEE BOARD MEMBER NOMINATION FORM 2019

Name: ICOM Member Number: ICOM Member Since: (Year) Marie Trouïs 130451 2017

Title and Work Affiliation (Institution): Address: Advisor, Touring projects 100, rue Laurier Street, Gatineau, QC K1A 0M8 Canadian Museum of History

ICOM National Committees Affiliation: Previous Involvement with other ICOM Groups: (National and/or International Committees, Regional Canada Alliances, Standing Committees, among others)

Number of Years as a Member of ICEE: (Please include and detail attendance and or active participation at recent ICEE conferences)

I have been an individual member of the ICOM since 2017, but my institution has been involved in ICOM and ICEE for over 15 years.

In recent years, I have actively taken part in ICEE activities, presenting an exhibition partnership case study at the 2018 ICEE Conference in Barcelona and attending ICEE panels at both 2018 and 2019 AAM Conferences. I have also been an avid listener and supporter of the ICEE’s recent webinar series, promoting them to my colleagues and professional contacts.

Professional Profile: (Please indicate a brief outline of education, professional experience, and involvement with national/regional/state museum associations) I have an M.A. in Museology and an M.B.A. This has provided me with dual areas of specialization, combining museology with business development.

I have been involved for more than a decade in museum communications and marketing in both France and Canada and have overseen the promotion of travelling exhibitions for the Canadian Museum of History and Canadian War Museum since 2013. By sending out more than 20 exhibition projects each year, both across Canada and around the world, I have helped disseminate the Museums’ collections and knowledge, while also increasing their self- generated revenues and expanding their reach.

Prior to this, as Manager of Communications for the Société des musées du Québec (SMQ) — a provincial association representing more than 300 Quebec museums and nearly 1,000 museum professionals — I was responsible for developing thematic promotional campaigns to promote SMQ museums to the public and tourism professionals, while also guiding Quebec museums towards the development of more professional marketing initiatives. In addition, I participated in the planning and organization of the association’s annual conference and planned its programming. I was also responsible for the association’s social media and website content.

Statement of Motivation: (Please include your motivations for becoming a board member and what general contributions you can make to the growth and development of the ICEE) With six years' experience in communications for a museum association, and five years as Advisor, Touring Projects, at the Canadian Museum of History (CMH), I feel I would be a good fit for a position on the ICEE board.

I have considerable knowledge of Canadian and French museum networks (Canadian Museums Association, Société des musées du Québec, Ontario Museum Association, British Columbia Museums Association, Office de Coopération et d’Information Muséales, Réunion des musées nationaux, Paris-Musées) as well as international museum networks (The European Network of Science Centres and Museums, Informal learning experience, Museum Conferences Network, the Touring Exhibitions Meeting, French-American Museum Exchange). Over the years, I have developed major exhibition partnerships, often made possible through collaborations between institutions. Meetings such as those held by the ICEE have helped generate several CMH exhibition projects, and I am convinced that it is essential to promote and encourage this type of interaction. As such, I would certainly be interested in facilitating museum partnerships by helping to organize ICEE events and conference-related logistics.

These types of gatherings also support initiative and learning within the international museum community. It is often through presentations, mentoring, information discussions, and professional intercultural exchanges that we build knowledge and help our organizations grow. These types of forums have often helped me make clear- headed decisions on behalf of my organization and in my career. It would be an honour to work on the planning of conference content, and the development and promotion of such initiatives within an inclusive framework. I have a keen interest in positioning the ICEE as a unifying voice within which professionals in our field feel comfortable — no matter the country of origin, means of funding, or size of institution.

Contribution to ICEE Strategic Goals: (Please describe how your participation in the ICEE board would help the Committee to advance in the implementation of the ICEE Strategic Goals). For more information, please see the Strategic Goals document.

My former duties as Manager of Communications with the Société des musées du Québec made me comfortable with all tasks related to member relations, membership development, and the dissemination of information. It would thus be easy for me to: - Develop surveys to assess member expectations - Share content across various platforms - Develop promotional tools - Make presentations to museum professionals and museology students to promote the organization - Enhance promotional tools and the sharing of content - Manage and update the database

During my time at the SMQ, I took part in the planning of content and in the organization of more than five annual conferences, bringing together 400 international participants and guests each year. As such, I could also: - Develop conference programming - Call upon experts with the field for professional development activities - Organize networking events - Develop partnerships with affiliated organizations to enhance the organization’s visibility
