Terms and Conditions for photographers

1. The title of the National Trust’s photography competition 2016 is “Calke on Camera”. The theme is ‘Calke – Captured’ and entries of any moment or subject captured at Calke will be accepted but must be taken on the Calke Estate. Photographs of the park and garden will be accepted as well as photographs of the house and its associated buildings. Entrants can submit photos that have been taken at National Trust Calke Abbey in the past and do not have to have been taken in 2016.

2. Entrants can submit two photos in total as prints, in colour or black and white. Electronic images cannot be accepted. Images must be A4 in size (297mm x 210mm) with no border.

3. Entrants must mark each photo on the reserve with the title of their image and their name, address, contact telephone (both daytime and evening) and email address.

4. Entries should be sent by post to: Calke Abbey Photographic Competition, Calke Abbey, , , DE73 7LE. Alternatively entrants can submit their photographs in person in an envelope to the Ticket Office at Calke Abbey during Ticket Office opening hours (10am–4.30pm). We regret that we are unable to accept submissions by email or other electronic means.

5. There will be 2 entry categories: one for under 16’s and one for 16 and over (with one winner in each category). The prize will be the same for each category. The prize will be a voucher for a canvas print ranging from a size of your choice from 8”x 8” to 30” x 30” of an image of your choice from the Jessops shop in Nottingham (12/14 Clumber Street, Nottingham, NG1 3GA). The prizes are as stated and cannot be deferred or transferred. There will be no cash alternatives.

6. The competition is open to UK residents only (including residents of the Channel Islands and Isle of Man). Employees of National Trust as well as their immediate families are not eligible to enter. Entrants under the age of 16 years need to have parent or guardian consent to enter.

7. Entrants must not be professional photographers. For the purposes of this competition, a professional photographer will be considered to be someone who makes more than half their annual income from the sale of their photographs.

8. National Trust Calke Abbey is aware that digital photography does allow for some image enhancement. You can enter images that have had spots, scratches or other blemishes removed. You can have worked on the colour or enhance the image for the sake of the composition. You can also crop the image to improve composition. We will not accept composite images – entries that stitch two or more separate photographs together to make one image, or entries that superimpose elements photographed separately onto an image. We want you to stay faithful to the spirit of the competition, and never deceive the viewer or misrepresent the aspect of the estate being portrayed. National Trust Calke Abbey and the judges reserve the right to exclude any image they believe may have been excessively treated to alter its authenticity.

9. The competition closes at 5pm on Saturday 23 July 2016. Entries received after this date will not be considered. Entries will not be returned so please remember to keep a copy.

11. The photographs will be judged through the following process:

12. Stage One

12.1 A judging panel comprised of National Trust Calke Abbey staff and photography volunteers and local photographic societies will review all entries and select 23 of the best entries judged on the above criteria.

13. Stage Two

13.1 These 23 photos will be displayed in the Riding School at National Trust Calke Abbey between Saturday 6 August and Sunday 21 August 2016, (open for viewing between 11am and 4pm, normal park admission applies). 13.2 The judging panel will choose a winner from each of the two categories (under 16’s and over 16’s) and the winners will be announced on Saturday 6 August 2016. The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. 13.3 Each of the winning entrants will be contacted by phone or email by a member of staff at National Trust Calke Abbey by Thursday 4 August. If after reasonable attempts a winning entrant cannot be contacted, National Trust Calke Abbey reserves the right to select another winner from the shortlisted entries.

14. All entries must be the original work of the entrant, that they own the copyright and that they do not infringe the copyright or other rights of any other party or any laws. We are looking for original photographs, so entries must not have won any competition prize previously.

15. It is the responsibility of each entrant to ensure that any photographs they submit have been taken with the permission of any people featured or their parents/guardians if children under 16 are featured. All individuals featured should have been advised of the purposes of the submission of their photograph and that their photograph may be published by the National Trust. Where an individual is featured, the photographer must seek written consent, and present this to the National Trust if requested. 16. Entrants will retain copyright and moral rights in the photographs that they submit. By entering the competition all entrants: 16.1 Grant the National Trust the non-exclusive right to use the photographs to promote the competition they were submitted for, including exhibiting their photographs in the Riding School Calke Abbey and reproducing the photographs on National Trust’s digital channels (website, Facebook and Twitter – with credit) or for similar future competitions within a five year period of the winners of the competition being announced. 16.2 Agree that the use referred to at clause 16.1 above may include publishing, displaying or otherwise reproducing the photographs (whether on the internet, in the National Trust Magazine, in exhibitions or otherwise) provided such use is for the purposes of promoting the competition or similar future competitions only; and 16.3 Agree that the National Trust may contact them using the contact details they provided to discuss potential use of their photographs beyond the promotion of the competition. Such discussion and negotiation will be independent from the competition and will not affect entrants’ chances of winning.

17. The National Trust will ensure that the photographer will always be credited whenever his or her images is used or published by the National Trust.

18. Winners may be required to take part in publicity and their name and county may be published on the National Trust website and other National Trust publications.

19. By entering, entrants will be deemed to have agreed to be bound by these rules and National Trust Calke Abbey reserves the right to exclude any entry from the competition at any time and in its absolute discretion if it has reason to believe that an entrant has breached these rules.

20. Events may occur that render the competition itself or the awarding of the prizes impossible due to reasons beyond the control of the National Trust and accordingly the National Trust may at its absolute discretion cancel, vary or amend the promotion and the entrant agrees that no liability shall attach to the promoter as a result thereof.
