The Character of Galahad Is an Attempt, Across the Development of the Grail Legend, to Rationalize the Genealogy of the Central Quester Quest of the Holy Grail: Genealogies Parlan, the Maimed King Pelles, the Rich Fisher King (daughter) + Lancelot Galahad The character of Galahad is an attempt, across the development of the Grail legend, to rationalize the genealogy of the central quester. Galahad is the thirteenth-century replacement for Chrétien de Troyes's Perceval, the hero of Li Contes del Graal (The Story of the Grail, c. 1191). Chrétien's romance does not have a conclusion, so it was left to a complex series of "Continuators" to bring the Grail quest of a close. The naïve Perceval then becomes the third of the successful Grail questers. Chrétien's "grail" is not a Christian symbol or artifact, although the grail ceremony has Eucharistic resonances; Chrétien's romance also contains suggestions of the Waste Land motif that links the health of the king to the fertility of the land. Robert de Boron wrote the first specifically "christian" grail narrative; the Continuations added other narrative details. In the thirteenth century, the whole Arthurian legend was codified in a five-part cycle known as the "Vulgate Cycle"; these are the texts to which Thomas Malory refers when he speaks of his "frensshe bookes." The Vulgate Cycle "clarified" the genealogy by making Galahad the illegitimate son, and eventual spiritual supplanter of his father, Lancelot. This development also permits the author of the Vulgate Queste to articulate his critique of medieval romantic (i.e., "courtly") love. Chrétien's romances are available in translations by D. D. R. Owen (Everyman) and David Staines (Indiana). The Quest of the Holy Grail has been translated by Pauline Matarasso (Penguin). .

Also plays GUARD 1 and BROTHER MAYNARD, a long-winded monk. A good mover. SIR LANCELOT (Tenor/Baritone, 30s-40s) – A Knight of the Round Table. He is fearless to a bloody fault but through a twist of fate discovers his "softer side." This actor MUST be great with character voices and accents, as he also plays THE FRENCH TAUNTER, an arrogant, condescending, over-the-top Frenchman; the KNIGHT OF NI, an absurd, cartoonish leader of a peculiar group of Knights; and TIM THE ENCHANTER, a ghostly being with a Scottish accent.

The different meanings of these concepts were not always easily compatible, causing tensions within the literature that attempted to portray them. The Arthurian world became a place that these concepts, and the issues that could arise when attempting to act upon them, could be explored. In this dissertation, I explore these concepts specifically through the characters of Lancelot, Galahad, and Gawain. Representative of earthly chivalry and heavenly chivalry, respectively, Lancelot and Galahad are juxtaposed in the ways in which they perform masculinity and chivalry within the Arthurian world. Chrétien introduces Lancelot to the Arthurian narrative, creating the illicit relationship between him and Guinevere which tests both his masculinity and chivalry. The Lancelot- Grail Cycle takes Lancelot’s story and expands upon it, securely situating Lancelot as the best secular knight. This Cycle also introduces Galahad as the best sacred knight, acting as redeemer for his father. Gawain, in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, exemplifies both the earthly and heavenly aspects of chivalry, showing the fraught relationship between the two, resulting in the emasculating of Gawain.

Today's woman is not a damsel in distress, but rather stands on equal ground with her masculine counterpart. She has no need to acknowledge that there was ever a time when men lived and died for the sake of honor. However, around 1066 a.d. to 1485 a.d., that was exactly what European knights, and those around the world, did (Achlin). Of these brave soldiers, the most famous were the Knights of the Round Table, subjects of Camelot and King Arthur. Perhaps the most acclaimed knights are dubbed Sir Lancelot and Sir Gawain. Lancelot is still known as the greatest of all knights, the perfect knight, but based on Gawain's actions in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by the Pearl Poet and those of Lancelot in The Once and Future King by T.H. White, I've come to the conclusion that Gawain is a greater model of chivalry than Lancelot. Following the code of chivalry, Gawain is faithful to God, his King, and he is respectful to women. Lancelot is very talented, but he does not feel the need to follow the laws of knighthood, and ends up disregarding King Arthur, Queen Guinevere and even God because of it. Modern filmmakers have added to this legacy. Though audiences have enjoyed various contemporary film adaptations of these medieval romances, several essential elements are lost while translating the works to screen. This paper identifies a central motif in each work—King Arthur’s Round Table and Isolt’s love potion— that shapes the subsequent love triangle, and by extension, the representation and motivation of honor. He prefers to find peaceful solutions to problems rather than fighting. Arthur is able to appreciate the viewpoints of other people and this helps him to find other solutions. Merlin – Merlin is a legendary wizard of considerable intelligence and power. Merlin wants the best for the land of Britain but does not want to rule, knowing that a warrior is needed to unite the kingdom. Merlin was an advisor to King Uther Pendragon before advising King Arthur. Merlin was able to use magic to prove that Arthur was the king of the Britains. Later, he was able to communicate with people from another world and provide Arthur with the magical sword, Excalibur. Merlin looks like an old man with a flowing white beard. Queen Guinevere – Guinevere is the wife of King Arthur. Her name means “The White Enchantress” or “The White Ghost”; a name given to her because of her pale white skin. Although she loves King Arthur, she grows to love Sir Lancelot. This betrayal of Arthur eventually leads to quarrels and fights amongst the knights of the round table and eventually ends Camelot. Sir Lancelot – Lancelot is the bravest and most skilled Knight of the Round Table. A talented swordsman and jouster, Lancelot is also Arthur’s greatest friend. When Lancelot falls in love with Guinevere, this leads to civil war and brings about the end of King Arthur’s kingdom.
